I'll be more than happy if the U.S. takes home the gold, but it's good for womens hockey to see other teams move up, too.

Now that the long break is over.. Wisconsin comes to the DECC Saturday night (7 pm) and Sunday afternoon (4 pm).. it works out perfect to watch the football game also since that will end around 3:15 then allow those who want to watch hockey come also. No idea why Saturday/Sunday with the men gone to Mankato this weekend but that's the schedule.

We got shifted to the second page again (lack of posting) .. butanyway
UMD played a great first period, took the second off (AFTER they scored 2 goals on 3 early shots,) and played a decent third period tonight.. while Wisconsin completely dominated the second period as far as possession and shots, outshooting UMD 23-3. Harss was the difference, because she stopped 22 of those 23 shots, and it would have been a completely different game had the Badgers come out of the period with more than 1 goal.
Jocelyne Larocque makes UMD's first powerplay group better..allowing Jessica Wong to play forward on it where she should be, causing commotion in front of goaltenders, or taking one timers from the circles.
Stayed after to watch some of the U-14 group championship games for the ice breaker tourney (they started at 9:30 pm in both DECC Arenas) so only halfway through pictures. Saw some of the future high schoolers for Wayzata, Moorhead, and Blaine (Blaine played Thunder Bay.) The U-14 hockey is so much better (and faster) than when I last really saw it a few years back.

Goaltending was totally the difference, Wisco's biggest weakness by far this season. I didn't SEE a UMD shot most of the second period, and yet they scored two goals. Not good if you're a Badger fan. No Vetter = yikes. Dogs lookes good considering they haven't played in a month, and just got back the MLPers Tuesday. Second Place!!

Yup, Harss was clearly the difference. She's coming off a strong tournament last week in Germany, so she was ready to play. Good to see the rookies step up, too. We'll need them when playoff time rolls around.
But even if this Badger team isn't quite as good as past teams (and neither are the Dogs), they're going to take advantage of every opportunity they're given. The Dogs have to put a solid game together Sunday afternoon if they really want the points. They have to play smarter and pick up the pace a bit, too. The Badgers looked like they were on a power play for most of the second period while the Dogs looked confused. When a three-goal lead isn't safe, you know something's got to change.
But the Dogs came away with two points and that's the bottom line.

Great start (to 2010) for UMD, with the sweep of Wisconsin. A good overall game by both teams this time but Wisconsin was obviously frustrated at times.. taking both a 2 minute unsportsmanlike and a 10 minute also.
Both goaltenders ( Alannah McCready and Jenny Harss) misplayed one puck for goals.. Tuominen scored on a puck that McCready let roll out of her glove and down her back (photo of that to come), and Wisconsin's goal by Geena Prough was a puck that was sailed into the zone and waved at by Harss but went over her shoulder. Other than that 1 each, both played really well with Harss getting the #1 star and McCready the #3.

After a month of mostly even fluorescent bulb gyms/arenas had to get used to changing colors of the old DECC lighting.

Do you use your camera's presets or auto white balance or do you use custom white balance? I've had pretty good luck using custom white balance just off the ice surface and the cycling lights don't seem to affect it (knock on wood.) But they ARE a pain in the ***.

I shoot the ice for white balance.. then shoot at 1/800 shutter speed and that tends to catch the lights.. if I do a burst of 3 shots it'll be a little difference each time. I also will overexpose the ice if it means the white UMD jerseys look white.. because of the lights especially.

Interesting that we got the exact shot, though mine's not cropped and I kept the referee in the shot.
If I cropped mine it would almost be interchangeable to your shot in the link:

I think you're shooting at a lower ISO (I actually to go 3200 to get 1/800 ss) and have a bit less work to do on pictures afterwards than I do

Okay, a sweep in Mankato this weekend and another one in Fargo the following weekend and then we get to see what this team is made of when the Gophers come to town.
