BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

when parker cant intimidate and manipulate the refs, he blames them. hysterical.

Naw, he is just very volatile and very passionate. He thought his team was getting a raw deal. Once RPI had the game in hand, he took out his frustration on the officials.

His comments might get a response form the HE commissioner. Maybe Parker should have taken a lap top into the post game interview session.

Dropping three out of your last four games will cause some frustration and cause teams and coaches to do and say things, Im sure the HE will slap Parker on the wrist because he is Jack Parker.

My feature on RPI for Inside Hockey.

Excellent article!

BTW, I noticed you mentioned at the top of your live blog that RPI fans were booing the referees before the game started. That's not an every night occurrence.
A) RPI fans have specific beef with Hicks - he waved off an apparent RPI goal with less than 10 seconds left at Union that would have tied the game. Video replay makes one wonder why.
B) I'm sure you understand in hindsight how awful he is. Parker was fairly justified in his remarks, but RPI was busy getting the raw end during the 1st period as well. That they came out with a 2-0 lead despite it, in my view, was even more impressive.

Why do we have to get this type of press from an out of town reporter and not from You Know Who !

To be excessively fair, Ken Schott was at the RPI/BU game last night and skipped the Union/Army game. Considering Union is his main beat, that underscores his understanding of the importance of last night's game.

maybe he cuts the rpi games once and for all.... our last trip out there in 2006 had two issues. the first was Seth got a call from Jack requesting a flip of game tape - Seth said, "no thanks", which didn't sit well. then the game itself was another whistlefest with bu beating rpi on penalties 2-to-1. after that we didn't play for a while (after playing seemingly every year).

of course, the game yesterday was decided by one team playing well, and the losing team just getting beat.

Thanks for that, time to add Houston Fieldhouse?

Indeed. Pretty neat barn. Having my laptop out and live blogging from the stands (not enough room in the press box) was fun, too.

Very nice article. :)

Excellent article!

Thank you. Appert and Polacek were great quotes. Polacek's one of the two or three most well-spoken players I've interviewed in 2+ years covering college hockey.

Thanks for clarifying. I just thought it was great to hear boos rain down as soon as they stepped out there. And yeah, the officiating was terrible at best. Even before things got out of hand in the third, I commented that most of the calls in the game were soft.

Then the combination of a questionable trip on Pereira, a missed hit from behind by RPI and a questionable interference on Megan really set BU off. Up until that point, I thought the officiating was equally bad both ways and just hurt the game more than anything, but that sequence felt very anti-BU. To call two softies on BU and not call what I thought (and what BU thought) was a textbook hit from behind on RPI really makes you wonder. I don't blame Parker for being as mad as he was, but I also don't condone the BU players taking out their frustration on RPI with a bunch of cheap shots and thuggish behavior. And certainly Parker deserves blame for letting that happen. Once that started happening with the Nicastro cross check and Chiasson fight, he had to be able to settle down his players and let them know that was not an acceptable way to respond to poor officiating. Instead, the goonery continued. That's on the whole team, Parker included. They should be embarrassed, both by their play and by their actions at the end of the game.

Coach Appert seemed to respect Coach Paker in his postgame interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K23UY2181A4&feature=channel.

i believe they spoke some time after the first game and Seth may have mea culpa'd to Jack as it was his first game, etc.. and we did get the schedule back on track. *i did think your coach did a great job on the quick post-period interviews. gave real answers to the questions (which you don't tend to see/hear on other tv broadcasts). seems like you have a very good coach there who can get players-just need a way to keep them for a year or two before they bolt ;)

I recall that they spoke at that time also.

I'll probably incur Red Cloud's wrath again, but we also have to keep Coach Appert from bolting. :)

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

Out of curiosity, care to share off the top of your head which other players impressed you in interviews?

The interview that stuck with me the most last season was Mark Arcobello of Yale after their loss to BC in the regional final. He had a hat trick in the game and sat at the front of the room and told the media he could've done more and that the hat trick meant nothing because they lost. That's the most respect I've ever gained for one player in an interview. And also the worst I've felt for one player in an interview (he was a senior).

BC's Ben Smith and Matt Price were always great interviews because they were well-spoken and just straight-up class acts. BU's Kevin Shattenkirk was a great interview all season, too, because he was well-spoken and always took responsibility for the team's struggles. He never called anyone else out and after the season, he said he could've been a better captain, which I thought said a lot about him.

Polacek is probably the best interview I've had so far this year. Chris Connolly of BU has been good all season, too. No one else has really stood out in terms of being well-spoken and giving good answers to every question yet. Obviously some guys are funny and give great one-liners, but that's not really what I'm talking about here.

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

Really enjoyed the BU fans that were on this thread over the last few days, Very fair and they know there stuff. For those who spoke about Jack getting suspended, that won't happen because HE doesn't let reporters dictate suspension policy. For some of us that were concerned about Hicks, it was born out by his less than adequate officiating in front of a national TV audience. His game misconduct of Capt. Jack at the end of the game speaks to his lack of command of a game (and rabbit ears). Skate off the ice and let it go. Comm. Hagwell needs to reexamine the league's relationship with Paul Stewart, ECAC is becoming a laughing stock.

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

Some terrific shots. I like the sequence on the first goal.

That sequence is interesting because Warsofsky took a lot of abuse from the BU folks for supposedly screening his goalie. From that sequence it appears that Rollheiser had a clear view of the shot and Chase just beat him. Just as important, the latter shots show that CJ Lee obviously came cleanly down the other side (he shows up as the puck riccochets out of the net with no BU defenseman in sight) so Warsofsky's job on a 2 on 1 is to cut off the angle for a pass. It's hard to tell from the stills whether he was in the proper position for that.

that wasn't a 2 on 1. both BU defensemen were backing up (warsofsky on the left, noonan to his right) and letting RPI come forward. even if BU wasn't on the PP at the time, you need to step up and make contact, they instead were expecting the puck carrier to dump and change. lazy. incredibly lazy. something we've had to witness too often the past couple months.
