BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

The forward production outside of Celebrini on this team needs to improve if this team is going anywhere. When they’re not playing the bad teams in the league, BU gets nothing out of them. That 2nd PP unit … woof

I think the opposite. I think Celebrini has the better all around game while Eichel was superior offensively. If someone who knew nothing about hockey went to watch both players their freshman seasons, I think Eichel would always stand out while Celebrini would not. Eichel was a force with the puck (and had it on his stick a ton), was an incredible skater, and had amazing vision. I think Celebrini plays more of a “pro” game, similar to Brady Tkachuk. If the play dictates that Celebrini receive a pass and immediately wrap it around the offensive zone, that’s what he does. Eichel would have taken the puck off the wall and tried to make something happen. My point in bringing up Tkachuk is that I never that he was worthy of being considered a top-5 pick in his draft year because he didn’t dominate in college. He very well may be the premiere power forward in the NHL. Eichel’s skill level was off the charts while Celebrini’s is very high which he augments with off the charts compete, a great motor, as well as always making the right play. I think there is a chance he returns for sophomore season depending on what team drafts him, either by his choice or their’s. For example, not sure he’d rush to get to San Jose whereas another team still rebuilding may not want to burn a year of his contract before it needs to and would be quite content to let Pandolfo and his staff continue to develop him as a player (which I don’t think would ever have been under consideration w/Albie).

I’m also slightly concerned about Eiserman slipping down to #8 in some draft boards mostly because he is viewed as being a “dog” meaning incredible goal scorer but doesn’t commit/effort a full 200 foot game.

Agree 100% on the Eichel vs. MC comparison. I have been saying all season: You could watch three shifts and know right away that Eichel was a man amongst boys. His effortless accelerating stride and core strength stood out to any observer (I still love watching that old "I Like Eich" Hobey promotional video to see how he created separation in two strides). There were times when I would ask "how does this guy not score 4 goals every game?". With Celebrini, it may take a full game to realize how good he is. He is a lot like Chris Drury in that his skill and determination are both off the charts. And it is his anticipation of the play and just knowing where to be at all times that sets him apart. This difference is why I think MC would benefit from another year at BU, whereas for Jack it just seemed like he would be wasting his talent since there was NO doubt he would be able to step right in at the NHL level and be a top line guy.

Willander looked very good at the start of the season but has had his moments of "what are you doing?" since then. You can see the talent, but he seems to have lost some confidence and that is part of the challenge with the second unit. Also, not having Tuch out there on that group hurts too.

Did someone just skip over Batesy??

The fact that Zabaneh skating does not translate to production diminishes it to me. As opposed especially to Bates who was a huge producer and finished at an elite level. I was thinking of Zancanaro as being also very fast and his career was 34-56-90 as opposed to Zabaneh 16-24-40. I was going to say too that Zabaneh takes a lot of penalties ( career 50m) but I looked up Zanc and he had 153 wow.

Really wish we had taken at least one of the BC regular season games now. We would be in the driver’s seat for the regular season championship and have the #1 PWR. Instead we play almost a meaningless game against Vermont tomorrow. Need to try to be as sharp as possible as we head into the playoffs. I think the team will be very hungry for a Hockey East Championship.

The Hockey East awards are going to be very interesting this year. One might think that Gauthier is a lock for PoY, but when looking at conference games only, it's very tight between him and Macklin. Celebrini actually has one more point that Cutter and Will Smith, and has a bigger lead on points per game. Perreault is actually in second on points per game, behind Macklin. If Cutter gets PoY and Macklin gets RoY, that would mean Will Smith could lead the country in (overall) points and not get either award - which would be very tough. Of course tonight's games could change these numbers. And how about Fowler? (Remember, Cashman beat out Amonte for RoY in 1990). And don't forget the Nadeau brothers who have excelled for Maine. I think the All-Rookie team is going to have 6 forwards on it this year :-)

To me, Macklin deserves to be awarded before any of the three BC freshmen, simply because they have played with each other all season, and they are all going to finish with over 50 points. Macklin's current linemates have 23 points and 10 points. In fact, the next highest forward at BU has 35 points. If there was a true MVP award for the conference, Macklin would win that. The only advantage Macklin has over the BC guys is they don't have a Lane Hutson feeding them pucks.

I could see Gauthier POTY or maybe even co POTY with Hutson. Hutson is having a pretty similar year to last year. Celebrini probably ROTY and then all those guys on the rookie team. I do think Gauthier would be a very deserving choice for POTY if that's how it goes.

I am more intrigued by COTY. Because if the voters are using the same logic they did last year then Greg Brown should win it.

I think Zabaneh and Colby Ambrosio from BC are almost identical players. Ambrosio may have about 20 career points more but he played with Gauthier and Nesterenko last year to account for some of it. They both are almost identical in shots and penalties as well.

You think Hutson is having a similar year? Maybe it’s because Celebrini is on the team, I think he’s having a good year but I don’t really think he’s having as good a year as he had last season. Am I the only one? I could be.

It seems to me as well that Hutson is not having as good a year, but the numbers say otherwise. He is ahead of last year’s pace. He has 12 goals right now vs 15 all of last year. It just doesn’t seem like he’s shooting as much. Again the numbers say it’s about the same as last year. I thought maybe he’s not shooting as much on the PP because the they try to get it to Celebrini, but he has 6 PPG vs 2 last year. The one thing that is a bit different is he is only a +9 this year, last year he ended at +25. I guess he is having a very good year! There are just others in the NCAA that are having comparable or better years as well.

I don't see how Brown isn't the COY unless they really overvalue what Barr did at Maine this year, which would be ridiculous.

The POY race in HE is basically going to mirror the Hobey race. The Hat Trick, unless the voters do something really dumb, should be Macklin, Cutter, and one BC freshman - probably Smith based on point total. Perhaps Blake or Devine sneak in too, but ultimately I think that and the HE POY is a two-horse race between Macklin and Cutter. You can flip a coin there, the stat differences are razor thin.

Two favorite Batesy moments:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1I8E5Cwy18 '95 N/C game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5IoGXb2jBE '02 Stanley Cup penalty shot

I could visualize the entire Bates play in the '95 NC game - right down to Jay stealing the pass at the Maine blue line - before watching it. An all-timer.

I had never seen that '02 penalty shot before. Great stuff.

And finally on Shawn Bates - I'll always remember his game against Denver to go to the FF. (Drury with the OT winner) - He played that game like he had downed a gallon of jet fuel that morning.

Enough of the old-timer talk. Win today. Keep on winning.

BU Hockey: FF or Bust

I kinda thought that scoring a hat trick would mean getting the number one star. I know Macklin had another multi point game but I feel that Quinn should’ve got the number one star over Macklin.

That said, great way to end the regular season!

Woo hoo!!! Maine just beat UMass and probably knocked them out of the tournament. So we don’t have to worry about them being forced to go to Springfield.

They can’t move up with a run in the HE tournament? Assuming not winning it
