Re: Brown University Bears 2011-12

Looking forward to the new season. Roster has been announced and a brand new coaching staff is now in place. Formal practices to start soon and the puck will drop on the 15th for the annual scrimmages with Princeton and Yale.

Go Bears.

The official announcement on the Brown website of the Andrew McPhee appointment.

"I am excited to have Andy join our staff as he brings along nine years of head coaching experience," said Bourbeau. "Andy inherited a team at the bottom of the league and in five years brought that team to a nationally-ranked, top-10 program."

Expect an announcement soon on the second AC.

Go Bears.

Hey, I bumped into her first as she was scouting the JWHL games at Ristuccia on Friday. :p

Here is the link to the season preview for the Bears:

Team showed some good promise in the scrimmages last weekend. While it is early, and there is clearly a lot of work ahead, this still relatively young team is showing a lot of promise early on. With some added talent up front and a more balanced lineup, better days should be ahead.

First game this coming weekend.

Go Bears.

Re: Brown University Bears 2011-12

Hopefully some of the former "screamers" will get new identities and new attitudes. Give the team a chance to come around. Be nice, don't judge.

If I remember correctly, didn't you also bump into DC one time while riding one of those cardboard Romper room cars? Or was that a daydream I had?

Re: Brown University Bears 2011-12

Mr Rat. My wish came true. I hope for nothing but good things for the hockey team now that (they are all gone). I will continue to follow them every chance i get. No I am not changing my identity to please any one. To be truthful....I hope that we "SCREAMED" so loud that they heard us down at brown..Oh..they did..they fired them all.....Newiebear. I wish your daughter and the team all the best this year....But have to ask you a question...Who does she like better...old one or new one...

Re: Brown University Bears 2011-12

Today is the start of the real games. The Bears are travelling to Colgate and Cornell to open up their regular season play. The pre-season has shown a lot of early promise, with a strong incoming freshman class that appears to have added a much needed scoring punch to the team. While being carefull to not get our hopes up too high, considering last years season, looking forward to this weekend.

Good luck to the Bears this weekend.

Re: Brown University Bears 2011-12

A mixed bag weekend for the Bears. The performance by both tenders was clearly the highlight of the weekend.

Aubree Moore kept Brown in the game on Friday night at Princeton, letting in only one goal, a power play marker, while facing 38 shots. Alas the team in front of her did not seem to have their legs and could not muster much offence.

The team looked a lot better as whole on Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac. The pace of the game was much higher. Again it was the goaltending that stole the show, as a 46 save performance by Katie Jamieson was the key for Bruno to earn an 2-2 tie versus Quinnipiac. Timely goal scoring by Brown rookies Shannon Flatley and Brittany Moorhead, their first career goal for both, gave Brown the lead twice. The Bears team defense played strongly to keep Quinnipiac to the outside. Most of the shots were from the perimeter, and the shot count clearly had a home team flavor to it.

Good comeback game for the Bears after a weak effort on Friday. Now looking forward the the home opener next weekend versus RPI.

Congratulations to Aubree and Katie for the great tending this weekend. You both did amazing in nets. Congratulations as well to Shannon and Brittany for your first career goals.

Go Bears

Hello fans of Brown Hockey-

I just wanted to quickly touch base with you in regards to the Goals For Good project. In short, it's a competitive goal-a-thon between every team in the ECAC, and every team has partnered with a charity in close relation to their team, school, and or community. We're currently looking for more prizes, but as of now, there is $1,000 on the line going to the local food cupboard of the team that raises the most money. Please check out www.goalsforgood.org to learn more and support your team and their charity by way of their goals and wins.

Thank you,
Kevin McNamara

Re: Brown University Bears 2011-12

With all due respect to NewbieBear, the effort on Friday against Princeton seemed to be a far cry from a "weak effort". The Bears played to win, and the inability to muster offense was not due to the fact that the girls "did not seem to have their legs." Rather, it was due to what appeared to be a very defensive system that the girls were quite restricted by, and consisted of something that resembled 3 defense men and 2 wingmen throughout the duration of the game. It is a shame that the Bears have such a talented team this year but are not producing the wins that they are more than capable of. Until the system changes, I fear the Bears might continue running into unnecessary roadblocks as the season progresses.

