BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

So, it sounds as if Charlie Coyle will sit out tonight.

Also seems like Nicastro could, he was downright awful last night. Did anyone even notice Kevin Gilroy on the ice? If I didn't know beforehand that he was playing, I'd never have guessed.

By the way, I'm a fan of David Quinn, but based upon the timing, weren't Nicastro and Escobedo recruited during his tenure?

The problem with Nicastro is not that he was recruited at all. He showed flashes of talent in his freshman year, but he came to BU to develop. That's something that hasn't happened. In my opinion, he has regressed during his time here. I think it's more of a reflection on the coaching staff at BU now than it is on the guy who recruited Nicastro. It's their job to make him a better player.

VERY risky. Millan, Nieto, and Gill played very well though.

Nieto was BU's best player last night. Coyle and Gill also played well. Coyle made a nice play on puck behind UMASS net to get puck to Nieto who sent it in front to create Gill's goal. Other lines need to pick it up tonight, especially Trivino's line. The D really needs to step it up. Nicastro made a terrible decision to send the puck across ice in BU defensive zone just before second UMASS goal. If Privitera is back in line-up, I wouldn't be surprised to see #7 not in uniform tonight, with #21 the other possibility. Clendening makes a great play keeping puck in UMASS zone and then takes a crazy turnaround pass/shot that results in a turnover. Escobedo got jobbed on embellishment call but then takes a boneheaded cross check penalty.

Still looking for a complete effort in response to Pereira's comments earlier this week. How about a sense of urgency tonight?

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

i watched most of the game last night, tried to balance with listening to the BC game..

i thought it was obivious that umass had no answer for coyle/neito line..i couldnt tell who the third forward was, i thought it was chiasson to start, but seemed to be gill toward the finish. though they didnt generate too much quality chances because they seemed content to cycle and bang around umass down low. overall, i was not impressed with bu's motor. umass was all over them territorily but obviously didnt have the horses to compete skill wise. clearly umass did most of their threatening on the multiple power plays

gill and rodrigues were pretty flashy with the puck, alot of puck skills with those two. neito is much more of a goal scorer and really doesnt impress in other areas - reminds me of boomer ewing.

i didnt even know trivino played.. didnt see him or hear his name called at all.

macgregor and noonan are probably the only good defenders on that team.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

Nope. Chiasson grabs some pine. I believe he had two posts last night, but was he not doing the job defensively?

Rodrigues moves to the first line and Hohmann is back on the third line. Rollie in.
OK, raise your hand if you expected no changes on D. .... That's what I thought.

Boston hockey blog had a quote from parker about having to sit guys out tonight for dumb play last night. It was referring to coyle's turnover in OT.

Nieto said they aren't worried and know what needs to be done, but can/will they do it?

I'm sorry if that's how the quote came across, but he wasn't necessarily talking about Coyle there. He meant there were multiple star players who didn't give a good effort last night and some will be benched. He singled out the Coyle line as the only line he liked (and yes, he did move Chiasson off it toward the end) so I'd be surprised if Coyle sits tonight. I'd doubt that he'd have the guts to sit Chiasson, but if he does, props to him. Chiasson did not play well last night. I would hope he benches Escobedo. On Thursday, he said the next player to take a stupid penalty more than once would be benched. Escobedo took two cross-checking penalties Friday.

I'll be at Agganis soon and will get the lineups up as soon as possible. I'll probably tweet the lineups first if anyone significant is benched.

Re: BU 2011-2012 Season: The bar is low, boys!

That says it all when it comes to Jack. Stubborn, unyielding and unwilling to change.

HE KNOWS what people are saying here and HE KNOWS we've been on his case for quite some time.

You are absolutely correct that he will leave when he wants to, but if he drags this out for another 3-4 years and this team plays at this level for another 3-4 years, he will leave a very bad feeling with us oldtimers when it comes to remembering his legacy. At least Ron Mason had MSU competing in a few FFs his last few years, but being compared to Joe Paterno is NOT a good thing. Its pathetic.

How many more times can you go back to that game vs Michigan to remember when Jack had his team ready to win a BIG game??? That was FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.

I don't think my liver can take another 3-4 years of reading Parker quotations about why the team was not ready to play tonight against Providence or UMASS or UML.

You guys are right on target. The sad thing is that Jack is more concerned about himself then the BU program. I've said before that in my opinion the biggest issue this team faces is a coach that sees the program as all about him. I think that translates into much of the "me first" attitude of the players. Most are selfish on campus, disrespectful of the student body and could care less about the university. Jack cares about himself first, treats the players like meat, makes deals with agents to play certain kids regardless of work ethic or performance, does not reward team first hard working players and in the end you see the results. I don't think that is how its always been but it is the way the program has evolved the last ten years.

Compare that to Jerry York at BC and you see the difference in results.

People get on Parker for getting on players to take responsibility.
Isn't that what Nicastro should be doing?
How about some of the others that haven't lived up to expectations?
Maybe they were overrated? Maybe they don't have what it takes?
Sure, we need to look at the recruiting and the coaching.

Just because Parker doesn't give the players a pass, doesn't mean that we should, either.

Nicastro has size and physical ability, but makes too many bad decisions.
Clendening has plenty of ability, but also coughs up the puck far too frequently without pressure because he loses concentration or doesn't pay enough attention.
Maybe they are ADHD?

There is what we can see, and there is also so much that we don't know.
