Brown University Bears 2011-12

Re: It's All Bears this weekend

Re: It's All Bears this weekend

Bears run their unbeaten string to five games, with two ties this weekend, up in Maine against the Black Bears. Not sure the last time they had two undefeated weekends in a row, but it has been a while.

Jamieson got the shutout in the nil-nil tie on Satuday, her second of the year, as goaltending and stingy team D continues to be hallmark of this years Bears. Up front, Landry continues to lead the scoring race, potting her sixth on Friday. Freshman Robson continues to look good up front. She scored another goal, and makes things happen everytime she is on the ice.

Good weekend by the Bears, well done girls.

Next up the traditional Providence Cup game on thanksgiving Friday.

Go Bears.

It is very exciting to see Brown's progress this year. This team has managed in nine game(2-2-5) to already surpass last season's win/tie record(2-22-4). I believe this team is capable of great things, keep up the good work!

Yesiree, a big congratulations to the Bears. A team riddled with injuries, plays with heart and determination, stakes to an early lead and then plays shut down hockey to get the win. Alena Polenska, back from a three weekend absence, and Aubree Moore with her first win of the season in nets, were the stars of the game for the Bears. Rookies Janice Yang, with her first ever goal, and Britanny Moorehead, with the game winner on the power play, did the scoring.

While it may not always look pretty, this gritty bunch is putting points on the board. With their first road win of the year, they are now over five hundred, and are bringing home the Mayor's cup to College Hill.

Way to go Bears.

Good luck on Sunday agains BC.

Not to minimize the win, but this trophy has changed hands about every other year. Last year was one of the rare years that Providence won it two years in a row. As a matter of fact, when this year's seniors were freshmen, Brown came in and stomped us 5-1 and this was one of their rare wins that year :)

Best effort of the year against B.C. Look out I think Brown is starting to believe in their coach and themselves

If memory serves me correctly, you are off by a year. This Cup has swapped hands each year for the last three years. Pretty sure the 5-1 Brown win was two years ago, not three years ago, the year Jamieson was a rookie and van Muyen and Brown were seniors on the team. That 5-1 win two years ago was a shocker.

You are right, I was off a year. 2008 was the first year for consecutive wins...

Nov. 29, 2008

Box Score
Providence, R.I. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team earned a 1-0 victory over intercity rival Brown University in the 14th annual Mayor's Cup. Senior Katy Beach (Cleveland, Ohio) scored the game winner at 3:33 of the third period and freshman netminder Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) denied 37 shots to earn the shutout. The Friars maintain the coveted Mayor's Cup in consecutive seasons for the first time in the 14 years the two teams have competed in the annual contest. With the win, Providence improves to 7-6-2 (3-2-1 Hockey East), while Brown falls to 2-9-1 (2-4-0 ECAC

So that means the cup has swapped every year since its inception, except in 2007 and 2008 when the Friars held it two years in a row. Good to know for next years prediction contest. :D

Re: It's All Bears this weekend

Big home weekend for the Bears with the formal celebration of the 50th anniversary of Meehan to take place on Saturday with a double header.

Today Bears face the Bobcats. Since they tied each other up in CT in early November, the Bobcats have been on a strong run winning five of seven games, including the last three in a row. Their only blemishes were a loss to the Big Red and to Clarkson up in Potsdam.

Not to be outdone, Bears have only lost once in six games since that tie. The only blemish was a 3-1 loss to the no 4 ranked Boston College. That stretch included a win over PC to capture the Mayor's cup.

THe Saturday Meehan celebration includes an Ivy double header, Women vs the Tigers, and the Men vs the Bulldogs. Bears will be out to avenge a 1-0 loss at the hands of the Tigers earlier last month.

Here is the formal preview:

Re: It's All Bears this weekend

Tough weekend for the Bears. Just an observation - The Bears' line changes during the game really need to be fixed; there are kids getting off the ice on the backcheck, off the ice on a neutral zone transition, some even hopping off the ice for a change while their own defensemen are trying to pass it to them to break the puck out. Some girls even opted not to change at all, taking 1:30 minute shifts. Even on a powerplay, shifts should never exceed 1 minute; players should be changed one by one as it progresses. The ladies need to watch their changes, and the coaches might want to bring this to their attention as well; maybe they already have, in which case I hope these games were a good learning experience for them. They might have gotten away with this in past games, but it didn't fly well for this weekend.

In addition, the Bears' game got more and more selfish as it progressed; indeed, it seemed a couple of the girls' sticks were magnets - just couldn't seem to pass the puck away. It's really sad to see that going on at the collegiate level; hockey is played with 5/6 players on the ice, the one man shows need to stop. Come on Bears, you're better than this.

As always though, the Bears put forth a full effort, it has always been a hardworking group of girls, this just wasn't their weekend. Wednesday will be another blowout game against Sacred Heart, 15-0 this time? Perhaps this will be a bit of a self-esteem boost.

10-0 against Sacred Heart. Again. Wonder what it's like for the Bears to get a taste of what it must feel like for Cornell when they play Brown.

But nobody can complain about another win. Congrats ladies.

Re: It's All Bears this weekend

Happy New Year to all Bruno Fans.

The Brown Bears started off 2012, where they left off in 2011, with a win. They came away with a 4-1 win over Ivy rival Yale at Ingalls last night, to push their record to .500 (5-5-5) taking over sole possession of the last ECAC play-off spot in the process.

The Bears had a strong game on the specialty units, going 1 for 2 on the power play and killing of all three penalties. They were only one second away from a perfect 2 for 2 on the PP and 3 for 3 on the PK, as a second power play goal failed to beat a period ending buzzer by a mere second.

Highlight of the evening was the opening goal of the game by rookie Janice Yang, playing near her own back yard, with a sweet finish to open the scoring. She would notch another one later in the game, earning her the first star of the game.

It took Brown about ten minutes to get going. Yale came out of the gate strongly, out shooting the Bears 9-2 in the early going. As has often been the case this year, The Bears weathered the early storm and then found some timely scoring to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on goals by Yang and Lauren Vella. Brown came out strong early in the second, resulting in the aforementioned second marker by Yang to extend the lead to 3-0. This one came on the Power Play setup on a great feed by Alena Polenska. Yale got that one back later in the frame to narrow the lead to 3-1. Brown almost got another power play marker in the dying seconds of the period, but the point shot from Jennifer Nedow that found the back of the net failed to beat the buzzer. Brown did get their insurance marker in the third to round out the scoring. Emilie Dolan cashed in on a great feed from Laurie Jolin on a two on one. Brown points leader Katelyn Landry had another good game with two helpers. Katie Jamieson was solid in nets, turning away 25 of 26 shots, to earn the victory.

A great start to the new year for the Bears. Next up a NC game versus the UConn Huskies at Storrs on Saturday.

Ok Newbiebear...time to relax. The Bears are slightly improved over what they were last year...still a Bad team [but now with a mediocre coach vs a clown].

Beating S. Heart 10 zip, and beating one win Yale may make you all warm and fuzzy, but in the real world, it don't mean zip. Pipe down for a bit, at least until this team wins a meaningful game. Whoops...had a chance to do that tonight but instead spit the bit and lost 3-0. Nice.:D
