Brexit 2: Happy Halloween

Sweet. Per NYT:

Paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland that have been lingering for decades are beginning to reorganize, driven by economic stagnation, political paralysis and the potential impact of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Brexit plan.

Awesome. We haven't had car bombings on the regular in Ireland in like 30 years. Yeah, let's bring that back.

Re: Brexit 2: Happy Halloween

Why is there so much unrest in the world right now? It just feels like everything is on a razor thin wire and it's ready to snap.

I have a general unease about the world right now. It's not good.

I’m gonna go with wealth inequality.

Re: Brexit 2: Happy Halloween

Ooops. https://www.businessinsider.com/brexit-will-cost-uk-more-than-total-payments-to-eu-2020-1

Brexit is likely to have cost the UK more than £200 billion in lost economic growth by the end of this year — a figure that almost eclipses the total amount the UK has paid toward the European Union budget over the past 47 years.

According to research by Bloomberg Economics, the cost of the UK's vote to leave has already reached £130 billion, with a further £70 billion likely to be added by the end of 2020.

...

That means the British economy is 3% smaller than it might have been if the UK had not voted to leave the EU.

Figures from the House of Commons Library put the UK's total projected contribution to the EU budget from 1973 to 2020 at £215 billion after adjusting for inflation.

That means the combined cost of Brexit since 2016 is likely to soon eclipse the total cost of the EU's budget payments, which were a central part of the Leave campaign's case for Brexit in the first place.

After Prime Minister Boris Johnson's election victory in December, the UK is set to leave the EU on January 31. But business confidence and investment has dipped, and annualized economic growth has fallen to about 1% from 2%.

I forgot. What actually happens at midnight? Do they dynamite the chunnel or something?

As an indication of how irrelevant the UK is, the change happens at the stroke of midnight in Brussels, 11pm in London.

Nothing actually happens of consequence. The UK is no longer part of the EU parliament and some other procedural changes, but the transition period continues until 31 December. No matter what Brexiteers say Brexit is not done. It won't even be done 1 January 2021. There is still the slight matter of trade deals and the like, which will take the better part of this decade.

The big change is that UK citizens will be stripped of EU citizenship in a few minutes. I can't wait until we start seeing Brits on Twitter complaining that when they go on holiday they no longer have access to the expedited service afforded EU citizens and they need to wait in line like the rest of us.

Re: Brexit 2: Happy Halloween

The Brexiteers did promise in 2016 that as soon as the UK left the EU the benefits would start rolling in...any time now...

Re: Brexit 2: Happy Halloween

well the world certainly didn't end if that's any consolation :D

We don't know this. It could be like that Niven story* where the world has ended in the other hemisphere and we're just waiting for the sun to come up.
