BU 2015 Offseason Thread-To quote The Clash - Should he stay or should he go?

Based on the feedback in this forum as well as talking to a few few season tix holders about this, I'm not sure if the desired results (+ attendance) will be met. There's one game that the 4pm start might affect my ability to go, but my gut feeling is next season we'll either see a return to almost all 7pm starts, or they spread out the 4pm starts instead of front-loading them in the 1st semester.

Ill be interested to see. I agree a couple of more of these during the true winter months may have been preferred, but I think it's worth a try.

I'd say the idea of 4PM games were received favorably among the few few season ticket holders I have personally spoken with.

There is no doubt that a 4:00 PM game is better for families and youth groups. If that results in better attendance, that remains to be seen.

Yeah, I think we're in the vacuum of USCHO-BU Hockey negativity. I don't think any effigies of Harry Agganis will be burned in the concourse because of this. People will have to gasp plan around BU hockey

Well, isn't that the point? The change to 4pm is to presumably increase attendance. The more people that have to "plan around" BU hockey increases the likelihood that those people will choose to not attend the game, contradicting the goal of increased attendance.

When I was in school, I actually had to study believe it or not since I got a real degree and not one from CGS/MET. ;). Saturday afternoon was a good time to do group meetings, etc. I'm real curious what this does to the student section. Aside from old people who are up at 3AM (Maury Seinfeld) and go to bed at 7 PM, I fail to see who this benefits. As Mookie pointed out, the so-called Halloween benefit is ludicrous. You're supposed to go to a game until 7, rush home to wherever you live (I'm guessing not next door to the arena), get your kids dressed, THEN take them out? Its freakin 9 o'clock at that point. S-T-U-P-I-D on multiple levels. BU could end up being the only school in history with a drop in attendance after a championship runner up season.

If they thought this was such a swell idea, one has to wonder why it wasn't announced BEFORE season ticket orders were due....

I’d imagine the 4 p.m. starts are an experiment aimed at boosting attendance. I’ve heard from people who are pleased and others who are not—for reasons already posted. The chief benefit would seem to be for parents with younger children who’d like to take them to quality hockey at a far lower cost than the Bruins, and still have an evening to go out themselves. Plenty of fans gather for a pre-game meal before BU home game; the Cantina is always packed. I wouldn’t mind changing it up a few times and going for a post-game dinner in another part of town. BU will have to widely and heavily promote the 4 p.m. games (traditional and social media) if the experiment is to have any success.

It’s not surprising that most of the early games are front-loaded on the schedule, rather than in February when late season fatigue is more of a factor. I’m also guessing the OOC games vs. Denver and Michigan games were selected to give BU an added edge in the Saturday games. Both team will be flying into town on Thursday or Friday. And DU plays at BC the night before the Halloween matinee at BU.

And how many of these people are STH?

Well, I'm at the perfect age group for this... but pretty much every season ticket holder that is in my closer circle of friends is in this category. For those of us in this category, we often only use one of our tickets on Friday nights (and skip bringing kids to the games because they run so late, especially with the 7:30 PM start)

There will be people who like this, and others who dislike it. Personally I like it.

For what it is worth, the early start games we had last year, drew pretty well (hard to know what would have happened had the games been at 7:00, but as a minimum it looks as though attendance was not negatively affected). Last year Acadia and Colgate were at 4:00 on Saturday and UMass Lowell was a 2:00 PM Sunday. Then we were at UNH for 4:00 PM on a Sunday.

Almost 7,400 in attendance for the BU soccer game last night. Pretty impressive. Hopefully the sports marketing team did some things for that game that can translate to hockey games.

did they start at 4p?

:D

I'm sorry but BU attendance is sub-par considering the program had a once in a generation player and was destined for the NCAA's as the season rolled along. As far as tickets sold goes a lot of people showed up dressed as empty seats. Spare me the indifferent student population schtick. There's enough students plus alums & their families to fill a mid sized arena.

Re: BU 2015 Offseason Thread-To quote The Clash - Should he stay or should he go?

mookie also can't help but laugh at this need for "family friendly times". tyler was born in oct and was at a game as a 'weeks' year old. never a problem bringing in 3 kids at a time, one even had a jump seat where his car seat was brought in and tied down in wba then haa.

So they should try something different from last year to try to boost attendance?

I also have to believe the snow / traffic had a negative impact towards the end of the season.

This all goes back to my original question, they're worried about ticket sales for Michigan and Providence? Not to mention DU and UNH. If that's the case, we've got much bigger problems.

YES, like DROPPING Prices. What a novel concept, but even the cheap @ ss Bruins did that once when they noticed half the stands empty.

You seem to be a "Thank You Sir May I Have Another" kinda fan, which is fine. However, the lack of fans proves my point despite the presense of Eichel, college hockey's best player since Kariya, a team that was a scoring machine, and pretty much lined up for a FF appearance. Changing the starting time is idiotic. Its whip cream on sh !t. Stop screwing fans with $25 prices for a single ticket, charging 12 bucks to park on campus despite having a ticket to the game, and 8 bucks for a beer. A college hockey contest vs Merrimac or UConn shouldn't cost a family a 100 bucks to attend.

Amen, brother. I've said it before. I have two boys that would love to go to 4-5 games per year with me. I wind up taking them each once, and I get to a couple others on my own. The sole reason we don't go to more is the cost. I live in the North Shore area, so I'm going to be more focused on getting to the away games at UML, MC, and perhaps UNH.

I've advocated for lower pricing on these boards for some time. They have tried some discounted tickets etc and maybe need to do more. You seem like the chronic malcontent type of fan though so I'm not sure they could do anything that would please you.

I've spoken with a number of other ticket holders now and (other than comments on this board) I have not heard one negative reaction to the 4:00PM games.
