Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

FYI, at the luncheon today Coach Kyle stated that both Gustafson and Butcher are out with the flu. Coach said that Gussy had the swine flu and that Mark Olver is his roomate...Mark is o.k. for now. :(
dammit! time to adjust fantasy rosters....:p

What I took away from this game is that both teams were very closely matched. Neither team played an inspiring game. Big game tomorrow for both teams. For Northern, I think this is where we find out what kind of team we have this season.

It was neat to see Hats actually get ice time tonight. Too bad it took zebra stripes to make that happen...

With Gustaffson, Butcher and probably Hanson now out with a bad thigh bruise, I doubt tomorrow's game would be a good gauge for the season.

I personally thought Florek was great tonight. With his size, if he can keep up that effort all year he could be special.

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

The only thing that I have to say to this is... Who would you consider to be our star-caliber players of the recent past (honestly curious, I'm not trying to start crap)? I would say Mike Santorelli and Darin Olver, on the forward side. Toward the end of their playing careers at NMU, both were very good offensively but horrible team players. I really hated watching that. That talent took Santorelli somewhere, but look where Olver ended up.

I like the talent of the younger Olver, but I really hate watching him play. He doesn't pass and it really makes me angry.

I think that Santorelli and Oystrick were our two most recent star players. Tarkki was pretty much a stud goalie, but that is getting to be a while ago now. I don't think Olver really was a star player, he is one of those players who showed the ability but never became a true star. Look at Olver's stats his junior and senior year, they are good, but they don't say "star".

Currently, I think that Gustafson is a star player. Several other players on this team have the potential to be a star player. Cherniwichan (i'm too lazy to look up the spelling) has a lot of potential in my eyes, as does Florek. Whether those two will develop remains to be seen, but I think they both have strong futures.

edit: in regards to Mark Olver, I think he also has potential to be a special player, but as you said he needs to learn to be a team player and pass the puck off. There were so many times last year where I would watch him twist and turn through traffic only to turn the puck over, all while he had a teammate open for a pass. It frustrated the hell out of me, and my high school coach would have murdered me for holding the puck like that

So on Chewy's CFB, it came across on the radio that it was just a dumb play....

For those of you that saw it, did he just have a bad shift and let frustration get the better of him? He's a player that I really like and expect good things from this year... I'm just kinda surprised since he seems to be one of the more level headed players out there..

I actually thought he was playing very well before the penalty. I was (not surprisingly if you look at previous posts) really surprised they called a major on it, I don't have replay or anything, but I didn't think he even checked him from behind, I thought it was more of an errant elbow if anything.

Florek and Smith both played very well, with Smith flying around checking the crap out of anything near a wall, and Florek being the really smart forward who is always back on defense. McCoulay and Spady also really stepped up on defense, McCoulay had a great steal on a play that could have easily been a goal. I hope the Cat's pull out a W tonight, they really dominated after the first period last night, save a bad penalty, and good last second play by BSU.

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

Why no shootout? Look at it this way. It would be 100% meaningless. Anyone care to risk your #1 goalie pulling a groin for a totally meaningless display?

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

Cherniwchan's check was from behind, but as usual, not as bad as the major would suggest. This has more to do with the manner in which our beloved officials approach the penalty call than to what actually happens on the play. As a side note: all game long last night, our friends withe the orange arm bands continuously called penalties that did not match the infraction. (contact to the head penalties when the contact was no higher than the other players chest) I began to wonder if the calls were simply drawn from a hat. Of course this is only my opinion.

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

That makes sense I guess. Even if we'd had won, it still would have been a tie in our overall standings correct?

Is stewie getting the go again tonight?

I couldn't agree more. I try not to complain about penalties on here because everyone chews my *** and gives me crap (although I am a referee). Hopefully the Cats step up big tonight.

tarkki was only a year older than oystrick. i'm not sure how one can be considered "recent" and the other is "a while ago". secondly, while i completely agree that tarkki was a great goalie for nmu, he only really played one year. his other three he spent stuck backing kolwalski. i'd hesitate to put him in that "star player" category because of that
