BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Well that's good news, if it holds true. Still a long way to go, but Eichel sounds more and more like a one and done the more I read about him. However, I will state for the record....I would in fact like to see him in Scarlet and White for that one year.:D:D

USHR’s review of the USA Hockey Select 16 includes glowing reports on 2014 recruits, forward Jack Eichel and d-man Jonathan MacLeod, both headed to the NTDP U17s this season.

Eichel (6-2, 180): Cemented his status as the top ’96 player in the US here -- and by a fairly wide margin…. Because Eichel is not draft eligible until 2015, that means Boston University will get him for at least one year, but we would be surprised if he is in college longer than that. Our only knock on the Junior Bruins product is that he does not give 100% effort throughout the game, but when he turns it on he is a treat to watch. ..we feel that Eichel and Erie Otters (OHL) phenom Connor McDavid could well be the top two North American prospects in [the 2015 NHL] draft

MacLeod (6-2, 185, ranked #2 defenseman): Physically imposing and downright nasty in his own end. MacLeod makes the life of opposing forwards just miserable. The NTDP has a good one here — someone you want in the trenches with you. He has a pretty good stick and a good shot and as he gains confidence we think he will bring more to the table than just being a physical, stay-at-home defender. A Boston University recruit and potential NHL first round pick.

I'd also gladly take one year...and hope for two.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

USHR reports today of a new recruit, "An Athlete for the Terriers." Anyone got a subscription?

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Dalton MacAfee, defenseman out of St. Sebs for 2013. Lacrosse player that had committed to play lacrosse for Notre Dame and now decided to go full time with hockey instead. Interestingly just after BC grabbed Heisman Finalist Joe Dudek's kid, BU grabbed their own son of a Heisman Finalist.

Is he staying at St. Sebs for this season? Or playing Junior?

The USHR report says he'll be a senior at St. Sebs, where he was the second leading scorer among Ds. Also: "MacAfee is a highly-mobile, puck-moving defenseman who is also very good in his own end. MacAfee played very well at Harvard’s camp a couple of weeks ago, where BU assistant Mike Bavis watched him closely. BU moved fast. MacAfee is a good student, and the Ivies were reportedly starting to move on him."

MacAfee is the fifth Massachusetts skater in the 2013 class (Baillargeon, Collier, Hetnik, Somerby) and there are four in this year's class (Grzelcyk, Kurker, Moran and O'Regan). Wasn't too long ago we were hearing complaints that BU doesn't recruit locally enough.

Barring the unforeseen, Terrier defense looks to be in good shape for the next few years.
2011 Privitera
2012 Grzelcyk, Oksanen
2013 Hetnik, MacAfee, Somerby
2014 MacLeod

Again, USHR reports "Another Top Recruit for the Terriers." Sorry to be a mooch but I don't have a subscription. Who can report?

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

JJ Piccinich is BU’s third ’96 recruit—joining Jack Eichel and Jonathan MacLeod—and is scheduled to arrive at Agganis Way in 2014 or 2015. He’s also the third Terrier recruit in recent years from the NJ Avalanche program, the others being Alexx Privitera and 2013 recruit Jarrid Privitera.

A 5-11 right wing, he led the Avalanche U16s in scoring with 23-19-42 in 22 games, then added 8 points in four games at the U16 Nationals. He also played high school hockey and led his team in scoring. An invitee to the March NTDP camp this past March, he’ll play for the USHL Youngstown Phantoms this year.

USHR, which projects him as a top six forward in college: “A gritty, hard-working, intelligent player, Piccinich can really shoot a puck and make plays.” His skating isn’t top end, according to a few sources, but he’ll have two USHL seasons to work on it and Mike Boyle has a track record of helping players with very good skills and hockey sense improve their skating (Mike Pandolfo, Nick Bonino, etc.)

Phantoms Director of Player Personnel Jason Koehler:
“J.J. Piccinich is one of the United States’ elite level power forwards and goal scorers in the 1996 birth class. J.J. had some tough choices to make for where he would play next season and continue his development and we are excited he chose to join our program and family next season. He’s going to be a great addition to the team and bring a tough two-way power forward with strong goal-scoring ability that also finishes all of his checks. Our fans will enjoy watching him as we see him as someone that will be a comparable player to our leading goal scorer this year — JT Stenglein.”

A strong student—like MacAfee who committed last week—he was also being pursued by several Ivies and reportedly BC and PC, too.

Phantoms announcement of Piccinich's verbal

Forward JJ Piccinich commits to Boston University
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Youngstown Phantoms and head coach Anthony Noreen take great pride in announcing that forward JJ Piccinich has committed to play collegiate hockey at Boston University beginning in Fall 2014. Piccinich, 16, is entering his first season with the Phantoms after signing a United States Hockey League tender in April.
Piccinich (pronounced pik-nik) becomes 11th player on the Phantoms’ current roster, and first this season, to commit to play NCAA Division I hockey.

“We’re very proud of JJ,” Noreen said. “He’s yet to play his first game in our jersey but we spent a year scouting him and obviously got to know him quite well. We’re extremely fortunate that he chose our program and we’re excited to work with him for the next few years before he moves on to Boston.”

Piccinich, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound winger from Paramus, N.J., played last season with the Under-16 North Jersey Avalanche AAA team of the Atlantic Youth Hockey League. In 22 games last season, he netted 23 goals and added 19 assists for 42 points. His 23 goals and 42 points we both tops in the entire AYHL.

He said Boston’s staff, led by head coach Jack Parker, who ranks No. 3 on the all-time NCAA wins list with an 853, and team’s rich history played a big role in his commitment.
“I’m just happy to be a Terrier. The coaching staff is great and it’s such a great program with excellence throughout it. It was an easy decision,” Piccinich said. “I’m really looking forward to focusing the next two years with the Phantoms and using this commitment [as motivation] to help me.”

The Terriers are five-time national champions, with their most recent title coming in 2009. Last season Boston finished second in Hockey East with a 17-9-1 record (23-15-1 overall) last season, and advanced to the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament.

Former Phantoms goaltender Matthew O’Connor, the franchise’s all-time leader in wins, is a freshman on Boston’s roster this season.

Former Terrier Matt Radoslovich is a coach in the NJ Avalanche organization where Piccinich has played the past few years.

Dirk Diggler - known for his ample stickwork in the penalty box - commits for 2014.
Diggler said "I heard they have awesome training facilities at BU."

Just sayin'.. if I was a teenage male hockey prospect and I read that report, I would immediately sign a NLOI.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

2014 recruit Jack Eichel scored twice in his first NTDP U17 game, a 4-3 loss to 2014 recruit JJ Piccinich and Youngstown.

McGlynn was impressive last night. Plays a great Power Forward roll. Goes to the hard areas, hits and can skate. Will be a nice edition to the strong incoming 2013 class. Santini and Savage looked good with the nod going to Savage last night. Both players can skate and are good size Other BC recruites on hand are Adam Gilmore and Goal tender Chirs Birdsall. Birdsall was impressive for a 16 year old. Not the biggest goal tender but challenged the shooters and showed good movement in the crease. Gilmore looked ok. Needs the bring some physical play to his game. Skates well. Didn't see much time with the puck.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

ESPN Boston reported a few days ago: Per St. John's Prep hockey coach Kristian Hanson, junior forward Tyler Bird will visit Boston University this week.

Bird, a 6-2 LW, skated on SJP's top line last season with BU freshman Sam Kurker and recent PC commit Brian Pinho. This fall he's playing for the New England Fall Prep Hockey League's North team along with 2013 recruit Doyle Somerby. http://www.salemnews.com/sports/x1052793060/Prepped-For-Success
