BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

I agree that Delia shouldn't win. should be petersen or oettinger but GAA has more to do with the team in front of you. at the same time even save percentage can be deceiving because what if you are facing higher quality chances because you have a weaker team in front of you (i am sure there are advanced stats for that somewhere).
I haven't seen any such stats online, but the shots sheets for each period do show where every shot was taken from on the ice. Using those you could determine how many shots and goals were from in close, the sides, the blue line, outside the blue line, etc. and create the advanced stats you are referring to.

Sure, you're right about the use of stats but if you then incorporate the "eye test" that still would likely leave you with the same two standout candidates being argued here in Oettinger and Petersen. I believe Huska isn't considered because of minutes played, while Delia clearly did meet the minutes played threshold. It's a relatively meaningless award and Delia certainly had a great season and performed remarkably against BU in the two we played.
Huska did meet the minutes played threshold (he played almost 35 minutes more than Delia). Also, do you consider the league scoring leader title also relatively meaningless?

Given all the additional info, I feel confident that Petersen will get first team and Oettinger will get second team.
There are a few other stats that I think are important, including wins, shutouts and winning percentage, but as they are even more impacted by team play they are harder to quantify when comparing goalies. That said I would vote for Oettinger on the first team and Petersen on the second team, but I'm sure part of that is my bias.

In my opinion Delia got the Goaltender award because of the "everyone gets a participation medal" mentality. I truly think that the league wants to spread around the honors as much as possible and this was one of the few honors that could go to a Merrimack player this year.

Does anyone know what sections we have for tomorrow night, both in the balcony and downstairs? Thanks.

J.D., if you can get this done and share your analysis by 5pm tomorrow that would be great. :p

I know mine are in 13 so it will be that area of arena. I think they allocate on the side sections as opposed to ends like they do for Beanpot. I think ends are sold in general sale but haven't looked.

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Has anyone else take a look at the tickets available for this weekend? Holy cow....

The semis got 13k and finals 14k last year. Unless there is tremendous walk up traffic, we won't get close to that this weekend. Maybe there is a lot of walk up traffic trying to avoid the ticketmaster fees, but the number of tickets available is worse than usual especially considering 3 of the schools involved.

I know, I'm torn between paying $20 for the balcony or center ice on the glass for $45.

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

If anyone is interested I will have two fantastic seats - center ice 6 rows up for cheap. Unfortunately I dont think I can make the game now. Contact me if interested.

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

To the guys contemplating paying $20 or $45 just pay $20 and sit in emtpty seats in the loge for both games I did that last year and have done it many years the ushers at the garden don't check usually

Yeah, I ended up buying balcony tickets. Of course after the ticketmaster fees .... It was $13.40 per ticket plus $4.50 for an order processing fee. Ridiculous. Did you have to pay fees through Agganis? Maybe I did this wrong but didn't really decide until today that I was definitely going.

No fees when purchasing through Agganis.

No fees, but the face value was $25 per game and they make you buy both nights.

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

ND certainly doesn't help attendance. Glory days were the old big 4 routinely getting to the garden. UNH and Maine always brought a lot of fans. Getting ND out next year could help, depending on who makes it. Other than that, i think attendance is down in general across the sport.

Agreed. UNH and Maine would bring 8,000 between them. That's a huge chunk missing. But even when UNH was there in 2015 they didn't bring nearly as many. This is why discussions have been going on regarding attendance in several other threads. To me, it's inexplicable to continue to argue that it's because of "spring break" and some of the other inane "excuses." Popularity has waned, period. For whatever reason, that's debatable, but there is NO QUESTION that interest is declining.

To the UNH in 2015 point, interest in general in the UNH program has waned, and they had a relatively poor 2015 season and sort of backdoored their way into the semis so there wasn't much interest from the fans there. There's also something to be said for the cost to attend these games, from Ticketmaster fees, parking prices, concession prices, etc. that go beyond the face value of the ticket. I think some BU and BC fans are a bit worn out of playing one another and the games aren't "special", of course ND has difficulty drawing here, and while UML has a growing fanbase many of those who attend their games are youth hockey groups, families from the area, and/or locals who may not want to make the trip into Boston at much higher of a cost than a game at Tsongas - much less for a 5 pm game on a Friday.

That said, I'd bet if Maine made their way to the Garden half of the state of Maine would still make their way down.

Agreed. And that's why I said I didn't want to speculate on WHY (because that's a discussion that would go on forever). I'm just looking at the facts.

It's amazing, though, that even though costs for the fans continue to go up, the powers that be are seemingly oblivious to the fact that eventually this will hurt attendance, which ultimately inflicts long-term damage to the sport. But, not to worry, for as long as they get their advertising revenue, they don't care. Short-sighted. What have you done for me lately. Immediate gratification. Sad.

I have another commitment tomorrow night, but I probably wouldn't have gone both nights anyway. But I'll be there Saturday. :D

Oh, but UML has a big fan base that travels. Isn't that why they're going to be staying east and BU will go to Fargo? That's what they keep saying. 5pm games in Boston on a Friday? Shouldn't matter!! :)

I think a big factor in lower attendance in general is the fact that so many games are available for "free" on TV, with the rise of regional sports channels, as well as internet streaming. I know I'd be watching for free from my couch if tomorrow wasn't St Patty's Day and I'm going with a bunch of friends and we have plans for afterwards.

It shouldn't. Put in for vacation time. Be sick. Whatever. It only happens once a year so you do what you have to do to be in Boston on this Friday every year. Should be circled on your calendar for whatever team you're a fan of and you get there. No excuses.
