Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Yup, I was shooting at ISO 1000 and 1/640 shutter speed. I haven't shot hockey before this past weekend, so I have a lot of learning to do. Real photographers probably want to slap me in the head and tell me it's a little late in the season to start now.

Okay, a sweep in Mankato this weekend and another one in Fargo the following weekend and then we get to see what this team is made of when the Gophers come to town.

It's never too late to start... unless they've put you in a box and dug a 6 foot hole! I'm 35 now and only started a year ago myself...

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Looking at every other stat, it looks like special teams are the only thing the Dogs need to worry about for the next two weekends. Mankato and ND are currently at #2 and #3 in the country for penalties, but our power play is sitting at 13%. If we can capitalize on their mistakes, I like the chances for two sweeps to bring home eight points when the Gophers come to town. Of course, the Gophers are also playing Mankato and ND these next two weekends, so that adds some suckage to the equation.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

And one more thing before I shut up. I didn't see any media coverage scheduled for the Mankato series, but I might've missed something. UND will have video coverage for $6 a pop at their website:

The Maverick website usually does have free webstreams available for their home games. Their website was recently nicely revamped...but you may have to access "Athletics" through the universities main site...that used to be the case, haven't checked in awhile.

How quickly we forget the first game against Mankato this season ;) I would like to forget it also. I'm most worried about Mankato taking cheap penalties if they get behind by a few goals, and turning either game into a cheap game.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Well, I was TRYING to forget. But I think the Dogs have improved since we last played them more than Mankato has.

I'm expecting North Dakota to go the cheap route. They just suck, so they have nothing to lose. That first game here this season where Friddy got hurt, I think the Sioux took something like 35 minutes in penalties and one of them got a game misconduct. Something to build on for that program. Maybe their coach has gotten them under control.

Even though UND's record should be better next season, don't expect their penalty minutes to decline from what you're seeing now...

Probably, because you've added #3 and you have more impact in your rookie class. But remember that their coaching staff is all new. At some point, the systems and expectations may start to click, and their play could jump up a level. Other factors that could work against you -- you are coming off an emotional series versus UW, you had a short week, and I know a lot of former Gophers didn't like to play in their building. It feels like a HS rink (maybe because it is), and I can see where the road team wouldn't get too worked up for the games. Having said all that, I suppose the 'Dogs will now sweep by something like a 13-1 aggregate.;)

Now why would you say that? :p

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

True, but then why the heck is MSU winless this season in their own rink? (0-6-3) Kind of odd.....and I probably just jinxed the Dogs.....

Other than their win in Duluth, they don't have much in the way of wins to write home about -- only other league win is in Grand Forks. They are one of the tougher teams in the WCHA to try to figure out. They started to play better last season around this time (although a coaching change was involved), but for the second straight season, I look at them as being kind of an underachieving team. Where is the effort that got them to the WCHA Final Face-off? If it weren't for shootouts, they'd be in the basement.

For those of you on the edge of your seats, the Mavericks' communication director said their website will have a link to a live video feed of tonight's game "this morning." That was at 11 a.m. (now), but that's good news. I hate road series.

I like road series.. and try to hit at least the St. Cloud series when the UMD men aren't at home.. and might head up to Bemidji for that series, but that depends on high school hockey playoff schedules. I haven't seen the John Glass fieldhouse and it's going away after this season.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Hopefully MSU has invested in some better announcers this year. Last year the two students calling the UMD-MSU game I watched spoke more of the players supposed social lives and sexual preferences than calling the game. The complaint to the AD was met with a promise and review of the announcers comments.

Watched one webstream off the MSU site earlier this season. If the announcers have been upgraded I couldn't tell.

If you don't usually go there, I'd recommend next year with Tomcikova and a new rink over her Olympic absence and the current facility. John Glas is like a HS rink, just bigger.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

The Bulldogs power play needs some work, but a win is a win. They have to stay out of the box, too, even if Mankato isn't a huge threat to capitalize on Bulldog penalties very often. Eight penalties is too many. But the game didn't get chippy and that's good.

I wasn't sure Fridfinnson was going to get up on her own after crashing the boards hard on her left side and then laying there for too long. Geez, that kid has some guts and then she ends up with three points on the night. Good for her.

Nice to see players like Dodge and Ambroz getting more playing time, too. And did I see Lenz playing for a bit or was I seeing things?

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Some of us have been talking about the powerplay for years.. with the scoring threats on these UMD teams it's always been amazing to me that the powerplay hasn't been a LOT better.

It looks like Ambroz is understanding that she needs to have a great showing this year with the talent coming back and coming in next season, to have a shot at not sitting on the bench. She played really well the series against Wisconsin, she was even out there killing off a 5 on 3 at one point.

I was watching high school basketball so I didn't see the game so no idea if Lenz got a shift or two ;) I will see today's if there is video.

Rather than going right to Mankato's website the video link is http://msustr0.campus.mnsu.edu:8080/KDOG

Steck starting for UMD....

Copy and past the URL into your windows media player to allow for adjustable video size.. better than the little tiny un-movable window.
