Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

If the shirtless guys were out last night for Harvard, they will definitely be there tonight. Last 2 home games with Dartmouth were quite the spectacle with that crew sitting behind the Dartmouth bench. Some may say they were overboard, but it seemed like good, clean fun. Against Yale in December, they may have, however, gone too far.

KDiff, I too am recovering from illness. First time I will have missed a Senior Night since 2000. Was the videocast a worthwhile purchase?

That's a shame; what a great streak, especially since you don't live in the area. The online stream is literally just a live video feed with no replay, scoreboard, etc with the radio stream broadcast simultaneously. For a one-time thing, it's worth $8, especially on Senior Night.

As for the shirtless guys- I think it was actually against Dartmouth two or three years back where they first made an appearance, and were subsequently hounded by the equally-annoying fans of schools like RPI and Cornell on these forums. If you hear reports of them going overboard, ignore it. When they show up (typically 3-4 games a year), they're obnoxious and disctracting to the opponent...which is exactly what they're supposed to do! Unless they physically harm anyone, they're fine by me. Once that line is crossed, however, there's a problem.

What specifically occurred against Yale? I stood at the ends based on which way Brown was shooting, like I always do, so I wasn't too close to their section. They were nice and loud, as I recall.

To respond to your more recent post- that's great news about Garbutt! I didn't even realize he was still playing, but good for him. It's about time.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

We got 1 point out of 16 possible in the most important stretch of the season.

What happened to Maclellan during the game? I heard he was hurt pretty badly?

He was. After a marginal 5-minute call on Hourihan, ejecting him for what appeared to be a shoulder-to-shouder hit, Maclellan was on the penalty kill. He took the puck at his own blue line, was held by one of the Dartmouth players, and skated through the neutral zone. He dished the puck, and in trying to get it back, did a toe drag across the Dartmouth blue line. He was blindsided by Connor Goggin, who finished high. Jack lay on the ice for a few moments, but did make motion and was on the ice in his suit for the post-game senior presentation.

That said, he is out. It looked like an obvious head/concussion/upper body injury.

There is a thread somewhere else on here that says another player should be out as long as the injured player can't play. I'm not sure of Goggin's intent, but it was a nasty play - exactly the type of hit they are trying to get rid of in hockey.

As for 1 point in 16, that is absolutely the case. But looking back at it, there are a handful you'd want back: Clarkson-SLU at home, Princeton at home, certainly Dartmouth, Harvard on the road. All of those were games where the Bears had an opportunity to win, but didn't. But I have a hard time questioning heart. Just seems that this team could not really get over the hump in the last month or so.

Last year, the wheels fell of the wagon when Maclellan got hurt against Princeton. He was out for the playoff series, and the Bears were terrible against Quinnipiac - and that was with Harry Z carrying the torch into the playoffs. I don't really know who can/will pick it up if Maclellan is out for, dare we say, a long time. And that's with the Bears already missing Wahl, their best d-man this season, and Zaires.

In other news - back to Garbutt. That gives that season of Bears 3 NHLers (plus Maclellan, who could very well be playing at the next level). Vokes was also on that team, and he was certainly no slouch and at least as talented as Maclellan. So... 3 NHLers, Maclellan and Vokes. And three wins. Yep, that makes perfect sense.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

In looking at the ECAC standings this morning, I noted that Brown has given up the most goals of any team in the league. Strongly suggests that the D has been a major cause of Brown's woes down the stretch.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

RE: the Maclellan hit- BrunoFan pretty much hit it on the head. It was a dirty, vicious retaliation to a much milder hit just a minute before. He had absolutely no intent to play the puck whatsoever, and every intent to injure a guy who had just dangled the living daylights out of his defense partner.

It saddens me to say this, but we probably won't see Jack in a Brown uniform again. I hope he is able to recover adequately and play in the pros, where he belongs, but he may never be the same. I've seen it too many times in too many sports, including with Tara Mounsey of the Brown women's team in the late '90's. After being brutally taken down by her Olympic teammate, the "great" Angela Ruggiero, Mounsey missed almost an entire season, and simply could never return to her former Olympian-caliber of hockey. I fear a similar fate awaits Jack Maclellan.

