Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

One of those players mentioned will most likely have to sit out for Smith to return. Last game, NMU went with only 6 dmen as Spady sat out for Maltesse. Based on things so far, Id give the nod to Nugent over Pietila.

You are correct. I would have to agree also, Nugent has looked great so far.

It worked out well, but I wondered why they took Spady out, he looked very improved so far this year. He has always been a guy I thought could be really good, but always made mistakes.

Spady skates with his head down. He may be a fast skater, but he always keeps his head straight down looking at the ice. I know a lot of people feel he could develop into a special player, but right now he is nothing more than "just a guy"

I think of it as more of a offense vs. defense trade. Despite giving up 5 goals to Tech, NMU was fairly decent against Tech on D. The problems came breaking the puck out of the zone and passing the neutral ice. Spady is a good two way defensemen, and we can/does play offense on the 3rd/4th line. I dont see that happening much this season with a new wave of young players that have decent upsides.

I think you may see this go on for at least a few weeks until a line clicks, or of course, those dreadful injuries come about.

Hopefully everybody, including posters, stay healthy this week. Some local schools are closed for the week due to Swine Flu.

John Thomsen here.
Not really on task re: up coming series ( GO CATS).
However, Tuesday night trivia for all Puckshead et all, continues this coming Tuesday night at Wings & Things (Superior Lanes). Same as always. Dave & Dave; Keep up the great work.

Thanks for letting me get in my message

I don't get why everyone is so taken with Spady. In my mind, Spady is what he is, a decent defenseman who plays passable offense. When he is on the ice he looks like he is a fast skater because he keeps his head down, its like he's looking for a lost contact lens on the ice or something. But in all seriousness, he is a solid 3rd line player and i'm glad he is on the team, but he just isn't a star and probably won't develop into one.

Surely this is somehow Walk Kyle's fault.

No, I don't really think it is. Not every player at the NCAA level can develop into a star player. I wish that NMU had a few more players who were of star-caliber. Team's need players like Spady to fill-out the lines and put a team on the ice. One thing I will give credit to Walt for is building a team with solid depth on the 3rd and 4th lines. I was just pointing out that for some reason people on this board keep expecting great things from Spady, when in reality he is just a solid player.

The only thing that I have to say to this is... Who would you consider to be our star-caliber players of the recent past (honestly curious, I'm not trying to start crap)? I would say Mike Santorelli and Darin Olver, on the forward side. Toward the end of their playing careers at NMU, both were very good offensively but horrible team players. I really hated watching that. That talent took Santorelli somewhere, but look where Olver ended up.

I like the talent of the younger Olver, but I really hate watching him play. He doesn't pass and it really makes me angry.

I will say, if there's one thing I've noticed about the Wildcats during Tech/NMU games in the last couple of years, it's that Mark Olver is an excellent skater and a "very slippery" forward (Dirk's own description there), but he also tends to be a puck hog. He can setup some nice plays, but more often than not he tries to be the hero and does too much stuff on his own. Tech's Jordan Baker sometimes has the same problem when he tries to get too fancy with the puck.

So tell me exactly why we are calling out/pointing out players? Namely Spady??

I hope my words weren't taken the wrong way. I am in no way saying Spady is a bad player. Spady, and every other Wildcat has earned his way onto this team. The work and the hours they put in for this team/university/community is a huge asset. It is a priviledge to have these guys here and to be able to watch/follow them while they are playing here, and beyond.

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

The Knotty Pine was sold a year or two ago and is now Scotts Knotty Pine. Same burgers though. Sadly, they took down all the dollar bills from the ceiling.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will not be the same.

Look forward to listening to this game from a far away land.. Wish I could be Home, Hunting, and watching Hockey....... I feel like I say, there is always next year......

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

*sigh* Why does Paula Weston hate NMU?

Last week she left out NMU's Brian Nugent in her list of players getting their first collegiate points. This week she can't spell Reid Ellingson's name (calling him Ellington all three times he's mentioned).

WHEN DOES THE HORROR END??? :(

when she no longer has an article ;)

.

Maybe I could put the English part of my degree to use, marry it with my hockey fandom, and replace her. *taps nose speculatively*

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

OK, 3 hrs away from game time. NMU opening the weekend up at the Berry Events Center (I miss MQT) against the Beavers. Should be an exciting night for all. I believe the Cats have to play their A game. What worries me is what Cat will come out of the bag, the one that struggled against MTU or the one that played 60 minutes of hockey against UM-D.

LETS GO CATS!!!!

Re: Bsu @ Nmu 10/23-24

FYI, at the luncheon today Coach Kyle stated that both Gustafson and Butcher are out with the flu. Coach said that Gussy had the swine flu and that Mark Olver is his roomate...Mark is o.k. for now. :(
