Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

What I'm saying here is that Digit hasn't changed from the time she was winning to now. The women's hockey environment (more teams, more scholarships) has been discused and we cannot forget the type of support she gets (or doesn't get) from admissions. It is easy to say same coach different result, therefore coach has lost it. Very narrow focus here.

Would it make you happier if we said Digit can no longer keep up with D1 hockey?

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

"Since you wish the team nothing but success, I guess it must be personal about Digit. And since this is a Brown Bears team page, lets talk about the team and not Digit?"
-notfromaroundhere

Really the only person it seems to be personal about Digit with is you.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

A playing career is not the only "future" in hockey. With the growth of the female sport comes the growth of opportunities within it. A solid education and the experience of playing at the collegiate level, whether it be D1 or D111, is going to give players a lot of tools to use if they choose to stay in the sport at another level.

You bring up a very interesting point. It is worth noting that the Womens college ranks is littered with coaches and recruiters that played at or had their start at Brown. This is a testament to the skill set being developed while they are there.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

Brown Women Hockey's main problem is that the athletic department is not willing to invest the time, money, and effort to provide the team with the same resources that programs, such as Cornell, have to attract these top players. On top of this, the program does not have a coach with enough clout and respect inside the athletic department to push for the types of changes they need.

IMHO the lack of Brown success, compared to Cornell and Harvard is all about recruiting.

Let's look at Cornell. As part of the rebuild they recruited the following:

Johnston, considered the best '89 out of Canada
Rougeau, considered the best '90 D out of Canada, TC U18 Team Captain
Mazotta, considered the best '90 Goaler out of Canada.
Jenner, considered the best '91 out of Canada, TC U18 Team Captain
Fortino, considered the best '91 D out of Canada, TC A letter
Campbell, top scorer and best '92 F out of Canada
Saulnier, along with Campbell one of the top '92 players out of Canada
Fulton, Considered best '93 forward out of Canada

So while Doug may very well be a very good coach, IMHO the recruiting is THE FACTOR that led to the current success at Cornell. It was kick started with the landing of Johnston. One of the reasons she went to Cornell was cause she already had two siblings there.

Similary Harvard tends to recruit top talent ahead of Brown. They have the bigger name and more money to offer. If you ask any Bostonian where they prefer to go to school, Harvard is the answer for most.

Brown has one player who was part of the Team USA U18 team and one player who played Ontario U18. Day and night compared to the top talent walking into the door at the Harvards and Cornells of the world.

So the question becomes. How do you start attracting better recruits to Brown. IMHO that would go much further than just changing a coach. Coach can only do so much with a limited talent pool. Some of you posting on here seem to be aware of the inner workings at the Brown admin and AD department. I'd challenge those that have that knowledge to come up with suggestions on how to recruit better talent to Brown. That is much more productive than lambasting coaches.

I agree. The one thing Digit does seem to have a lot of is connections. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It’s definitely reason enough for a current Brown player or even an ex-player that wants to have a career in collegiate hockey to keep their mouths shut.

It would go much further than changing a coach. But most people think the best first step would be to change the coach and a lot of people think at this point and time that's really the only first step.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

Maybe prospects would find Brown more attractive if they'd just change their official color? Oh, uh.... neva mind!

That is a good question how do you start bringing more recruits to Brown. I begin to think it is by bringing in a new coach and a time to change. For many girls out there you are correct they look at the differences between the schools they are being recruited to, Harvard, Dartmouth, Brown, Cornell. So take those schools and obviously they are not bringing in the talent that others are, and you can't blame the players on the lack of quality recruiting to build a team. Cornell has done a phenomenal job in recruiting, Harvard great job, Dartmouth still as steady as always and it seems all Digit gets to her program is the "others". Maybe a new coach comes in and starts to sell the hockey program and not just the school they way it should be and build the program up instead of just settling for what they can get. No offense to the girls that are there because I am sure they do have all the talent and I know some who have played there in recent years and they were upset they were not being used in the right situations and I am sure that has not changed and it is apparent by the direction this program has gone. They are DI athletes who could be doing a lot better than what is shown and it can only go as far as Digit pushes them and if her effort is not there it is directly reflected in the performance on the ice. I remember watching Erica Kromm play before Brown and she was a heck of a defenseman and for her to be playing forward for Brown just really makes me believe it is being run like a youth program. Look at this weekend two IVY league schools no difference in the recruiting situations and beat 10-0 and outshot 97-61. Hard to argue the pure numbers against a weekend of being thoroughly beaten by other IVY schools. I hate seeing what is going on and Brown needs a change and it needs to occur soon!

