Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

Well, looks like I'll be watching the games on the b2 network, as I just hooked the TV up to my computer (thanks Millsy!). Thank god my wife's (anyone there live around Arnold or Gwinn? That's where she grew up - going to the one room elementry school at KI Sawyer) as excited about this series as I am...

I work (sort of) in Gwinn--I'm a sub for the high school.

It will be a good series. :)

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

I think it's really likely that this series will set the tone for the first half of this season. If we come out of this series with a sweep, I think we stand a fair chance of possibly getting two from Miami. If we don't play so well, then we won't fair well against Miami who's playing lights out so far this season. This should be a fun series!

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

I'm looking forward to catching my first NMU action of the season this weekend. Admittedly I was distraught after the Tech loss but really liked the way the Wildcats bounced back against Duluth. I hope the same Cats' come out fighting and clawing this weekend.

My expectations once again are great and hopefully they will come to fruition this season. Billy Blanks got it right when he states it has been a long 10 years since our last entry into the NCAA's. I too grow tired of returning to The Joe for our "end of season party"!!!

My heart tells me that NMU will sweep this weekend but my head knows that too many things can factor into the equation. Things like, penalties, special teams play, and of course stand on their head goalie efforts are enough to swing the series.

On paper NMU should sweep at home and will if the players can compete for 60 minutes and capitalize on chances. This will set the stage for what could be a magical Halloween weekend series against Miami when the nation will be made aware that NMU HAS ARRIVED and all SHOULD BE VERY SCARED!!!

I was just telling the story of the last NCAA trip, and how I was watching the game vs. BC on TV, ready to board a bus the next day for Madison if NMU won to catch the game vs. UND to get to the Frozen Four, and when Brian Gionta scored the eventual winner, I threw my hat at the TV... :o

I don't know if you can really call either team a "favorite" on paper. Sure, NMU's at home, and I know about Gustafsson and Olver and Stewart (who struggled vs. Tech) being the studs, but, "on paper," BSU counters with Read (CHA Pre-season POTY) to counter Olver, Hunt (top returning defenseman and what coach Serratore has been quoted as saying is the top player in BSU history - not bad for a progran that has produced Joel Otto), and a solid young, although unproven, goalie, in soph. Bakala (sure, he's only got 2 varsity starts, but in his 3 exhibition starts last year vs. the US under-18 team (no slouches) and Manitoba, he posted a GAA of 1.00 and a sv% of .951) - plus he got two wins over Air Force in his first varsity action.

Maybe that means you give the home team the sweep on the two teams being fairly even, but to say one or the other should sweep "on paper?" Personally, I'm rooting for two ties.

Last night Walt said Billy Smith's wrist is good to go and should play this weekend.

I'm a newbie on this site. Was referred by a hockey officianoto who said this site was interesting. Okay it's cool to read the commentaries.
I think MOJO has wisdom and I agree with his comments. I wonder though did anyone else notice the Mike Maltese factor? Missing against Tech and returned to the lineup against UMD? 2assists on three goals against UMD. I think he is part of the solution. Hope we have a good weekend against BMU. Exciting weekends ahead.

Now that you mention it, I actually didn't even know he was out vs. MTU. Hopefully he can be a big factor for the Cats this season.

Welcome to the board. Whatever you do, don't mention anything about Firing Walt Kyle. You'll get a ton of red chicklets for expressing your opinion.
Especially if you aren't in the majority of opinions with the rest of the NMU fans.

Welcome aboard. First off, look out for the grammar police and do not ever mention a Big Ten Conference for hockey!!! Thanks for the compliments, I guess wisdom comes with age!!! :(

I really have liked the role Mike Maltese plays when on the ice. While he may not end up on the scoring sheet often he offers a ton with his clean but physical brand of hockey. His play helps open things up for more skilled finishers. I expect continued growth from him and think he is a key to success this year if others follow suit.

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

Will be nice to see how this series shakes out. Cheering for the New WCHA team: go Beavers.

I think we can talk about the BTHC till we are blue in the face it isn't going to happen.

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

I'm excited for Billy Smith come back. At the end of last year he came back as a momentum player, and is a crazy fast skater. I would really like to see him play with Pietila (whom I reffed last year), and Nugent who are also really fast skaters.

The Knotty Pine was sold a year or two ago and is now Scotts Knotty Pine. Same burgers though. Sadly, they took down all the dollar bills from the ceiling.

One of those players mentioned will most likely have to sit out for Smith to return. Last game, NMU went with only 6 dmen as Spady sat out for Maltesse. Based on things so far, Id give the nod to Nugent over Pietila.

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

This should be an excellent series to watch, I think this is a great test for Northern in the early season. I'm interested to read the game recaps from any Northern fans that go to the game ( which i take it will include the vast majority that post on here). Best of luck this weekend
