BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

Re: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

When he was working for CBS, Daniel Schorr reported that Barry Goldwater was vacationing in Germany and planning to hook up with "extreme right wing elements" (or something). We all know what extreme right wing elements in Germany are. It was a smear of epic proportions, but the kind of thing the legacy media served up day after day in service of their pal, LBJ.

Here's the relevant quote from Wiki:

CBS executives were not amused when Schorr reported—incorrectly—that Barry Goldwater was said to "travel to Germany to join-up with the right-wing there," and visit "Hitler's one-time stomping ground" in Berchtesgaden, immediately after he became the Republican nominee for president

Amazing what lengths the media go to for their favorites:rolleyes:

Re: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

Although respect is due for his passing, Daniel Schorr was a vicious, lying, left wing p----k, and a blight on "journalism." Anyone who would suggest that Barry Goldwater, United States senator, three star general in the Air Force reserve, who flew 50 missions over the hump in Burma, who desegregated the Arizona national guard and his own store (in the 40's), who paid for tens of thousands of dollars in long distance 'phone calls so GI's could speak to family members from Viet Nam and whose final bill in the senate (re-organizing the Joint Chiefs of Staff) passed 100-0 in tribute to him, was linking up with Nazis in Germany is beneath contempt.

I will not miss him and hope that any others who uncritically celebrate his "reporting" follow him to the hereafter immediately.

Given my age, I don't know his history as a reporter. (this period was not covered in HS history and for some reason life has gotten in the way of boning up on it)

I just know that I enjoyed listening to his commentaries on NPR. I am sorry if that offended you.

Keep an eye on Zsa Zsa Gabor....

Zsa Zsa now listed as critical-one of the dangers of a broken hip is the possibility of throwing a fat embolus off and it appears she may have done something like that during the surgery to repair her hip. There are reports she may have suffered a stroke while under anesthesia. Brent-you may have been way ahead of everyone on this one!

Why would you think I was offended? It's a free country, he was a good, although badly flawed reporter, who felt like it was important to inject himself into his stories (a proud CBS tradition carried on for years by Dan Rather). My points were these: his left wing biases included smearing a guy like Goldwater and any recounting of Schorr's life should include a reference to his biases. What do you know, the posting on the CBS website slathers him with praise for being on Nixon's enemys list but fails to mention his sly suggestion that one of the most respected senators in the last 50 years was going to link up with Nazis.

Understand that when Schorr was at CBS they were on top of the world in terms of the evening news. And there was no cable and no internet, so Americans basically got their news from their local papers and the three network newscasts. So if a lie or smear got into those newscasts, millions of Americans had nowhere to go to fact check the story. Seems to me, all the more reason for them to get it right.

Please note, I'm ignoring your juvenile efforts at sarcasm. Trust me, ignorance is not bliss.

Plus, she's been in a bad way since an accident put her in a chair. And there are also reports of a previous stroke. I'm afraid her outlook is grim.

I guess I thought you were offended because you stated that you
hope that any others who uncritically celebrate his "reporting" follow him to the hereafter immediately.

As far as your point about the quality of his reporting. I agree it is important that reporters get their facts right. I was just saying that I enjoyed listening to him. Not that I agreed with him or even used the information he provided as a basis for making decisions on issues.

Sorry for the childishness of my sarcasm, I'm lucky I'm able to type a coherent sentence these days. :o

Though there is a kernel of truth in my statement, I do NOT have time to remedy all the gaps in my education. I'm not sure that anyone has that kind of time.

I believe the key word in that sentence is "uncritically." And what I was referring to was the coverage of his career that would white wash this incident. I used to watch him all the time, even after the Goldwater smear, because in those days CBS, for all its faults, had the best evening newscast of the 3 networks. I just knew the "Nazi" reference was way way below the belt. And to the best of my knowledge, Schorr never apologized for it. Just as Jane Fonda has never apologized for her treasonous activities during the Viet Nam war.

Which is worse: an unconscionable smear of a great American or being unwilling or unable to recognize an indefensible wrong and apologize for it?

No reason why you should have known anything about this incident--that's why I'm here. I just didn't want this incident air brushed out of Schorr's obits, since it was so mean spirited and ugly.

I see your point. Thank you for explaining it more clearly.

It shouldn't have been that difficult to venture a guess on her. 93, and she fell and broke her hip?

1. Old
2. Broke a major bone, which could result in complications, as well as the fall itself.

;)

Re: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

you think stingley is in hell?!?

All souls rise up to heaven to be judged at the gates, and then either allowed in to Heaven, or sent down to Hell. In this case, the trip to Hell will be provided by the clearest example of why the soul is going there. And, apparently, justice will be served with a tire iron.
