Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Katie Wilson's 4 goal 1 assist performance against BC earner her a second Rookie of the Week award..

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Saw the Bulldog-Badger game today. Same team showed up that played Mankato the first nite of that series: soft and wayward passing, lack of hussle, etc. Thought Jennifer Harss did not get the support and protection she should have, particularly given Wisconsin's far more energetic play. Hope the other Bulldog team shows up for Sunday's game.

Will have photos up later tonight or tomorrow from today's game.

few thoughts/questions for the bulldog fans.

Thought the Bulldogs looked like they could care less in the first and second periods as the Badgers pretty much put on a clinic around them. Remind me alot of some of the UW games this year where we seemingly struggled to do much of anything right.

Play got chippy in the third as Audrey Cournoyer showed her goon side quite a few times as well as Tara Gray who got in a few cheap shots before being called for a hook. Not sure if they always play that way or if it was frustration coming out, but I wouldn't want that liability on my team if they play like that consistently.

I was surprised that Emmanuelle Blais was not getting as many touches on the puck. I was expecting her to help set the tempo for the bulldogs however she was pretty much a no-show during the game.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Haven't really seen Cournoyer do anything that physical all season but given that (as people have said) Wisconsin is more a rival to UMD than Minnesota really is.. she could have gotten caught up in that? Not sure since I didn't see the game. Gray's not really a stranger to the penalty box but I wouldn't say she goes out of her way to get one usually.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I don't have an answer for the Blais statement really.. she has shown a little speed but not what we've grown accustomed to her first three years where she can blow by anyone any time she decides to do it.

Rather than indifference, I thought the Dogs play appeared flat and tentative--they seemed unsure of themselves and almost afraid to take the initiative. Their passing and puck handling reflected this. Late in the 3rd period they played a stretch of time as if they were on a penalty kill, despite having all their players on the ice! Had they been trying to preserve a one-goal lead it might have been understandable.

Neither Cournoyer nor Gray are chippy players as a routine. Cournoyer, in particular, looked more frustrated than anything. I was a little surprised at some of the "chippy" play Wisconsin demonstrated. There wasn't a lot of it, but in games I've seen them play the last few years, I've usually noticed little to none.

I do have some photos posted from the game. Will post more later today. Please use the link below to see them. Both suggestions and comments are always welcome.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

It definitely wasn't that way in the early years. Yes, the Badgers/Bulldogs had a fierce rivalry, more so than Badgers/Gophers, but when the two Minnesota schools met, the games had championship implications and everyone knew it. Maybe that's why UMD now speaks as though they are less interested in the in-state rivalry, given the road to championships now leads through Madison. Our games with the Badgers have grown in importance over the years as well, so I get that. It just seems odd to me that UMD acts like they are beyond the UM match-up when they haven't won the H2H in so long.

As far as chippy play goes, neither Gray over the years nor Cournoyer in October has stood out to me in that regard. When the top teams meet, there is going to be physical play, and some of it strays over the line. Shockingly, even the Badgers are the transgressors from time to time!;)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I agree that neither of those players are typically goon-like. Gray is a big girl who perhaps lacks the techincal ability to get out of the way sometimes. While I agree UW and UMD are huge rivals, I do NOT agree that UMD and UM are no longer rivals. Where that comes from, it does not come from within the program, where Minnesota is just as respected as UW.

On a side note, for those of us not there, did anyone else follow the live blog? I followed it and liked the comments from it, but did not message during it. It's on the UMD website for tomorrow as well.

My impression is more one of not focusing on the Gopher rivalry so heavily. I think in the past, Coach Miller has put too much emphasis on beating the Gophers . . .and when the W doesn't go up in the column the team has a fall off for a week or two. I think it's healthier to try to emphasize playing your best every time you face an opponent - regardless of who it is. Again, my sense is that's more of what coach Miller is doing. Probably, I'm wrong.

