Brown - Oops! They did it again.

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

I have no doubt that you guys have heard good things about the coaches from players on the team. That’s fine, but if freshmen are the only people your getting your info from, then your relying on people who only have a superficial view of the program’s issues.

You don’t even have to take my word for it. Go talk to anyone who’s not in the freshmen class. Go as far as to ask someone who graduated to see if I’ve misrepresented anything. One thing I no doubly expect you to hear is, when you’re a freshmen you can do no wrong and life is good.

Well...you didn't take much time off...:(

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

People are quick to blame everything on the kids for overlooking any issues. Brown is exactly like a bunch of d-3 schools in regards to the school itself and in a sense recruiting. I’ve seen colleges like Amherst and Middlebury ranked higher than numerous Ivies. The only difference is the competition they play in sports.

How does that not show these players are competitive athletes. This year’s freshmen and recruiting class can be blamed for deciding Brown while knowing the team is struggling, but there weren’t any clear indicators for any of the classes before them. Even if you want to argue there were, all these kids are only guilty of wanting to play d-1 and play against d-1 caliber players, even if that means not having a good record.

You're serious!?...so which is it? In your previous post, you say Digit should be fired because the team is in a 5 year slump. Then you say that other than this year's freshman class there was no indication the team was struggling (your own words!)???

I would say it has been very clear the team was struggling for a couple of seasons before that.

There is definitely nothing wrong with wanting to go to a struggling program. Whether it is to be able to play D1 hockey, or to go where you can make a bigger impact on the program, ...or choosing that school for other reasons despite the fact the team happens to be struggling.

The problem is acting all surprised and frustrated and unhappy once you get there that the team is struggling and want to lobby for a different coach because of either her coaching style, the team record, or the level of turnover--all of which were already a matter of public record.

Despite your perception, I actually don't blame it ALL on the kids. From what I can see, the kids that are still there are working hard and generally doing the best they can--and just maybe that's why they're there. They don't give up even when they are down. I think that is most certainly a credit to the players...but probably the coaches deserve at least a little of the credit for that too. It's hard to stay motivated to work hard under much adversity.

I think there are quite a few talented kids on the team...but certainly still not nearly enough of them yet to finish significantly higher in the standings even with a different coach. That much is obvious to me, having watched a variety of other teams who are higher in the standings. So a little patience will be required regardless before this team makes the playoffs again. I think in particular the freshmen Jamieson, Farrer, Jolin and Polenska are great additions you immediately notice out there...so it appears to me the talent level is improving, and a sign of hope for the future. Getting a couple more quality D next year would help alot.

Digit also really does seem to be trying hard to change her approach. She certainly is FAR more restrained on the bench than she used to be. So I give her credit for trying to work on herself at least. That doesn't seem to me to be indicative of someone who has given up, or is not wanting to accept some personal accountability for addressing the problems. Maybe it's still not enough, I couldn't say.

I do hold the coaches responsible for the high level of turnover over an extended period of time, and the need to reduce it going forward. Turnover is generally required to rebuild, so I suspect it may be high again going into next season. As has been said many times, it would likely be even higher with a new coach. But if the team doesn't then stabilize and make forward progress, I would agree coaching changes would have to be considered as more quality recruits are beginning to chose Brown again. You just can't be in rebuilding mode forever and this team has been rebuilding for several years. And some coaches may just not have the different skillsets required to lead a successful rebuilding effort, despite their other merits.

But at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter what I think, or you think though anyway, that's for the administration to decide. All you can do is make the best of the situation in the meantime, which is the only thing you do have control over.

Re: Brown - Oops! They did it again.

I was starting to enjoy the discussion of greatest skater to have learned the game on a pond.... Howe, The Great One, Orr, others....

Decided I'm too lazy to read all the other stuff in between. Looks like more of the same blah, blah, blah. If I missed anything important, will someone please highlight it for my tired eyes?

It must be hard to read something that proves your wrong. My posts must be so long because I just can’t relate to that.

Sorry, I'll try to make them shorter though.

Like people have pointed out, a one or two year slump doesn’t indicate doomsday. A five-year slump is a completely different thing were talking about.

No good upper classman, weird the program lacks those.

If she needs to work on herself, that’s fine. Retire don’t waste the players time. Once she’s ready she can comeback. Michael Jordan, Brett Farve, Jay-Z… all retired and then came out of retirement. Their public appearances seemed pretty well kept.

Attrition rate has been high for the past 6 years. These weren’t rebuilding years. Each of those six years the record has been worse than the previous years’. You’re mislabeling the entire situation.

If they got a new coach, the biggest surprise would be the increase in number of kids at the tryouts and a huge decline in attrition rate.

See, I’m just not happy with what the athletic department finds as satisfactory for a coach. Call it school spirit or having a respect for the players, or even mislabel it as some kid who got cut and is getting their revenge on the coach. Call it what ever you would like, but going from semi-finals to last place in six years is not something that indicates anything is changing.

Yeah, cuz its youth hockey. Pluck down your $200 tryout fee and let fly. Hey, that Emma Watson chick plays hockey...you could throw some skates on her!

No one said that--I focused on freshmen because it suggests potential for optimism that recruiting efforts are having some success despite the potential turnoff of a 5 year skid.

Dancewicz and Van Muyen also immediately come to mind as players I noticed making an impact.

Its also no secret though that Brown's recruitment did lag many other programs in recent years, one of the reasons for their slide.

Now you might be onto something...Emma would certainly be good for attendance, and might therefore raise some extra funds to put back into the program
;)

Brown has the highest attrition rate year in and year out. Someone already pointed out none of them transferred. So I guess you could think Emma Watson is the only hockey player waiting for Digit to quit in order to play for the team?

But there's always Bruce and Demi Moore's and Stephen King's kids who would want to give it a go too.

See that's the problem, you can't just keep looking at things one dimensionally.

I don’t know if you want them all trying out. If Stephen King’s kid ever got cut, imagine the novels you’d have to read about on this forum then.

At least they'd be entertaining and well written.

I know, right? I’m still using Hooked on Phonics just to try to get my point across here so I would love if she could help me out.

(I seriously agree, I know my writing is terrible)

Digit has been far more restrained this year, because she knows that the AD and his office are watching her.So please do not give her the credit that you think she deserves. She is only pertending to care, in order to keep her job. She is just buying time for the next job opening elsewhere. I have watched her in action for a dozen years, and yes, she is obnoxious

Hux, you should be ashamed of yourself for speaking about an established young lady or any lady for that matter in these terms. GROW UP Your camera appears to be blurring your vision.
