Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

Okay you guys, it's time for a

TIME OUT

in the corner :)

This is the real world and life is not always fair to ANYONE. There may be more to the Brown sagas then any of us know about and it possibly is none of our business what goes on in the confines of the Brown Womens' Hockey team and coaching staff. Disclosure: am a parent of a daughter currently playing D-1 college hockey, but not on the Brown team.

I'm thinking some of you from the States may have local primaries going on today - hope you all got a chance to go out and exercise your privilege to vote. Polls usually close around 8Pm local time.

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

And I have the democratic right to voice my opinions or even start a mutiny if that's what I want.

So let's say, just for fun.............. that you convince me
that you convince OnMaa, Trillium, etc....
say you even somehow convince Notfromaroundhere......

Say we all "saw the light", and said you know what, they're right! Fire the *****! LOL, you do realize that we have no power whatsoever, not individually, not even as a group.

We can all say, you win! And it means absolutely nothing...you know why?

Because of the Trustees of Brown support the President of Brown, who supports the AD of Brown, who supports the Women's Hockey Coach of Brown, and they don't read this board, and they are free to run the place however they like. We as citizens, with our democratic freedoms, have the right to spend our hard earned dollar on some other provider of higher education, and that's the end of it!

Done!

"Correct me if I'm wrong, Sandy...." but posting on this forum is not a right, but rather a privilege, and as is being a member of a team year to year, day to day.

Ah, well… I guess that’s all I needed to hear, it could have been more sincere but beggars can’t be choosers.

I know anything said here doesn’t mean anything. And the same goes for every other thread on this site. But we all still find ourselves here writing stuff.

People from Brown came on this forum to talk about their team just like anybody else from any other school. People on this forum just really didn’t like what we were saying. There wasn't any intent to start some huge debate.

I’m pretty beat from this whole rights and morals discussion. I just want Brown to get a new hockey coach, I’m not the one who makes that decision, so I came here to vent as an aggravated fan.

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

You sir, must have a mental deficiency.

...
Somebody get that long sleve white coat - the one with the straps attached at the end of the sleves.

Wow, been away for awhile but you folks sure have been busy. Jersey Shore, Really? This would be a best seller!

The above quotes got me thinking. People on this website are under the assumption that a coach is a God with no rules and regulations; no boundaries. Well, what IS the criteria for being a coach? I know they are required to undergo CORI and SORI checks, an interview and probably references, but what about psychological testing or even substance abuse testing? Are the standards different for players than they are for coaches? Just asking.......

You've done your part for the team and I'm sure you probably have an overflowing userCP inbox. When a person takes a stand on moral grounds, it is always an uphill battle, but the end always justifies the means. Loved your quote, btw; it's only a matter of time before she falls flat on her face.

Well, that being the case, what are we all going to do with our free time now??? :D :D

To answer your question and it is a legitimate one, the "rules" Digit must live by consist of the policies of the university and any others established by the Athletics department. These are the same rules set for other faculty/staff. And of course there are the NCAA rules which are generally codified in the Athletics department's policies and procedures.

Criteria for hire are set by the AD and typically specify any degrees (some coaches are required to teach as well) and/or specific experiences required. Other qualifications that may be considered are also spelled out. There is a website for coaching job postings - don't remember it off hand. I've read the job postings a few times. Pretty much look alike except for the number of years of experience at what level of responsibility and any specific degree requirements.

As to background checks, there are a limited number of things that any employer can check on. Most top level higher ed institutions do a local police check for the current residence of the applicant (to pick up any current issues) and a full FBI background check.

These things are not foolproof if you've been following the story of the shooting at UAH. A few institutions have drug testing, but mostly for positions requiring security clearances or handling sensitive information or money. Can't speak for Brown here. Personality checks will never fly at higher education institutions, as the faculty senates consider that an invasion of freedom of thought. Can't ask about Psychiatric treatment - EEO issue. Job references are purely for verifying job experience dates and duties. Most employers will not give written evaluations as they tend to spur litigation.

Standards for students are significantly weaker. They do ask on the application if you've been convicted of any felony, but I've never run across an institution that is willing to pay for a background check on an applicant. If they do have problems with a student however, many institutions will run the full criminal background check on the student to see if they can expell for lying on the application. It is seen as a quick way to deal with sticky situations.

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

The college hockey experience is not predicated on 'rules, policies, and procedures'. All of those things are very much subservient to the EMOTIONAL relationships that are formed between player & coach. I would be far more concerned about the possible acrimony in that locker room than would I the pecking order of politics at Brown.

You got that right, Pops. Unfortunately, coaches often bring their own emotional baggage into a locker room and that may interfere with his/her own ability to maintain control of the different personalities of her team members, thus leading to acrimony. It all makes sense that if no "bond" is established then likewise, there is no team, just a bunch of individuals "working" separately for their own successes.

The "rules, policies, and procedures" all deal with protecting the legal rights of both student and faculty and at most universities don't deal with how the instructor (or coach in this instance) operate their program/class. That is left up to the faculty member/coach.

I'm not sure what kind of "emotional relationships" you are referring to. A good coach should not get wrapped up in his/her players personal lives extensively. As to the interaction on the ice and in the lockerroom, the coach has a job to manage the inter-player relationships to the extent they affect the team performance. To the extent that is unmanagable, it is the coach's duty to discipline and/or remove players who are not willing to relate in the coach's desired manner.

If all goes well, yes there can be a positive working bond between coach and player and can be personal on a limited basis.

This isn't all that different from the classroom where the instructor manages the discussion to help the students work together to understand a subject. He doesn't get the luxury of selecting which students attend his class for the most part and does not get to kick anyone out unless they violate a school rule, policy, or procedure that allows for that action. If all goes well in the classroom, there is a positive learning bond between instructor and student and can be personal also on a limited basis.

While you may think people may hate Digit, let me remind you there were plenty of people inside and outside the team who hated Herb Brooks until they started winning. Not trying to compare the skill level of said coaches, but lots of people both inside and outside the team were questioning him, his methods and his sanity. What I am saying is to let the coach do the coaching and if anyone thinks they know more, feel free to drop a resume on the AD's desk.

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

Hmmm, got me thinking....what kind of "emotional relationships" do you suppose Bobby Knight ever developed?

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

notfromaroundhere... You said before that you only met Digit once before for only 5 minutes?. Is that true.

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

if that's the story your going to stick with then your opinions don't mean much.

And herb brooks figured it out in 6 months not 6 years

Isn't it funny he got cut from the team he later coached to a gold medal?

there are no ends that justify the coaches means here so people should be p.o.'d

Herb Brooks was never known as a players coach. The real Scotty Bowman was never a players coach. Both walked into a lot of situations with a very talented bunch of players ready to produce, but didn't look for those "emotional relationships" I was talking about. In fact both coaches were known for the head games they played with their players.

Point is that all of you who want Digit to sing Kumbayah with her players as THE path to a better team don't understand the history of the best coaches in the game. While it puts a happy face on the program, it doesn't win develop players nor build championship teams.

Being in control of the emotions of your players is the key to being an effective coach. And the tools for that are not always what makes everyone happy right away.

And no, I don't think it was strange that he was cut from the Olympic team. I don't think I ever heard him say it was a bad decision either.