I too watched the game yesterday and was dismally disappointed in the play of UMD. I don't disagree with any of the assessments already posted. When UMD did have some life in the last 1/3 of the 3rd they played even or outplayed the Badgers.

I'm more in DIGDOG's camp when it comes to Gray. She's not a "goon" type player. She doesn't have the skating speed, or stick skill to do a lot. When she gets lazy or doesn't move her feet she takes really stupid penalites because she's trying to make-up for getting beat. (I won't even get in to her passing . . . Arghhhh!) #88 is usually the UMD player that gets overly aggressive . . . and maybe it was good for Cournoyer to get a little spunky. Playing with passion is something the team certainly could have used more of.

All around a very bad show for UMD . . . hopefully they come out with a little energy on Sunday. And, to not get accused of anything. . . the Badgers showed up and did everything they needed to. They BEAT the Dogs.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Friday's game was a very flat wierd game for the bdogs...not sure what was in their head...the third period was much better but still not the team i have seen play.....As for Cournoyer in fridays game getting aggressive....it takes two to tango and trust me Giles isnt innocent in that one!! Tara isnt a goon, and #88 can be aggressive thats true, but not a goon.....i think she tends to send a message where a message is due.....

Thankfully they came out and played much better on Sunday and were able to pull off a shootout win........

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Just a quick note from UMDBulldogs.com that..
Goaltender Lana Steck did not dress Sunday due to an injury sustained Friday post-game.

So.. she's been injured in pre-game.. and now in post-game activites.. I'm confused (more than usual!)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Nothing to be confused about......that is exactly right but it didnt happen with any crazy activities in the locker room......Hopefully she will be back soon....:):)

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

Tara Gray isn't a chippy player. She's just tall, not very fast and I think she finds herself a step behind the play too often. And her passing skills...ouch. Heads up, Tara.

As far as Cournoyer being chippy, the only time I saw her do anything physical was after Giles bent her over the boards at the Bulldog bench while she was trying to get off the ice. I'd retaliate in that situation, too. Giles had it coming. But she's going to be a player to watch. She and Wong and Wilson are impressing me this year.

And Jaime Rasmussen isn't chippy, but she'll defend Harss and anyone else in a scrap. She's improved her game every year and it's been fun to watch. Frankly, I didn't like her as a freshman, but she's made a believer out of me.

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

I was hoping for a large CEC group at the DECC for this weekend's series, but the Lumberjack girls are playing in Wayzata on 2 pm Saturday, so hopefully some from Cloquet show up Sunday to watch three of their own on the ice in the same college game, for the first time ever I'm pretty sure.

Not the first time. BSU with Lundquist and Vichorek has already played MSU and Thunder, plus UM with Maunu.

Somehow I spaced Maunu out, and she's been the most successful CEC grad at the college level (playing 4 years where Ellison had to wait for stuff to happen to get her shot.) I never realized that Thunder played the second BSU/Mankato game either.. :D can I blame the -20 windchill I was out in this afternoon before posting?

Yeah, but up there, -20 even in real temps, forget windchill, is condsidered short-sleeve weather.

It's different this year.. I was out in shorts during part of November still.. taking forever to get used to it this year. We need the snow to insulate!

Re: Bulldogs 09-10 Season

While I will agree with anyone that this isn't the same Bemidji team that's come to Duluth over the 10 years.... they now have an offense.. it's time to recruit some more defense that can skate. They seemed to be the slowest defensive skating team that's come to the DECC this year. UMD's defense isn't all that speedy, but the Beaver D made them seem faster at times.

UMD had so many second chances in front of Tomcikova in the second period, and the puck was bouncing all over the place or it could have been another 8-1 game over BSU. I'm not sure how well the pucks were froze cause there were a lot of strange bounces at the men's game tonight also.

BSU didn't lay down and die either.. putting 18 shots on net in the third period, despite being outscored 3-0 in the period.