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

I highly suggest you do this. Things aren't always what they seem.

So, you have inside information indicating that this year's freshman class doesn't want to be at Brown????

Are you going to name names?

I think you are full of it. I have connections with at least 2 of the incoming class and last I heard, no complaints. And I think Newbiebear's daughter is probably happy there as well, based upon his participation. Actually, I'm sure you are full of it. You are just trying to stir the pot.

That's fine. You think I'm full of it. I think you're a joke. We can leave it at that.

OnMAA makes a valid point. Certain schools have draws that get the snowball rolling with recruiting. In Cornell's case it was a personal situation. Harvard and Dartmouth have their own unique (within the Ivy League) draw and any women's hockey player who wants a top engineering school should seriously look at Cornell.

And on the financial aid front (for those who qualify), Brown has the smallest endowment of the bunch and the generally the weakest FA offers (all FA in the Ivy League is need-based).

Back when Digit was at her peak, the other Ivies hadn't gotten the traction to overcome her headstart in having a competitive team. Now that they have established their hockey teams and Digit has had a stumble (every coach has one eventually), getting that recruiting momentum back while lacking the school advantages of Harvard, Dartmouth, and Cornell is a steep hill to climb.

Our daughter is proud and happy to be at Brown. It is a lot of hard work combining school and hockey. It is not an easy task. She is motivated and determined to do well. Like any rookie, there is a lot of up and downs and learning lessons as part of the transition to college. We support her and her team 100%. I'm dissappointed that some others here choose to question our motives for choosing Brown. This was our daugthers choice and for others to question her (and our) motives, is simply appalling. None of your business.

I do not question your daughters decision it is a great school and she will receive a quality education and end up with a great job at the end of it. The thing I do question is the coaches dedication to turn this program seriously around. I know the assistant coaches have been a rotation because of money and that is very understandable in college hockey, no assistant regardless of men, womens, DI, or DIII get paid as they deserve. I ask you who is the one consistent factor that has been there and is still there. Like DarthBruno commented is this charity??? Why after such a drastic turn of events and this continual struggles of this program for years now are there not changes?? Until there is a change then I would suspect this will be the Brown we will be looking at that. Brown will continue to be a team where we will be more surprised when they win, then when they lose. I commend your daughter for putting up with what has occurred and wish her luck at Brown, she will receive a quality education while she is there.

notfromaroundhere: Is that the best you can do in the face of adversity? Name calling? Nobody comments about their discontent on the team when they're talking to the coach. Trust me, there is plenty of discontent. Newbiebear's daughter might very well be happy now that she's getting some playing time, but once she crosses hairs with you or Coady, she'll be on the fourth line. Don't you think all the prospects know that by now?

As well you should be supporting your daughter's efforts. Academically, I'm sure she'll do well at Brown. Athletically? Well, if she like treadmills, she'll be fine there too.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

I'd say she wouldn't be able to keep up with the girls on the ice for more than 2 or 3 shifts a period in a game.
This is funny! LOL, Highly irrelevant, since a beer bellied 70 year old who knows what he/she is doing can still make an effective coach....but FUNNY! :)

Now you're just posting completely false information. Yale has one of the largest and Cornell and Dartmouth actually have the smallest endowment per capita. Neither are reflected in hockey ranks. Stop looking for excuses.

Excuse me. Please read my post again and tell me what name I called anyone. And if you cannot read, please don't try to write posts as your lack of reading ability discredits anything you write.

As to your subtle suggestion that I am Digit (by saying that players don't comment about their discontent to the coach), that theory has been widely discredited by several other members here who know me personally. Of course, if irishbirdie keeps repeating incorrect information, eventually enough weak-minded people will start to believe it.

And by the way, I'm not facing adversity. The players on the ice - they face adversity trying to move a program forward. And they don't need folks like you talking down their choice of team.
