BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Huh, I thought we were expecting Piccinich to be one of those guys that makes steady improvements each off-season until he becomes a key contributor as a senior. This would be disappointing news.

Well of course, that's the impression I get whenever checking the updates on this recruiting thread ;)

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

I assume you guys know that MacTavish isn't going to BU? I'm happy that UAA picked him up. I'm guessing that BU's coaches weren't projecting him well versus the other freshmen and he understood that?

Yeah, it didn't seem like he was going to get the playing time he wanted, based on the overall talent level on the team, so it sounds like he and BU agreed to part ways, and BU helped him find a new home.

I hope he does well for UAA.

Losing Letunov will hurt. He was expected to be an immediate and major contributor on one of the top lines, and make BU very deep down the middle. Not having Letunov will put even more pressure on others to contribute a little more offensively. Hopefully they can bring Cloonan in this year and that he can contribute in the right role in the lineup.

BU has lost 3 returning (Eichel, Duane, Piccinich) & 2 incoming (Letunov, MacTavish) F in offseason.

Who's head should we go after for this one? This seems like a very significant unlike the others.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

BU has one of the larger international student populations in the country and they couldn't find a way to get this guy in?

Is it couldn't? Or admissions wouldn't?

I believe Letunov spent the first part of his HS years in Russia and finished HS in the States while playing in the USHL. FWIW I heard a while back there were concerns about this possibly happening, but that parties were confident they could get this resolved.

That's what a reporter on twitter mentioned. It is not a grades issue, it seems to be more of a procedural issue with his Russian transcripts (from first 2 years in HS). That is why I mentioned BU's international student background. If any school could get this settled I would think it would be BU. If Letunov is a good enough student, it is a shame that paperwork is getting into the way. Of course I've learned to take anything on BU hockey on twitter with a grain of salt and hopefully the full story comes out.

Speaking about twitter rumors, have we heard anything definitive about the Piccinich situation?

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

I guess BU admin only looks the other way if you can pay full freight.

Good job Brownie

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Oops

I knew not all of the gazillion recruits would end up still going to BU ;)

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

**** poor considering they had plenty of time to get the paperwork thing worked out for an elite recruit. Quinn must be livid . 6'3" first or second line center. Almost wish BC grabbed him just to make the screw up more painful . I did say "almost"

This is what ****es me off. I'm happy BU upholded their admissions standards, but for heaven's sake couldn't they have made this decision months ago so the spot could be filled? BU only has a gajillion international students applying every year, this isn't rocket science for them.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

I don't think anyone thought they would all end up going to BU.

Agreed. IMO the current staff has been edging towards over-recruiting, knowing that not everyone whom they've offered and received a verbal from will ever suit up at BU. However, in recent weeks, there have already been 3 recruits (Letunov, MacTavish, Sherwood) -- each with a different reason -- who will play hockey elsewhere.

I know this staff places a premium on recruiting and know there are some risks they have to take at times with recruits they target possibly never showing up at BU. However, I also think this staff is more willing to take such risks and also have alternate plans in place to build talent & depth throughout the roster.

I believe that this same sort of thing happened with the Abramson kid last summer. Based on how he played at UVM, he would have been a big add for the BU program and I assume that Coach Quinn thought that his admission was not an issue. Too bad as Letunov may be a great one, not just a good one. Props to UConn.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

The Letunov loss really stings, both for how close it is to the season, and because of why it has happened. MacTavish- he was a recruited walk-on who fell too far in the depth chart as the recruiting improved. And the Sherwood loss was something nobody could have expected. If he had been drafted, he would not have signed so soon, and perhaps could have been accelerated to come next year.

So who replaces Letunov as 2nd/3rd line pivot?
