BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

I notice they call it "Goaltending Champion". interesting way of phrasing it. i thought it was separate from goalie of the year but looking at last year's awards, there was only a goaltending champion. thought it was purely stat based but Delia and Oettinger aren't 1-2 in GAA or SP. Delia does seem like an odd choice. Petersen would have been my choice.

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Isn't the goaltending "champion" simply given to the goalie with the highest save percentage in league games?

They've adopted the British Open style of announcing rewards: "The Champion Goaltender of the year is: ____ " :D

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Regarding the history of the BU-BC series which one has been better has always fluctuated between the two.

So I've actually been meaning to ask you (I don't have "formal ties" to the program so I don't really know more than a couple of people on the board personally). Are you related to the famous company that used to manufacture slide rules? Not such an outlandish question actually when you consider your propensity for statistics.

My Dad taught me how to use his Pickett slide rule when I was young (yes, I know I'm REALLY dating myself here...this was WAY before electronic calculators...in fact, the slide rule emerged right after the abacus) :)

If that is the case, then yeah, Delia wins. But I definitely don't see how Oettinger isn't the first team goalie. He is better than Peterson in every stat except for being tied in save %. I also don't think he should've had to share the spot with Woll on the All-Rookie team since he is measurably better than Woll in every statistical category.

The only "category" that matters will be Friday night...

I thought it was stat based but wasn't oettinger listed as runner up? Don't think those guys finished 1-2, thought there was someone else in there.

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

For basic stats, save percentage is what to look at, not GAA. i give the nod to petersen for an edge in minutes played...splitting hairs though.

From the start of Hockey East until 2009 the Goaltender Champion was awarded to the goalie with the lowest GAA in league games. In 2009 they changed the criteria because Kieran Millan had the lowest GAA, but Brad Thiessen was named the league MVP and I guess some people handling the awards thought it would be awkward if Millian won. As Thiessen did have the highest save percentage it wasn't much of a change, but one that came without notice. Since then the league has snubbed the GAA leader only 2 additional times: 2010 when Carter Hutton (UML) won the award despite Parker Milner (BC) having the lowest GAA and highest save percentage and this year. The common denominator in all 3 cases is the snubbed goalie was a freshman. Only 2 other freshman have had the lowest GAA: Scott King (ME) in 1987 and Derek Herlofsky (BU) in 1992 (both won the award).

In league games Oettinger is the GAA leader, with a 2.09, vs Petersen's 2.15 and Delia's 2.21.

In save percentage Delia is the leader with a 0.92774 vs Adam Huska's 0.92769, Peterson's 0.92724 and Oettinger's 0.92670. So Delia had the best save percentage by 0.00005 over Huska, 0.0005 over Petersen and 0.001 over Oettinger. Those are razor thin leads and when combined with GAA average Delia clearly should be third, without even taking into account Delia played over 470 minutes less than Petersen and over 363 minutes less than Oettinger.

Not to my knowledge, and as a genealogist I can definitely say none of my Pickett ancestors had anything to do with math until my grandfather. I do have my father's slide rule somewhere, but I have no idea who made it, or how to use it.

Thanks...just thought I'd chance it! :)

I agree that Delia shouldn't win. should be petersen or oettinger but GAA has more to do with the team in front of you. at the same time even save percentage can be deceiving because what if you are facing higher quality chances because you have a weaker team in front of you (i am sure there are advanced stats for that somewhere).

Sure, you're right about the use of stats but if you then incorporate the "eye test" that still would likely leave you with the same two standout candidates being argued here in Oettinger and Petersen. I believe Huska isn't considered because of minutes played, while Delia clearly did meet the minutes played threshold. It's a relatively meaningless award and Delia certainly had a great season and performed remarkably against BU in the two we played.

The Delia pick is a head-scratcher (and I'm an MC guy). He was hurt for a good portion of the beginning of the year, and came on very strong for an 8 game undefeated streak late in the season. But he didn't play nearly the minutes of the others. I'd agree, I'd have him 3rd behind Oettinger and Peterson (and Wall was no slouch either!)

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Given all the additional info, I feel confident that Petersen will get first team and Oettinger will get second team.
