BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

Yes they are. Zhilikin was crossed off. Hes signing in OHL

Seems this recruit was the BU staff taking a flyer on the kid in case he decided to go the college route. Wasn't projected to get here until fall '22, so plenty of time to fill the spot.

Wilmer and Boucher were taken by Ottawa in later rounds. Both, along with Schmidt, are set to play for the NTDP U17s next season.

At the Tier 1, 16U Nationals, Wilmer is the top scorer after four games (11 pts.). 2022 recruit Devin Kaplan is the leading goal scorer with six (3 two-goal games).

Yeah, especially seeing that he plays for Selects, where I believe Josh Lawrence was playing when he committed.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

Just prior to the new recruiting rules go into effect, BU has its first 2023 recruit.

Mid Fairfield right-shot forward Ryan Fine becomes the first ‘05 to commit to a NCAA program, choosing Boston University after visiting the campus recently. Highly skilled, will likely be at NTDP down the road.
— Jeff Cox (@JeffCoxSports) April 26, 2019

In New England Hockey Journal, Cox also reported:
Fine, from Center Moriches, N.Y., plays for Mid-Fairfield. He spent the 2018-19 season on the bantam minor team, coached by former NHL star Marty St. Louis, whose son Lucas is also on the team.

Fine visited the Boston University campus Friday morning prior to taking part in the Eastern Exposure Hockey All-Star Weekend at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center.

Fine is certainly one of the top ‘05s in the United States and will be a candidate for the 2021-22 USA Hockey NTDP U-17 team.
Fine was the MVP of last summer's Crimson Combine.
USHR: Ryan Fine (Mid-Fairfield) -- "A skilled, smart, natural goal scorer who is unselfish and makes plays. Clever and a pure skater -- he just glides."

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

Does he still require a babysitter?

Now that we are talking about kids that are actually younger than my 9th-grade hockey player, it is that much more apparent how ludicrous it is to be making a college choice at that age. Some of these kids are just hitting puberty, and they are supposed to decide where they want to spend four of their most formative years, 4 to 5 years away? I know that it many cases these kids are projecting to be two year players, so maybe it doesn't really matter what they study, whether or not the school has a major they care about, etc. But it just makes a joke of the idea of college athletics.

I for one, am glad that the new rules are going in.

I think it's a win-win for both prospective student-athletes and the schools. Fewer decommitments will result and it puts further premium on coaches recruiting the right players for their programs than just seeking a verbal "commitment" from kids at such a young age as a means of deterring other coaches from poaching, or CHL teams from convincing them that Major Jr is the way to go.

I know the criticism isn't levied at a kid line Fine more so than the current process. I hope Fine matures and develops into the player he's projected to be, honors his commitment and ends up being a terrific player at BU. But there's so much that can happen between now and 2023.

I had heard last December at the St Sebastian's holiday tournament that he was reconsidering his BU choice
Probably waited to see that he was accepted
Good size but probably a bottom 6 forward

Gorman's dad played for Princeton in the late 80s, early 90s when the Tigers' assistant coach was, yup, Len Quesnelle. HC Jim Higgins was a BU alum. Hearing Gorman was getting a partial, so this might enable Albie to go after another forward for next season.

The HockeyWriters.com jumped Robert Mastrosimone from #54 to #32 on its draft board.
