BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

Speaking of BU goalies, the Athletic had a recent story about Oettinger. I guess today or tomorrow, he will no longer be exempt from being put on waivers, which pretty much ensures that he will be in the NHL for the rest of his career (unless he hits such a bad stretch that the Stars don't care if someone picks him up). I had not been playing close enough attention to see how well he had been playing, though I saw he was the NHL's third star of the week recently. Great to see. The article quoted Jake talking about how important it was for him to get a third year at BU - he felt much more prepared for the rigors of the AHL.

Oettinger, who has taken over the starting job from Holtby, stopped 20 last night in a 3-2 OT win against Winnipeg. It was his seventh win in his last nine starts, including seven of the Stars' eight games this month. Ex-Stars and Michigan goalie Marty Turco discussed his development in a podcast. https://soundcloud.com/starsnhl

Anyone know if Hockey East could potentially postpone games tomorrow night? Perhaps a Saturday-Sunday series?

They wouldn't postpone this one. It's the shortest drive for the teams! Plus it's supposed to stop, or slow down around 5:00-ish.

I was thinking about fans and dealing with that headache around the arena. But we're used to not having fans now so probably not an issue the league cares about.

Yes, he's been playing very well. In hindsight, it's hard to believe BU didn't make a FF while he was the goalie.

So close in 2017 and 2018, reaching the regional finals. Tough OT loss in ’17 to #3 and eventual finalist Duluth. Still wondering if BU could’ve beaten Michigan in ’18 if Oettinger hadn’t come down with food poisoning.

Huh. I was wrong!! Tonight's game moved to Sunday at 4:00pm.

ETA: Looks like it was moved because the BC Women's game that was scheduled for 1:00pm got moved to 7:00pm.

Hockey East Schedule Update

AMESBURY, Mass. - The Hockey East Association announced today the following schedule update:

Due to inclement weather, the Hockey East Women’s Tournament quarterfinal, Maine at Boston College, scheduled for Friday, February 25, will now begin at 7:00 p.m. The game will air on NESN.

As a result, the Boston University at Boston College men’s game, originally scheduled for Friday, February 25 at 7:00p.m., has been rescheduled for Sunday, February 27, at 4:00 p.m. The game will air on NESN.

Ha, what HE schools do have a 2nd sheet? BC football got a new indoor facility a few years ago and renovations to Conte have been announced for basketball to improve practice facility. Hopefully when that's done they can focus on a hockey specific arena or at least a practice facility. Not easy juggling 4 basketball/hockey teams in one arena and also volleyball who uses the current basketball practice gym which is right in Conte.

Also, the real question is why did the women's game need to be moved? Maine didn't come down here last night?

BU, Merrimack and UMass currently all have two sheets of ice. UConn will once their new on campus ice arena opens.

Sean

NU has exclusive practice rights at the Bruins New Balance Warrior Ice Arena in Brighton. In a pinch they could move a game to that location with limited seating for 700 +/- and would contractually supercede any other team renting the ice other than the Bruins.

Where did Matt Quercia transfer to? And is he still there? The CHN Twitter account does a daily tweet about whose birthday it is and Matt was listed the other day and said he was with BU. So I was wondering if CHN is just woefully understaffed that they don’t check things or if Matt is no longer playing/never played for wherever he transferred to.

He did transfer to Michigan tech. Had 4 points in 14 games. Recently signed with Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL. Something must've happened with the coach because he signed 10 days ago.

Looks like he’s playing at Michigan Tech this year where he has played 14 games with 2 G/2 A. Played regularly in the first semester, but only 1 this semester on Feb 12. I really liked him and thought he was a fairly significant loss. Great role player who I thought could be a real leader this year. Michigan Tech has has a good season, but looks like they will be on the bubble with us right now.

CHN also had Hank Crone listed as BU when his birthday hit recently. So they were a couple schools off on that one.

Looks like Vinny gets the start tonight. I knew he would get consideration. They have played well in front of him. I kind of like the decision. If it doesn’t work out, you can all jump on me after the game.