On the whole, I can't remember seeing a Dartmouth team play as rough and dirty as they did last night. I lost a lot of respect for Bob Gaudet, if he is telling his players to play hockey that way (especially against his former apprentice).

And poor goaltending. Just one of the goals Clemente allowed last night could be classified as anything more than weak. With a depleted defensive core, he's needed to step up and be dominant. He hasn't been anything of the sort.

Earlier in the season, we were all excited about the defense. We ranked in the top 15 in the country, and though the offense was struggling, the defense kept us in every game. Well, after allowing 4, 3, 7, 5, 5, 3, 3, and 6 in our past 8, I think we can safely say that defense is no longer a strong suit. Wahl was a huge loss, and while the freshmen have showed promise, they're very inexperienced and didn't see a lot of playing time earlier in the season, and so they have struggled.

It was a terrible way to go out on Senior Night- with a "poof" instead of a "bang." We just have to hope Whittet can do something to fire these guys up without their captain.

Anyone know if the ECAC is looking at the hit? From the radio broadcast, and Mike R's comments, it did appear that Dartmouth was playing a more physical game than it usually does.

Who appointed you credibility arbiter?

You seem to think that the locker room is some kind of sacrosanct space.

Get a life!

I nominated myself, you want to second it? From my experience the locker room during a game was reserved for players, coaches, and maybe a trainer as needed (but they generally were in a seperate space as well). I guess your experience was different?.......parents, teachers, friends, girlfriends (or your significant other), advisors were invited in?

Maybe your point of view is from youth hockey, where your dad still had to come into the locker room to tie your skates........it's a little different at this level.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Does anybody know if Maclellan is playing this weekend? Shame to end a career in the press box (and shame to begin his AHL/NHL career that way...)

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Anyone else find it frustrating that teams like UMass @ Lowell can rise so fast in a much tougher league than the ECAC while we are still mired in a decade + long run of bad hockey? I can live with Harvard/Yale having good teams (or even University of Hotel Management at Ithaca), but Union? Come on now.

It is frustrating, but last 3 years has shown improvement, albeit not on the grandscale we all want. Based on shaky goaltending and a youthful D, it is certainly arguable that this year is a step back. But when Brown was on its game, great hockey was played. 2 wins over Union, i over Cornell, one over UNH, one over PC and six goals against Colgate at Starr means this was not a lost season. brendan is on the right track. Keep in mind that it took Nate Leaman 6 years to put together U's very solid teams of the past two years. Every year represented a step forward it was surely a wait the U fans are enjoying now.

Hopefully, this weekend Brown can get untracked and Mike C can put together good games and next week look forward to doing some damage. Of the teams that Brown might end up playing next week, other than Colgate and Q, its chances aren't that bad.

Today's prov J has a story that states Jack M will not play this weekend but prably will play next week. Also, Matt Wahp appears to be out for the rest of the season.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Thanks. I am watching the game online now. Saw my first Brown games live last weekend, 27 has some magic connection with the puck.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Terrible way to end the RS. Anyone have details on Coach Whittet's game misconduct at Q and Robertson's game misconduct at end of OT against P?

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

He got into a "discussion" with Chip McDonald that got rather animated. Chip promptly called the bench minor and was skating away from Whittet towards the scorers when Brendan told him he was "number 1". The linesman prompty tossed him. To say your coach came unglued is an understatement. If he was trying to inspire the team it didn't work and in fact ended up costing them the game.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

When Quinnipiac got called for too many men tonight, the fan in front of me was holding up his five fingers on one hand and his middle on the other and pointing them directly at MacDonald. Stupid but funny.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

This team just totally unraveled. We got 2 of a possible 20 points to end the season. That's absolutely pathetic. This team should have been better this year; should have been able to get home ice. But instead, we took a HUGE step back. As historically bad as we are against QU, I am expecting nothing but a sweep this weekend. And to be honest, I won't be too upset about it. We haven't won a freaking hockey game since Union, on JANUARY 21st.
