Enough on dismissals, blowouts, degradation (That is what they call it accross the big pond) and other musings.

Moving on to get back to our regularly scheduled Brown program. The Bears are traveling to the North Country as we speak to face the Saints and the Knights.

Here is the official preview:

Key after last weekend is to have a good showing this weekend.

Go Bears Go.

Yes, this is a good opportunity to see how much the young team has grown since the first games against the teams from the North Country. Last time around they picked up a point. Let's see if they can do better.

Re: Happy New Year to All

Re: Happy New Year to All

It's kind of a stretch to compare UNH to Brown here. The Wildcats were an NCAA team last year and for the four years before that. As bad as they've struggled this season, they've won 10 games. It's been four years since Brown won 10 in a full season. When a team does well for a long time, people's expectations are raised. Bitter former parents aside, you'd expect some discontent with the recent records. More troubling may be the apathy and disappearance of other long-time fans. For comparison, Flarrow is unhappy in the Union thread, but is still going to games and talking about the team. At this point, Brown is more like Union than UNH.

I was certainly not comparing the relative strength of UNH and Brown at this point in time, nor the extent of performance declines. Agree that UNH is still significantly better despite having an off year. Rather the comment was merely made in reference to the point that all it sometimes takes is an off year for any program, followed by a couple of weak recruiting classes as a result to make a big difference in the longer term success of that program, as happened with Brown in recent years. Several historically strong programs who have a long history of attracting Olympians and National U22 types, have not been so fortunate lately, and are seeing some recent softness. UNH could be considered among these. Only time will tell if this trend continues in future seasons as it has with Brown. But since elite players typically want to play on championship calibre teams, it can be hard to reclaim that past glory, and to do so usually takes 2-3 recruiting classes.

Conversely, weaker teams including Cornell and BU have managed to open the pipeline to elite talent, which can quickly reverse their fortunes as we have seen. So, I guess with the right coach in place who is also an A1 recruiter, it can certainly be done, regardless of team performance. It also suggests that there is far more competition between teams for top tier talent than there was a few years ago.

As we say in the old country "we done lost" this weekend. Someone above said that with all the D1 scholarship schools women simply aren't picking Brown. That's not true. In the last few years, Digit has driven out many of her own hand-picked athletes. That surely puts a chilling effect on quality players picking the Lady Bears. Who in their right mind would?

I want to point out that BU is only in its sixth varsity season, so it is not comparable to more established programs.

Your argument that "Digit has driven out many of her own hand-picked athletes" putting a "chilling effect" on quality players makes the assumption that this message is getting to recruits in the field and that it isnt drowned out by other information (players leaving other institutions because of their coaches - happens all the time). I'm not sure who is delivering this misinformation (unless some little irishbirdie tells them). I don't think your average ex-Brown player spends her time complaining about digit in hockey rinks all over North America.

As to who in their right mind would (pick the Lady Bears), it seems that this year's entering class is quite good from the reports on this forum. Are you calling them crazy?

I will grant you that the team "done lost" (as you might say) the weekend. A disappointment. Let's hope they move forward from this setback.

Listen Notfromaroundhere! I wish this year's team nothing but success but even you know that as long as Digit's on the bench, Brown will not get a Class A team together. Those days are gone. Word is definitely out around the rinks that you don't want to play for Digit. Bad news travels fast....

Since you wish the team nothing but success, I guess it must be personal about Digit. And since this is a Brown Bears team page, lets talk about the team and not Digit?

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

How long is this dawning of a new era with Brown Hockey occurring??? After a few olympians left the team 9 years ago this organization has done nothing but gotten worse and worse. They have won two games all year and one of those games was against a team that can't even beat DIII teams. I think it is about time Brown University looks at what is going on here and starts to makes some changes if they are going to ever turn the program around. It is evident here that the coach use to be a good coach at some point but like some they begin to wear out their welcome stop putting everything into it and it is evident from the play on the ice. Just look at the box scores if they did not have a goaltender these games would be blowouts and we would be talking if Brown Womens Hockey should even still have a program.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

Enough of all the naysaying and nonsense. It does not do the team any good, and it is certainly not what they need to get back on track to finish the season.

Let's focus on the games at hand this coming weekend. While last weekends end result was two losses, there were some good things to come out of the northern swing. One of the key forwards is starting to get in gear and that bodes well for the close of the season. On Saturday, the Bears battled back from a 3-0 deficit against Clarkson to tie it up in the third. A PP by Clarkson then did them in. On the good news front, Brown scored three PP goals during the weekend and five goals in two games. Offensive numbers not seen in months.

On to the games against Ivy League rivals Harvard and Dartmouth in the comfy confines of the Meehan Rink on Hope Street. While the competition will formidable, lets hope for more positive signs out of a young and hard working Brown team.

Go Bears....Those more directly involved with the team are all behind you.

As long as Digit remains the coach, this team is going nowhere. Nothing personal! She's just not effective anymore and it is hurting the team. That certainly is a proper subject for this forum. Like it or leave it.

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

Newbiebear, just because some of us disagree with you about the effectiveness of a coach who can't buy a win, it does not equate to lack of support for the team. As long as everyone sits back and does nothing, nothing will change. In that sense, I'm doing more for the team than you are. The women deserve more than their getting from their D1 experience. Just sayin'.....

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

I would say it is more support for the team looking for ways for this team to start winning and get on the right path. Right now it is pretty dead obvious dawn of a new era is not occuring. The team has won 1 ligit game and 1 against a team that can't even win against a DIII team, nothing against DIII. It is time for a change I want to see this program get back to where it was and it has been years since that has happened. Yeah I am sure the girls have all the talent in the world, but talent will only go as far as the coaching takes them and right now it is taking them to another 4 win season if that. Why would any girl after seeing 10 years of 4 wins max want to go to this program???

Re: Brown Bears 2010 - 2011 - Dawn of a new Era

You can't discuss the coach of the team that is the topic of the thread within that thread?

I didn't say you can't discuss the coach but was suggesting talking about the team and not the coach. We got irishbirdie's message about the coach already.

Yup, she is not effective as she hasn't scored a goal in years. Last I checked, the players play the game (and win it or lose it) and the coaches coach. Coaches recruit, but don't admit. We don't know if Digit is getting her top recruits admitted, as the school doesn't discuss those things including how many tips she gets. Nobody here discusses that aspect of a coach's ability to be successful. Let's face it, at many Ivy and NESCAC schools, the sports priorities (allocation of tips and other things) shift over the years and they often ask coaches to deal with less admissions help. The loss of 1 tip per year over 4 or 5 years can make a huge impact on the overall quality of any team.

What I'm saying here is that Digit hasn't changed from the time she was winning to now. The women's hockey environment (more teams, more scholarships) has been discused and we cannot forget the type of support she gets (or doesn't get) from admissions. It is easy to say same coach different result, therefore coach has lost it. Very narrow focus here.
