BU Hockey '24-'25: Reloaded for another Frozen Four run

What a bummer. Other than being too excited and coming out on the ice before the allowed time (I’m still in disbelief). I think I like Mike. Great instincts, and quick reactions. Defense was much improved tonight - BC is probably the biggest handful in the country for a defense. I can’t stand losing to those guys, but all in all it was a step in the right direction on the defensive side. Fowler was solid, if not spectacular again all weekend. I would say the big disappointment offensively was missing out on ALL of our odd man rushes. Should have gotten at least one of those.

Nice to get your feet wet in, you know, the biggest rivalry in college hockey. On the road…Right after your team lost last night… I guess we’ll see what the kid has, huh?

My initial thought is that this kid is the real deal. Hope he's the game-breaking player this team needs

Both these games were winnable with the new goalie. Couldn't be more encouraged and this is a much more dangerous team with him in the net. We lost both games to BC last year before we beat them in the Beanpot. That could easily happen again.

What game were you guys watching on Friday? You're encouraged by that performance? Yikes. They were terrible! It could have been worse as they handed the puck to BC in their own end two more times in the first period alone that could have easily ended up in the net. This all happening on their home ice no less.

Usually after getting humiliated at home you're primed for a bounce back game. Instead we get shut out. This team should be better than this. I get that they don't have the same talent as last year but this is too much of a drop off. Pando, start earning your paycheck and right the ship.

Agree. Friday awful. Saturday better. I don't think I've ever seen that penalty called.

Let me see if I can try to communicate what the writer was trying to do. For pretty much all of my 28 years following BU, when they play BC I usually have a pit in my stomach during games and think “oh $hit, here they come.” No lead is safe w BC, as their radio or TV guys often say, “the Eagles are buzzing”. I didn’t have a pit in my stomach once this weekend. There were times Friday where I thought BC was having very good stretches. 2 of BC first 4 goals on Friday were the result of BU’s ineptitude - 1st goal breakaway and 3rd goal Cole Hutson acting like a scared matador saying pardon me to Ryan Leonard and allowing him to blow past him not even having the slightest idea of Leonard’s capabilities. The 2nd goal was an incredible tip. The 4th goal Caron actually steered the rebound to the corner like he’s supposed to (unlike last Friday vs UNH when he was praised but I thought he was dreadful leaving multiple rebounds in front of the crease). My point, and I think the writer’s point, is that for the most part we beat ourselves like we’ve been doing all season.

a few more points:

1. last year’s BC team was much more dangerous.
2. maybe this year’s BC team is playing a more structured game which may result in them winning their last game of season.
3. what a terrible job by Pandolfo “taking responsibility” for the protocol penalty. Reminded me of my kids saying “I know it’s my fault, BUT”. Refs are calling that penalty 100 times out of 100, anyone who follows college hockey closely knows that.
4. I think we found a goalie who could carry this team down the stretch. The team also played much better in front of him. I think that means something. What does Pandolfo do next two weekends given that only on game Friday then Beanpot Monday? Caron was really good last season and like the rest of the team has been consistently inconsistent this season. Do you just put him on the bench?
5. Cole Hutson is criminally overrated. Dreadful first semester followed by great world juniors and start of second semester. Regressed to first semester play this weekend. Don’t see how many said he was better than Lane, not even close. Would be a huge mistake if he goes pro after this season. If so, say hello to Adam Clendening’s career.
6. I really like Eiserman and for the most part I think he’s been a 200-foot player. You can also see his skill by beautiful skating and touch sauce passes other than the obvious great shot. Like Hutson, would be a huge mistake if he leaves after this season. If so, say hello to Oliver Whalstrom’s career.
7. BU teams Pandolfo’s first two seasons COMPETED. Rarely lost a wall battle. Can’t say the same this season.

I don’t watch enough games to comment on this authoritatively, but beyond the obvious impact of Celebrini and Hutson going pro, the loss of Webber and C. McCarthy sure seems huge.

Yes agreed those two and up front and leadership wise losing Tuch, Peterson, Stevens. Having Kaplan as a leader says it all and LaChance is good but not a going concern for the opponent. Zetterberg boy did he drop off the edge. Pandolfo coming up short on the coaching in a “transition” year compared to how Brown has handled it at BC after losing 2 of their superstars. I don’t take anything out of this weekend other than potentially a better goaltender. The # of turnovers was frightening at the worst times. Couldn’t score 5 on 5 for 120 minutes as having supposed one of the top offenses in the country. Just a dreadful display against your #1 rival. If anything the scores underplayed the differences in the two teams. There was a clear difference between championship caliber and run of the mill average. And BU played scared from my view

RE:
4. I think we've found the goalie we've been lacking. He will be a difference maker. Jay has to play him. He can give this team the backbone it needs.
5. We forget that Lane stayed at BU for two years. And Cole isn't Lane, not even close. If he's smart he'll stay more than two years.
6. I also like Eiserman. He's been an enigma, and I think he's just pressing too much. If he could relax, his natural game will come back to him. Like Cole, he needs to stay and build his game. Very few can shoot like him.

