BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Well, far be it from me to "defend" Scarlet, but you have to admit that her trepidation is well-founded. In the "early years" (read: before 2000) BU dominated BC. We were leading in National Championships 4-1 and would regularly win the Beanpot and almost any "big" game against them. I remember going to McHugh Fourm more than once when we just smoked them and the BC fans were disgusted (and harrassing us - I'll never forget one woman screaming at me: "At least all our boys are AMERICANS!"). Since the "York" era (particularly since they broke through in Albany), it has flipped in the other direction. The seminal moment was "that game" in Worcester. It's when BC clearly took over the series, IMO. Other than '09, BC has dominated us. Any other spin is denial. THEY have led in NCs 4-1 and have won more Beanpots (not that the Beanpot is the end all - but it's symbolic of the trajectory of the two programs). I remember the days when we KNEW we would beat BC. Always. Remember OC's famous quote in 1978: "We shouldn't have to beat BC for the Nationals - we can do that anytime." Well, not the case anymore.
Regarding the history of the BU-BC series which one has been better has always fluctuated between the two. Back in the late forties and early fifties BU and BC were members of the New England Intercollegiate Hockey League and the league added a postseason tournament in 1948. That season BU was the top team in the league and one of the best in the East, but BC upset them at the end of the regular season and then NU upset them in the NEIHL semifinals. BC won the tournament and was picked to go to the first NCAA tournament while BU sat at home. The next three years (1949-51) BU and BC met in the NEIHL championship with an invite to the NCAA tournament on the line and BC won in 1949 and 1950, before BU finally won in 1951. The NEIHL started to unravel after that, but the Beanpot started and BC dominated BU in that until 1965, going 6-2 overall and 5-0 in championship games. BU took control after that right through the 2007 championship game. BC then retook control until this year, going 6-0 overall and 3-0 in championship games. Oddly, the 2 teams only meet 3 times in 23 years in the ECAC tournament and BU won all three meetings. In the Hockey East tournament the teams have played 12 games in 9 match-ups over 32 years. BU has bested BC in 7 of the 9 match-ups, winning 9 of the 12 games.

It's official. Just announced on the Bruins' game:

UML/ND at 5:00
BU/BC at 8:00

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

What happens to BU in the pairwise if they lose to BC on Friday? I assume BC is out if they lose?

With a loss Friday BC is not necessarily 100% eliminated, but for all intents and purposes they're done.

This spreadsheet from Jim Dahl gives a nice outlook for what PWR probabilities are for each team based on the number of wins they get this weekend: http://collegehockeyranked.com/forecast/pwrtournament/ BU's most likely finish based on all win/loss possibilities this weekend is between 4 and 7.

Also none of the WCHA finalists are anywhere near the top 16, so one bubble team will get knocked out with that auto-bid and perhaps a second with AHA.

Yep, the minimum cut line is 15 and could go even higher if upsets happen. With a loss, BC cannot finish above 15. Also, the spreadsheet I listed is not weighted based on the probability of outcomes occurring. For that kind of thing, CHN has this probability matrix that uses KRACH to incorporate the probabilities of games playing out. http://www.collegehockeynews.com/ratings/probabilityMatrix.php

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team announced:
G: Joseph Woll – Boston College
G: Jake Oettinger – Boston University
D: Andrew Peeke – Notre Dame
F: Ross Colton – Vermont
F: Patrick Grasso – New Hampshire
F: Patrick Harper – Boston University
F: Clayton Keller – Boston University * (unanimous selection)

Does having four forward mean only one defenseman can be named?

Also two goalies so apparently done without regard to position?

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

No outrage over Oettinger not being named Goaltender of the Year? It is only the third time the goalie with the best league GAA has not won the award (and some places the league still mentions it is for the best GAA in league play) and the second time it has happened to a BU goalie. I thought it was likely to happen, but expected Petersen to be named the winner. In my opinion Delia was the least deserving of the three.

Could Peterson still get 1st team All-HE, and Oettinger 2nd team? Because that is what I was thinking would happen.

I am a little surprised that Woll tied Oettinger (or somehow shared the All-Rookie honors). Some folks in Plymouth, MI are proud no doubt.

When was that released? Don't see it on the league site.