I agree that Aubree and Jamieson stood on their heads this weekend, they no doubt saved the Bears from what could have been tremendous losses (and what could have been a potential slaughtering by Quinnipiac). Flatley and Moorehead, I offer you my congratulations as well.

The Bears are clearly playing a defensive style first type of hockey, but to me that was not the reason they struggled against Princeton. They lost virtually every faceoff, so they never had control of the puck. In addition they were losing battles and giving away the puck. Unlike the game the weekend before against Colgate with the same style when they had a hard fore-check going, this never materialized against Princeton, except maybe for a couple of minutes in the third period. The lack of push, and the constant losing of face-offs and battles is an indication of a team not completely in the game physically and/or mentally. While the Bears were outplayed by a more superior Quinnipiac team a day later, they showed much more push and poise in the Saturday game, again using that same defensive style. Remember as well that they were missing a key forward and a key D last weekend.

Let's support this team and have them get comfortable with the new system and the new coaching staff. Building the team back up to respectability takes time. We need to support this team through thick and thin, not try to tear it down at every down cycle.

Go Bears.

The Bears are clearly playing a defensive style first type of hockey, but to me that was not the reason they struggled against Princeton. They lost virtually every faceoff, so they never had control of the puck.

Perhaps the loss of faceoffs had to do with the fact that there were defensemen taking the Bears' faceoffs; if my eyes did not deceive me, I saw Jacquie Pierri and Shannon Flatley, both clearly defensemen, taking faceoffs during that game. As I am not on the bench I do not know if this was due to the coaches' orders or because of a communication error, but regardless, having a defenseman taking a faceoff when they have clearly had no practice at it is ludicrous.

While the Bears were outplayed by a more superior Quinnipiac team a day later, they showed much more push and poise in the Saturday game, again using that same defensive style.

Although the Bears may have won significantly more faceoffs against Quinnipiac, clearly losing faceoffs is not the main contributor to the Bears' "never having control of the puck" as you had said concerning the game against Colgate. The Bears had next to zero control of the puck the entire game, but rather spent the entirety of it chasing the puck around the defensive end. Being outshot 13 to 50 speaks for itself. Where is the poise in that? When they did finally get hold of it, all the forwards did (all 2 of them, rather) was chip the puck out of the zone so they could change and get fresh legs on the ice. Seeing as even from the stands all I could hear was the forward coach, Andy, yelling at the wingers to "just get it up and out of the zone off of the glass!" it seems they did not have much choice. What was that about? The two goals were due to quick rushes, and when the girls did finally keep possession of the puck, they were kept to the boards throughout the duration of those brief spells of offense.

Building the team back up to respectability takes time. We need to support this team through thick and thin, not try to tear it down at every down cycle.

Stating the obvious is not "tearing a team down at every cycle." I stated objective observations. And from what I observed, the Bears' new "system" (if that is what you want to call it), is clearly not working. While the Bears may get used to the new style of gameplay, I believe there is a reason that there is not a single other team in the ECAC playing that system. Perhaps it is because no matter how much the ladies perfect the system, it still allows for next to zero generation of offense.

I did however, upon significant research, notice that Trinity, Andy's old team, used a similar system. Hmm. I wonder who's idea that was?

I think you missed the main point of my post. On here to support the team no matter what the system. Neither you or I have any influence, nor should we have, on the system employed by the team. It is up to the coaches to decide on that.

If you look at the stats of the faceoffs in the Princeton game, you'll notice that Flatley took one faceoff and Pierri three, both late in the game, that is only 4 of 53 they took. To me that was a coach trying to stem the tide loosing faceoffs as the three centres were a comined 14-28 in the faceoff circle and the rest of the team 1-10.