I actually feel optimistic after last night. We played BC hard and well - and BC is absolutely the best team in the NCAA (and it pains me to say that, as a BU alum). If we play like that for the rest of the season, we'll go far.

Completely agree!

Agree. Friday awful. Saturday better. I don't think I've ever seen that penalty called.

It was called against UMass when we played them last year because they did the same thing. The protocol violations overall were a point of emphasis from the NCAA rule committee last year so there's no excuse for the staff and captains to not know about it. It's entirely on them to not have communicated to the team how to properly do the rookie lap within the bounds of the rules. The kid ended up darting onto the ice a full 1-2 minutes before the refs even came on the ice, so he came on about 2-3 minutes before they were supposed to. It was egregious and it was right to be called instead of a warning.

Also spoke to some concerning lack of attention to detail things from this weekend. The wishy washy attempts to pull of Caron on Friday night, the fact that Engum was out on the extra attacker situation last night - both things that suggest the staff had a bad weekend.

I think BC is clearly the best defensive team in the nation. I'm not convinced they're absolutely the best top to bottom team. Their offense is very, very good but a step down from last season. A team with more focus and attention to detail than us could've caught them either or both nights this weekend.

That has been the most impressive thing about BC this weekend, and I am including Fowler in that. The BC defense is not flashy. They don't have a Hutson or Willander offensively on the blueline. But they are solid, solid, solid. They get the puck out of the defensive zone and make very few mistakes.

On Friday, I don't think BU should have pulled the goalie down 2-4 with a powerplay. Try and score on the powerplay, and then look to pull the goalie. That empty net goal effectively ended the game.

I wouldn't blame Caron on three of the four goals he gave up on Friday. But Yegorov's play tonight is going to give Pandolfo something serious to think about.

BU's team discipline was better this weekend, but playing without Celebrini and Frechette left the defense short and overworked against a skilled opposition.

One other thing, as an alum, it is an embarrassment when the student sections on both sides chant "**** BC" and "**** BU." Both sides should be able to come up with much more clever insults.

I hear you it is juvenile and embarrassing but we're all young and stupid at one time. I was sitting beside two BC students in the BU section and they were going back and forth all game.

JOFA, take a chill pill. Your overreacting will put you in a hospital if you don't get a grip.

What did I say that you disagree with? Be specific. This “rivalry” is becoming like the hammer and nail as Shank Shaughnessy would say. I’m sorry they were “pwned” again. It would be nice if more “fans” on here cared as much as me . It seems like most are just happy about the social interactions and what the new concession items are.

Agree with you completely. I don't get the idea that we should be happy to sit back and take comfort in getting swept by our rivals and blown out on our own ice. The team continues to be plagued by the same mistakes they've been making all year.

Interesting games this weekend. Another bizarre chapter in the series. Reminded me of the time the BU goalie had to sit in the penalty box and serve his own penalty at Conte a while back.

I have to say the quotes from Pandolfo in the post-game really make me wonder about him. Does he have CTE? Last year Kim Brandvold cried like a baby on NESN about officiating in a BC-BU game and now this season we have Pandolfo blaming the Conte staff for opening the door (really?), the refs for enforcing the rules, and then says "I'll take responsibility," cries more about it, then finishes with "it’s my fault. I’ll take responsibility.” Quite a lot to unpack there in his quote but Jay, that is not how you take responsibility for something no matter how many times you say it.

Yegorov looked good and I think it does make BU much more of a factor through the remainder of the season. We all knew Caron was a bad goaltender and this move to bring in Yegorov mid-semester was the right move for both the Russian (Omaha is a mess) and BU. Let's see how this pans out.

Caron is not a bad goaltender. Knock it off. He's not Fowler, on that we can all agree, but to call him bad is ridiculous.

And that stupid penalty at the start of the game is NOT the reason BU lost. Their inability to KILL A STUPID PENALTY is. So, they got penalized. Big deal. Do your job and kill the penalty. I hate whining about refs' calls. Was it stupid? Yes. How it happened - who cares? You know how you overcome it? KILL THE STUPID PENALTY. Also...it might help if you could put the puck in the net. It was basically a 1-0 game (the empty netter notwithstanding). It seemed like a pretty even game for the most part, so one simple goal to tie it should have been doable.

sometimes goalies just become bad (fleury), then after a while find it.
sometimes they become bad and never find it again (Sean fields, Matt Murray, Tristan jarry).
strange position that goalie…
