BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

A few armchair coach thoughts:

1) Who (if anyone) is the D coach? They shouldn’t be in that role anymore. The D issues look like coaching problems not talent problems
2) Having watched 3 M. Celebrini games now he isn’t in the same class as Eiserman right now and I don’t see how he goes in the first round. He isn’t the problem but seems way overhyped
3) They seem to like skating around in circles in their O-Zone looking for a good pass/shot that never materializes and end up forcing something and losing possession
4) Despite 50 SOG tonight they generally seem like they can’t actually hit the net. So many went high from the dots and led to turnovers instead of rebound opportunities
5) Most embarrassing game/start to a season I have seen from BU in the 30 years I have been watching them. They have had plenty of bad losses but none where I felt like they just didn’t take it seriously like I have this season. I gave them a pass on Bentley after they way they manhandled them last season but 3 games is a trend
6) Bring back Albie! /s

It almost feels like there's no system to the way they're playing, like basic fundamentals of cycling and when a d pinches, no one is there to back them up, the PP just looks like it's a throw the puck out there and do something set up, it's pretty bizarre to watch. I actually really like the hires of Brandvold and Pereira but something isn't working there. Also, word on the street is Ryan Whitney is helping out with the staff too, so who knows

100% agree. My youth hockey playing children said it was like no one taught them the basics of D.

The first round?! I thought this was gonna say #1 overall. Now this is a hot take. It would be a stunning drop for him not to go in the first round.

The comment about whoever is coaching the D isn't doing a good job triggered something in my memory. Did I hear in either Bernie's podcast or during his broadcast of the Bentley game that Kim and Joe swapped roles this season?

When UConn inevitably moves on from Cav after never making an NCAA tournament they should then make a run at Pereira and Whitney can take his spot at BU!

I studied at the Mike Felger school of hot takes. Go big.

Other recruits I can think of that came in with that level of hype and high draft expectations dominated from day one at the college level. He hasn’t.

Hoping the whole team turns this around

You are correct. Kim was interviewed between the 1st and 2nd period last night and he was asked about his new role coaching the D. Why make this change? The team went to the Frozen Four last year with 4 D-men returning.

This team needs to spend the week in a "How to Play Defense" boot camp. Perhaps bdutot's youth hockey playing children are available to run a few sessions.

If I'm reading correctly, that was our first loss against UNH since 2/14/15. That must suck for UNH fans.

Also found it interesting that pregame, Jay said they focused in practice on the breakout, playing faster, and the power play. Nothing about the defense, beyond tightening up in general. Gonna have to be a different focus this week.
Not anymore :-)

Potential last post before I go dark for another 7 years…

The in-game strategy baffles me. It seems to be throw Mack and Lane out as much as humanly possible and have them pass to each other before they collapse from exhaustion. Everyone else just seems to exist to get them the puck.

It seems like there is very little team hockey where everyone is involved on set plays going on.

If Lane always has two bodies on him someone else needs to be able to make the other team pay for that mismatch. Especially since they have Lane and Mack out together there should be mismatches all over the ice.

Hopefully this team has the wake-up call it need. Barely beating Bentley and getting whipped by unh and a bunch of 17 year olds is embarrassing. Stop read their own news clippings and get to work. Talent can only get you so far if you don’t work for it.

Wasn't Kim a dman? And Pereira a forward?

I rode up the elevator from the garage with Ryan Whitney and asked why he was back on campus and he said he was with the coaching staff now. There’s been no info that I’ve seen about it.

Not much more to say about either game this weekend but wanted to mention the goalies. I thought Caron played well on Friday given the lack of defense and he was great at Bentley. Graham had the same lack of defense but I didn’t think he played well.
