BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

Re: BU 2013 Offseason Thread - Bring on the Mighty Quinn

About Lowell. I'm happy for the program and what they've accomplished, but sometimes those "Defense 1st + Great Goalie" teams have a setback the next year. Not saying they won't be good, but their rivals are going to have a year's experience under their belts trying to figure them out, and for BU's sake the inexplicable coaching decision to try to out defense them in last year's playoffs will mercifully not be repeated (I hope).

Again, happy for Lowell but happier they didn't win it all last year. Had they done so we'd be subject to butt-boring hockey for the next decade as every coach in the league strove to emulate their style of play.

Lowell is a really boring team to watch. That's not to say that they haven't been really good the last two seasons, because they have. But it is dreadful to watch, unless you are a Lowell fan.
I'm sure they won't care if they bore the rest of us to death, as long as they win.

Goaltending is a huge key for Lowell, Give up the first goal or two, and make them come out of their game. If they score first, they are putting on the clampers and the rest of us to sleep.

It's actually a compliment. Lowell is under no obligation to be entertaining.

Agreed. You play to your strengths which is a sign of good coaching. If I'm coaching against them, I go balls to the wall in period 1 to try and score the first goal, then force them to play catch up hockey. That killed them in the NCAA's this year as they were gassed by the start of the 3rd period and got outshot like 100 to 1 from then on. I liked the way Yale won last year. They took it to people which I'd like to see BU try to do more this year now that the constipated offensive system is hopefully in the circular filing cabinet.

Is going balls to the wall to take it to the opponent going to be to the strenghts of our crop of forwards this coming year? I don't really know the answer, and I may be wrong, but my guess would be no....

I hope I'm wrong because that is much more entertaining hockey to watch.

Maybe with that top line of ours. I wouldn't think a school like the Helen Keller School for the Blind would be able to generate enough offense for a plan like this, but BU needs to crank up the offense and not play on their heels. I think the team does have that kind of talent. I've often speculated that the former coaching staff's insistence that everybody play like a 4th line checking forward stunted a lot of player development over the years.

Interestingly, I heard from a BU guy I know that is in a lot of rinks in the S. Shore that one particular NHL player bolted from Parker/BU for this very reason (according to his source, a family member of the former Terrier now in the NHL). Couldn't stand the garbage system they were making him play. He's done well for himself since that time.

Pretty obvious you're talking about Charlie Coyle.

Can only comment on two games at North Dakota last season but BU transitioned well and created a lot of good scoring opportunities with speed and skill.

I agree our top line should be quite good... after that I'm not so sure... of course a lot of it will depend on how the freshman step into the NCAA level of play.

Edit: Speaking of Freshman... does anyone know anything about this "walk on forward from Toronto"... Dillon Lawrence? Have not heard much about him... maybe for good reason... who knows?

I think the play of the sophomore class will be at least as important as the incoming freshmen. Lane, Kurker, and the two goalies need to step up their game. O'Connor and Maguire both had good stretches/games, but they really need consistency as there were some games where each looked like upper tier goalies, but other games where it looked like they just took up the position. Obviously you can't expect everyone in a recruiting class to be highly productive (unless you're BC apparently), but Lane and Kurker were expected to contribute almost right away. Instead they combined for 12 points on the season (while both playing almost every game) and were a combined -16 (Kurker at -10 was the worst on the team and Lane was next with -6). I'd like to say I saw some promise, but for the most part both looked pretty lost (Kurker especially). Lane did start to pick it up towards the end, but I think they'll need to each have at least 15-20 point seasons this year. If they don't then these incoming freshmen forwards better be really good or BU might be looking at a 2.5 goals per game type of season. And unless O'Connor and Maguire make some type of huge jump, that would be problematic. Of course with a new coach and a new style of play, who knows how their offense will look. Should be interesting.

Kurker were expected to contribute almost right away.

I wouldn't say that is entirely true since BU wanted Kurker to start this year not last. They (correctly) thought he needed a year in juniors. I think the speed of the college game took Kurker off guard and his play suffered. It will be interesting to see how he does this year.

You hit on something important with the BC comment. Jerry York puts those guys into a position to get the most of their skills. Yes, the school brings in talent, but so does BU and a lot of other places. My problem with BU previously was everybody was supposed to play the same type of game, unless you were a ridiculous talent like Drury or Wilson. Some players were busts (Sabo) but others could have had better careers had they been allowed to crash the net and push the offense a little more instead of cycling the puck to the blue line and having the d-man throw it on net in the hopes it bounced in (usually with no Terrier within a mile of the front of the net).

Bingo!

When I think of going all out in the first period, to me it is as much the first line getting great scoring opportunities as it is the 4th line banging bodies on a relentless forecheck. Both of those approaches should be able to work on the same team, not all players should have to play one style. In BU's better seasons, my memories include those third and fourth lines putting the effort and periodically getting rewarded with goals, creating some balance - think Jon Pratt, Doug Friedman, and Matt Wright. The list of players that can really bang AND really score is a short one (Keith Tkachuk and Mike Grier come to mind), so let each guy play to his strengths. That doesn't mean the scorers can get away without back checking like Ovechkin or Kevin Roy, but they have to be able to have the freedon to try to use their gifts.

I really think we are going to see more skill showing out on the ice than we have in the past, in a relative sense.

Roy and OV should never be mentioned in the same sentence lol

But yes, the top two lines needs to be defensibly responsible.

Lowell v ND might be the first game where no one crosses the red line
