Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

Now you're just posting completely false information. Yale has one of the largest and Cornell actually has the smallest endowment per capita. Neither are reflected in hockey ranks. Stop looking for excuses.

Once again looks like excuses as to why the 10-0 and why there were about 100 shots given up in two games. How could you even expect to win giving up 40-50 shots a game??? What is going to happen when Digit Murphy can not get a goaltender to come to the program, 15-0 games????

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

IMHO the lack of Brown success, compared to Cornell and Harvard is all about recruiting.

Let's look at Cornell. As part of the rebuild they recruited the following:

Johnston, considered the best '89 out of Canada
Rougeau, considered the best '90 D out of Canada, TC U18 Team Captain
Mazotta, considered the best '90 Goaler out of Canada.
Jenner, considered the best '91 out of Canada, TC U18 Team Captain
Fortino, considered the best '91 D out of Canada, TC A letter
Campbell, top scorer and best '92 F out of Canada
Saulnier, along with Campbell one of the top '92 players out of Canada
Fulton, Considered best '93 forward out of Canada

So while Doug may very well be a very good coach, IMHO the recruiting is THE FACTOR that led to the current success at Cornell. It was kick started with the landing of Johnston. One of the reasons she went to Cornell was cause she already had two siblings there.

Similary Harvard tends to recruit top talent ahead of Brown. They have the bigger name and more money to offer. If you ask any Bostonian where they prefer to go to school, Harvard is the answer for most.

Brown has one player who was part of the Team USA U18 team and one player who played Ontario U18. Day and night compared to the top talent walking into the door at the Harvards and Cornells of the world.

So the question becomes. How do you start attracting better recruits to Brown. IMHO that would go much further than just changing a coach. Coach can only do so much with a limited talent pool. Some of you posting on here seem to be aware of the inner workings at the Brown admin and AD department. I'd challenge those that have that knowledge to come up with suggestions on how to recruit better talent to Brown. That is much more productive than lambasting coaches.

Greetings, Just got back from Ski Country....Aruba
I've been saying all along that recruitment at Brown has been the problem. The girls come for the visit and then turn their sights to the other Ivies. Obviously Coady, the product of a nationwide search (NOT) has to shoulder some of the blame here but even if he were on his best day, girls don't want to play for either Digit or Coady. The word is out there and no amount of recruiting gonna change that. The hockey world is a small world and their reputations precedes them. Speaking of Digit, anyone know what she was doing on the bench - er, under the bench - yesterday? Nevermind, I'll ask her myself.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

OnMAA makes a valid point. Certain schools have draws that get the snowball rolling with recruiting. In Cornell's case it was a personal situation. Harvard and Dartmouth have their own unique (within the Ivy League) draw and any women's hockey player who wants a top engineering school should seriously look at Cornell.

And on the financial aid front (for those who qualify), Brown has the smallest endowment of the bunch and the generally the weakest FA offers (all FA in the Ivy League is need-based).

Back when Digit was at her peak, the other Ivies hadn't gotten the traction to overcome her headstart in having a competitive team. Now that they have established their hockey teams and Digit has had a stumble (every coach has one eventually), getting that recruiting momentum back while lacking the school advantages of Harvard, Dartmouth, and Cornell is a steep hill to climb.

notfromaroundhere - ya, that's obvious! What were you doing under the bench yesterday. I heard you were practicing a victory dance and you fell between the bench and the boards? Is that correct?

Your lack of reading comprehension (much like irishbirdie's), truly amazes me. In my post, I was discussing how schools like Harvard, Dartmouth, and Cornell have advantages that draw more top players to them. Cornell has used it's connection a key recruit had to draw in even more talent. I also mentioned that it had an engineering program that is unmatched in the Ivy League that also could be used as a draw for certain players. Harvard and Yale do have larger endowments (even on a per student - not per capita - basis. Yikes, I hope you aren't a Brown student as you could do some serious damage to the school's reputation with your command of the English language). And funny how you didn't bring up Yale's not using its advantage and calling for coaching change there as well. May as well throw in Princeton too!

My point was that Brown lost its inital edge (being early to investing in a women's hockey program before the others) and now is looking for something to overcome the advantages that some of the other Ivies have used to move ahead of Brown. I'm not making excuses.

fan007, you do seem to enjoy making up stupid things. Why don't you go back to Aruba.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

This is funny! LOL, Highly irrelevant, since a beer bellied 70 year old who knows what he/she is doing can still make an effective coach....but FUNNY! :)

Funny that you bring up beer bellied 70 year olds. I went to the IHL (team disbanded and league sinced absorbed into the AHL) game where Gordie Howe (then 70) took a shift on the ice. He even delivered a check. And he hid his beer belly very well.

Likewise....Did you read your own post? You spew out your facts; you criticize another poster's command of the English language and then you proceed to not use commas while listing a series of Ivy League schools. Please!!!!! Now that's stupid.
So what's the answer to my question: Were you practicing a victory dance or were you retrieving your gum?

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

"So, you have inside information indicating that this year's freshman class doesn't want to be at Brown????

Are you going to name names?

I think you are full of it. I have connections with at least 2 of the incoming class and last I heard, no complaints. And I think Newbiebear's daughter is probably happy there as well, based upon his participation. Actually, I'm sure you are full of it. You are just trying to stir the pot."
-notfromaroundhere

Just to clarify I said nothing about freshmen. There are people in every class not happy with the current coaching circumstances.

And I wouldn't consider this inside information. But then again, if you only just know of two kids on the team then I guess all information is inside information to you.

Typographical error of comma omission corrected. I'm not impressed by your misuse of a semicolon to join 2 sentences. Then you repeat your question that makes an incorrect assumption about my identity and location. Would you feel better if I asked you when you stopped drinking too much?

Feel better? Not at all. It doesn't change a thing between us. But I can think of someone else to whom you should direct that question.

When you made your insinuation that all is not as it seems, it was replying to my discussion of the FRESHMEN on the team. If you read my posts CAREFULLY before replying, you will avoid making statements that say something that they shouldn't. Your misposting of this type can cause DRAMA which is the enemy of all teams.

And I will agree that there are kids in every class that are not happy with the coaching situation. This is true at most schools and is hardly a news flash. The reality of playing for any coach is different from the salesmanship that occurs during recruiting. Some kids grow up and learn this life lesson. Others figure it out after about 3 or 4 jobs after college.

Lady, you must be on crack. I said nothing of that sort.

Notfromaroundhere - ya, that's obvious! IMHO, you are not a good coach. This is not about the recruits or the veterans on the team. They've earned their place on the roster. They need a coach who appreciates their ability and is able to manage them as a team. You have not been successful for the past couple of years. It's time to hang up your chromosomes, collect your gum under the bench and be gone. If you truly respect your players, you will do that for them - and take Coady with you.

fan007,

Clearly you cannot read. I am not Digit. We had this discussion last year and your alzheimers must be kicking in. And you are only entertaining yourself, hcky85, and irishbirdie.

Can you not just have a normal conversation. You said "why don't you ask the kids who showed up this fall". I interpreted it as the kids who showed up this fall (excluding the kids who quit).

If you want to talk about something else besides grammar let me know. But no matter how bad my grammar may be, there's still only about 5 girls on the team who are happy. And this threads about them, not my english.

My "alzheimers must be kicking in"? That's not very PC of you, making a joke out of what you perceive to be my disability? We had this discussion last year? I don't remember posting here last year. Let me go check. BRB.
