BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Who seriously scalps- legalized or not - college hockey games when they are not even close to selling out? Not a knock at your point, just a general rant. Saw a couple last weekend in front of Agganis when the arena was not even half sold. Surely, there will be scalpers tomorrow night with thousands of tickets for sale.

Ticketmaster sucks and it sucks even more that Agganis is in bed with them. That alone is a benefit for season tickets. For this weekend, I know people want their tix in advance, but you don't have to pay TM fees at the ticket window. Plus ST holders buying through BU weren't charged fees and got slightly discounted tickets.

Food & drink at Agganis are expensive. Food & drink at the Garden is outrageous.

Agreed about the parking. Thank god for Uber and commuter rail. I'll be drinking and it actually costs less not to drive. One good thing at least.

Yeah, I threw in the Ace/Stub Hub more from an overall sports fandom rant than college hockey specifically. I am fine with a marketplace where fans can unload tickets for a small fee, but these outfits shouldn't be allowed to buy the tickets in order to resell them, often at a markup. Ace even advertises that they "own" their tickets.

As I pulled out of my street on the way to work this morning, I somehow got behind a car with a license plate frame and sticker from the York Kia of Medford dealership. I'm taking that as a bad omen........

Somebody please explain something to me before my head explodes.

Whoa...give us a fair warning before that happens. You've got a big head, dude. That's going to leave quite a mess...

The Hockey East semifinals and championship have been available on a local regional sports channel since the league started, so that should not be much of a factor in attendance changes.

Sean

Right, I wasn't referring specifically to this weekend's games. I was referring to attendance in general being down.

And that attendance slump can be spread to nearly all live sports, pro and college. More people don't want to deal with the headache/cost associated with going to an event when they can watch in HD at home.

Re: BU 2017 Season Thread II: Terriers rising

Right, I wasn't referring specifically to this weekend's games. I was referring to attendance in general being down.
Based on raw numbers:

Since last season:
23 teams' average attendance has increased
37 teams' average attendance has decreased

since the 2012-13 season:
22 teams' average attendance has increased
37 teams' average attendance has decreased

since the 2000-01 season:
29 teams' average has increased
27 teams' average has decreased

On the negative side 6 teams had their lowest average attendance since 2001 and another 3 had their lowest average attendance since opening new arenas. On the other hand, 2 teams had their lowest average attendance sine 2001 last season and 3 had their lowest attendance since since opening new arenas, but all 5 had increased average attendance this season. Six teams also had their highest average attendance since 2001 last season and while all fell off those averages they had healthy averages this season.

Of course, attendance is much more complicated than that. For example, I'm working on attendance of league games vs non-league games for Hockey East teams. I only have the past three seasons so far, but team attendance averages for league games are almost always higher than team attendance averages for non-league games. Since Hockey East went from a 27 game league schedule to a 20, then 22, game league schedule it stands to reason that overall average attendance would drop for Hockey East teams as they lost 3 or 4 league games in 2013-14 and 2 or 3 league games each of the past 3 seasons. And, of course the most obvious factor is how a team has done, both in past seasons and the current season.

Furthermore, I've made no effort to compare college hockey attendance to professional sports or other college sports attendance to see if there is a correlation between them.

I know, I'm torn between paying $20 for the balcony or center ice on the glass for $45.

when they have these doubleheaders you should ALWAYS buy the cheapest seat. Even during a sellout which they wont even be close to (sad) not all the people are in the building at the same time. Last two Beanpots, I bisected center ice line, second row and first row on balcony. Better than Johnny Most's seat :-)

ND trailing by four and doesn't even have a shot on net six minutes into the period. I'm sitting there n the end where UML is shooting . Looks like the entire game has been down here all night!

Time to step up Terriers! Gonna have to if you want to beat Lowell (I know...one at a time but that was scary)

Do you have advice for the "cheapest parking garage" too? Lol. $45 parking... $15 ticket fees...food. Good thing I'm still working! :)

Yes I know. But I didn't know BEFORE the game that it wouldn't go into OT. I've been stuck walking three times because the T stopped running (remember we usually get the 2nd game). :).
