BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

A few points regarding the Greeley departure:

-While this has yet to be confirmed, Greeley will be in the Rangers front office. One source indicated that he’ll be assistant GM for the Rangers, clearly a career advancement. Rangers have been looking to get younger in the front office with Sather giving up the GM title.

-This was bound to happen sooner or later. We all know Greeley’s track record since coming aboard in July 2013. At a recent BU fan gathering, it was pointed out that according to longtime NHL exec Jack Ferreira (who worked with Steve in Los Angeles), there is no better talent evaluator in hockey than Greeley.

-Let’s not forget that Albie O’Connell , whose been part of the recruiting equation for more than a year, has a pretty good track record, too. He convinced both Gaudreau and Gillies to commit to Northeastern, brought some big names to Harvard and was given credit for the Crimson’s strong power play.

-Nevertheless, Greeley’s exceptional recruiting skills will be missed, but if Scott Young is his replacement, I’d imagine plenty of kids will welcome that chance to be coached by a 19-year NHLer, two-time Cup champ and a multiple Olympian.

All good points.

For years I've stated that a head coach is only as good as his assistant coaches. I've done done the stats that show Coach Parker had his best years when he had top assistants, although I've not compiled stats for other head coaches. I've also said the best assistant coaches will move on to better jobs, usually head coaching jobs. If Coach Greeley is leaving for a new position that he wants and which helps him to reach his career goals, then it's nothing that should be unexpected. The real issue is who Coach Quinn adds to the coaching staff to replace him and who, if anyone, becomes the new associate head coach.

Reports are that Scott Young will move from Director of Hockey Ops to a coaching position. However, it's unclear if he'll directly backfill Greeley as Associate HC, or if Albie will be promoted to Associate HC with Young transitioning to Assistant HC. It'll also be interesting to see what Young can contribute on the recruiting front, which is one competency Greeley excelled in.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

NTDP U18 defenseman Chad Krys today tweeted his commitment to BU, joining the 2016 recruit class. A blueliner who modeled his game on that of Terrier All-American Kevin Shattenkirk, he was called up from the U17s last spring to the U18s and joined current BU freshman Charlie McAvoy as the top defensive pairing and helped them win the IIHF World Championship.

Eligible for the 2016 draft, he is one of four BU recruits projected to go in the first round, along with McAvoy, Clayton Keller and Kieffer Bellows.

Four future Terriers, Krys, Keller, Bellows and goalie Jake Oettinger will skate at Agganis in the Oct. 16 exhibition game against the U18s.

More later on the blog.

Awesome news. Helps take the sting off the Letunov and Greeley news.

So we have Jake, Keifer, Keller and Krys for 2016, all NDTP. Last time was the Fab 4 (McConnell, Maiser, Miller, and Whitney). Trying to come up with a clever name for this group of K's, but striking out (pun intended). :D

One starts with a J and is a 2018?

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Hey Rogie - Oettinger isn't listed in the recruit section of the blog.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Oettinger, not Wise. I believe Oettinger is for 2016. But yes, I took liberties with where in his his name the K is.
Oh, got it.

Class reminds me of the "E Street Band" as we called them in 05/06 in KEssEl, WhEElEr, and FrazEE or "O-Town" in 06/07 in Okposo, JOhnsOn, and O'Brien.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Jeff Cox tweeting that another NTDP player is getting ready to commit to BU. Any guesses?

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

When he said not unexpected I thought Greenway, but someone already asked and he said no. Barratt?

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

I just looked - not too many uncommitted on either the U-18 or U-17 teams. I don't know anything about any of the uncommitteds other than Greenway, and all I really know about him is that he is Jordan's brother.

Heisenberg hasn't listed Oettinger as committed either. Poor Jake, he is the Rodney Dangerfield of recruits...
