Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

If it's not an absence of heart, please, tell me- what in the hell has led to us losing to those doormats? You can't reasonably argue that those are better teams than us, because they just aren't. Plain and simple, they all suck. And we lost to them all. And were shut out by three of them, and shutout by one of them TWICE.

Some teams just have your number, regardless of how your season is going.

Plain and simple, they all suck? And Brown is so good and talented that they should always win those games? You're right next to RPI in the standings, and you're behind St. Lawrence if you hadn't noticed. SLU has bascially the same record as Brown playing a harder schedule. RPI beat you twice and tied Cornell. If you think Brown is significantly better or more talented than either of them, you're delusional.

No, I have just seen them play at a level that is vastly superior to any of those teams. I don't mean to insult anyone's team, and my words probably were harsh and over-the-top, but if we had played a good game, we would have beaten all the teams I listed.

Fair enough, although I still don't agree with you.

If you'd played better than the other team you would have won? Yes. If both teams played their best games, Brown would always beat St. Lawrence or RPI? I disagree.

I've seen St. Lawrence play games at a level vastly superior to RPI or Brown, too. But RPI smoked SLU in Troy. I've seen RPI play at a higher level than their results would indicate. But mostly they've been terrible. In the end you are what you are. These are the bottom three teams in the conference. Had SLU played every game the way they played against Dartmouth in the holiday tournament, they would've demolished Brown twice. But they didn't. If any of these three teams played to the limit of their capabilities on a consistent basis, they would be higher in the standards. The fact is they haven't.

It's funny that the band will typically make it to 3-4 home games a year, but they made the trip to Ithaca for tonight's game.

Must say I did not know that an 'academic advisor' would be invited into the Brown locker room during the games as wll as after the games? (unless it was to say hello to the players/bring children in after the coach has addressed the team). Are you asked to participate in any pre/post game speeches or strategies? Things have come a really long way, when I played the advisor position was a total figure head position - I don't think anyone on the team ever went to his office for advice - certainly the players and coaches weren't "opening their hearts" to him.

Anyone close to the Brown hockey operation knows that the role of the faculty advisor has changed under Coach Brendan Whittet. It probably helped that Brendan and I were friends before he came back to Brown, so there was no need to build trust. From day one Brendan has made me part of the Brown "hockey family" (his terminology), extending to me an open invitation to travel with the team and participate in team activities. (Today, for example, I attended a talk for the team by former Brown player and current Edmonton Oilers Assistant General Manager Ricky Olczyk'92.) Common sense dictates that I should use the open invitation selectively and with the well-being of the team as a primary concern. I do have regular, private meetings with Brendan and remain in touch with the members of the team over a variety of matters. Brendan is exemplary in his understanding that the success of the Brown hockey program depends on the articulation of many different elements and is not limited to the proverbial Xs and Os. I share his passion for Brown University and the Brown hockey program, and am honored to be able to help out albeit in a small way.

Sound better - luncheons, speaking engagements, etc. There is zero reason for an alum, parent, or teacher to be in the locker room DURING a game. Brendan would have lost all credibility if that was the case.

Another tough weekend for Brown. Amazing to see that SLU picked up 4 more points this weekend and RPI 3 more. Yale & Princeton seem to be falling off fast and we could probably pass them if we can right the ship for these final four games.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

A tough loss Saturday. Scoring 6 goals against a good team suggests that Brown is much better than its record would seem to suggest. Except for 2 spectacular saves by Michalek in the third Brown would have won. Offense was solid. Jack M is an exceptional skater. He was all over the ice. His determination was evident from the start. I liked the fact that he took on the officials when they would remove him from a face-off.

Defense is another story. But Colgate is a very skilled team. It is certainly with Union IMHO the class of the league. Their odd-man rushes and tape to tape passing led to goals that Marco and Mike had no chance on. It was frustrating with Colgate throwing a pass in front of Marco/Mike to a skater sitting alone on the other side of the net for the easy goal. Brown finally adjusted in the third to that tactic.

Brown was missing several key players due to injuries. Wahl, Zaires, Hourihan were all out. Jimmy Siers got some time and I thought he played well. He showed some clean physical play. At one point he planted himself in front of the 'Gate goalie, 'Gate Dman tried to move him out, but could not. Rough stuff started and Siers in retaliating got he call. Siers was also strong in the the corners, and it was clear that the 'Gate skaters were respecting his toughness. However, he drew 2 penalties, the first one a questionable call, and then the second referred to above. He didn't play much after that. Here's hoping he gets some more time next week.

This weekend is turning out to be a crucual weekend for home ice in the first round. With Dartmouth reeling and Brown always Harvard well at home, and a strong offensive showing at Colgate, Brown cannot be written off.

I think Euler's relationship with the team is a plus all over. I remember from the '60s that from my perception and friendship with him John Rowe Workman had a special role with the team and Coach Fullerton. He served Brown hockey well in that role.

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Coach Whittet's email of today noted something that I had not realized - Attendance at Meehan is the lowest in the ECAC "by a large margin" and among the worst in the NCAAs. While it may be difficult to get the locals out for a college hockey game due to other attractions in Providence (I noted last week that the Providence Bruins drew 10,000),the Athletic Department has to do something to get the student body out. This weekend especially!!

It's sad, but I think most people who want to go to a hockey game on a Friday or Saturday night are willing to pay the extra ten bucks to see the P-Bruins, or would rather see PC play because Hockey East is presumably much better hockey to watch (it's not; at least not when PC is playing).

Like Brendan has said, the only thing that can really put butts in seats in this town is a winner. When Yann Danis was here and the team was merely above .500, Meehan would have very good crowds on almost any given night. Plenty of students came and made noise and supported their team. But there simply is no reason for a casual fan or student to go to a Brown game and show any sort of vested interest in the team right now, because they aren't winning.

Hopefully, this changes in the next two years. Not only is losing depressing, but watching every game in small arena that's barely a third full is just embarrassing.

Who appointed you credibility arbiter?

You seem to think that the locker room is some kind of sacrosanct space.

Get a life!

Re: Brown Hockey 2011-2012 - The Future Is Now

Now THAT was a spirited hockey game. That's the kind of heart I want to see. If we play like we did in the 2nd and 3rd tonight, we should have no problem getting 4-5 points from the remaining 3 games. Great comeback, and great to see Jack Mac getting his 100th career points. 1st Brown player since Les Haggett!

A good crowd as well 1900! Hopefully with Senior Night tonight, Meehan will be full.

Yes, it looked like the student section was absolutely packed on the online stream. The football team was out in full force (I identified them as the guys without shirts :) ). Season ticket side looked reasonably full too. I'm hoping to make it to tonight's game; I've been bed-ridden with the awful norovirus going around, but feel a lot better so far today. Crossing my fingers! I want one last chance to see Jack Mac and Bobby Farnham before they graduate. Hopefully we somehow draw Harvard for the playoffs so I can at least go see us on the road, if I'm not able to make it tonight.

If the shirtless guys were out last night for Harvard, they will definitely be there tonight. Last 2 home games with Dartmouth were quite the spectacle with that crew sitting behind the Dartmouth bench. Some may say they were overboard, but it seemed like good, clean fun. Against Yale in December, they may have, however, gone too far.

KDiff, I too am recovering from illness. First time I will have missed a Senior Night since 2000. Was the videocast a worthwhile purchase?
