Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

So it's supposed to be today or tomorrow, right? I can't take this much longer. :p

Position-by-position from jsonline:
<a href="http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/entire-brewers-rotation-returns-9v48jgc-139664933.html">Starting rotation</a>
<a href="http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/139774723.html">Relievers</a>
<a href="http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/gamel-gets-in-shape-for-shot-at-first-jq49ljt-139930243.html">First base</a>

Hey remember Mark Rogers? He's <a href="http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/139771413.html">feeling great after surgery</a> but still serving his suspension (one week left).

Mike Cameron announced his retirement. He will always hold a special place in my heart as the man who brought us Untucking and angered the St. Louis Cardinals. :)

I'm going to tell a big fat stinkin' lie. I saw this jsonline headline coming.
"Ryan Braun exonerated in drug test investigation"

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

heard on the way home from work. very relieved.

MLB should be ashamed at the breach of privacy. Now they say the "vehemently" disagree with the decision - of course they do, because it brings the whole drug testing process into question. They're certainly not going to admit something went wrong in this case. I think they should shut up and let this one go, because if it hadn't been leaked, nobody would have known about it, and they don't have a leg to stand on. They want to keep claiming Braun is guilty - haven't they done enough damage already?

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

ESPN's magpies have also said that the technicality that Braun may have gotten off on was regarding the courier who delivered the sample didn't deliver it when he was supposed to, because he thought the building was closed (on Saturday night) and took it there either on Sunday or Monday morning (I wasn't listening as closely by the time they got to this part).

Take that for what it's worth, and I have no idea how much that is worth. At this point in the game it doesn't matter. Braun will play a full season of baseball this year.

Well, here's video of the sample finally being delivered... I see no problems here...

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

"According to one of the sources, the collector, after getting Braun's sample, was supposed to take the sample to FedEx/Kinkos for shipping but thought it was closed because it was late on a Saturday. As has occurred in some other instances, the collector took the sample home and kept it in a cool place and possibly refrigerated it. Policy states that the sample is supposed to get to FedEx as soon as possible.

I think that's the quote I was alluding to earlier.

Again, grain of salt wherever necessary.

If the official took it to his HOUSE, I think the union would have (and should have) raised a HUGE issue with MLB if that didn't get overturned. Who knows what happened to it there? If they're unable to prove that it wasn't tampered with, or that it was even Braun's - then it should be overturned. I honestly can't believe MLB is squawking about this. I think that's a lot more than just a "technicality" - it brings into question the validity of the sample. Is it worth ruining his reputation and marring his career when no one knows what actually happened to it?

and to anyone who says the official should be trusted not to tamper with the sample - I'd wager the person that leaked the story is supposed to be trustworthy as well.

Once the chain of custody is not properly followed, the result is irrelevant. Honestly, based on whats been said about what happen, I'm amazed this result wasn't thrown out long before it went to arbitration.

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Many things about the Braun case are disappointing to me.

1) Innocent until proven guilty isn't an American value anymore. Once ESPN leaked this story in December Braun is guilty regardless of any future findings. This is just like the Duke Lacrosse story in that sense. Oops sorry you were innocent, i'm sure no one will remember we smeared your name for a year.

2) MLB Appeal system. A 3-person panel, really? Why bother having a Union person and a MLB person on the panel if they will always (and they have) vote in favor of their employers. If they have to be on the panel, extend it to 5 or 7 people. Completely ridiculous!

3) Braun testing positive in the first place. In this day and age of steroids in baseball, players can't let themselves get in to these situations. Don't put anything on to or in your body that hasn't been checked by MLB in some way. The risk isn't worth it.

4) The testing process itself. Why are players tested on a Friday if you are relying on a shipping service to send samples? At least if it was Thursday, it would be one night in a fridge. Why are we letting testers take them home? Shouldn't there be a secure facility, like a hospital where it can be held?

I could go on...

1)One thing to remember in this case is that Braun was found not guilty...not necessarily innocent. I think it was very silly of MLB to publicly disagree with Shyam Das. These proceedings are only public because someone did not keep their mouth shut, now they have egg on their face. They should just shut up and take it.
2) I completely agree, I feel like it should be a 3 person panel of independent arbiters, or if the union and players rep must be there, it should be at least 5 people.
3) Because of the chain of custody issue, you can't make the claim that Braun himself tested positive "in the first place."
4) I don't see any issue with a player being tested on Friday as long as it is shipped on Friday for saturday delivery. I'm assuming that the hold time on these samples is long enough to allow for it to sit in a refrigerator at the sampling facility until monday. I trust the lab to do its job and follow procedure, if it can't be trusted than we have much bigger issues.

I think I can say tested positive in the first place, only because Braun never disputed the positive result or the science. Didn't he also at one point say it was because of medication?

I think Braun is a smart guy and knows that disputing the science would of resulted in him losing his appeal. Chain of custody was his only viable avenue of defense.

I believe the panel used the word "innocent", and the media is using "not guilty". I could be wrong on that though.

I have no idea if Braun is innocent or not. But I like the guy and hope he is being honest, and not just getting off.

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Hell, shouldn't MLB have an arrangement with a local laboratory to do the testing? Why bother with shipping it in the first place?

I think two things play into that. Its probably cost prohibitive to set up 30+ lab agreements and second I believe the Olympic testing lab in Montreal is considered the best of its kind.

eta: Also imagine the varying quality of labs around the country. Players could argue since its not a single lab, there is inconsistent result quality based on location. That would be a nightmare.

Braun actually didn't say anything except that he was innocent - never provided details. It was everyone else that was talking about it, rumors, sources, etc - so nobody knows what the facts truly are, except the independent aribtrator.

I agree he isn't necessarily innocent - but he IS not guilty. An awful lot of people assumed guilt right away without knowing anything about it. I think the best we can say now is we'll never know for sure - but that's a hell of a lot better than saying he's guilty.

I think it's interesting that Braun has every right to be very, very angry with this situation - the lack of privacy, MLB's handling of the actual decision - and he hasn't said anything publically to give that impression (of course, I also think he works very hard at cultivating his image, so he's probably not going to blow his top). It'll be interesting to hear what he has to say today.

I am really disappointed in the way MLB is handling this. It feels like they're just piling on what was already a bad situation.

I'm anxiously waiting for an apology column from Phil Rogers of the Chicago Trib, because he was over-the-top nasty.

Michael Hunt in today's JS: http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/140244093.html

Also, I'd just like to say Eric Byrnes is a ****ing idiot. What the hell is that guy doing on TV? He said yesterday that he would've leaked the results, too. Good lord. A former PLAYER.

Re: Brewers 2011 - Yo...Marcum for the post-season or jen may get a little Greinke

Wow, listening to Dan Patrick Show right now, if you have time, listen to the first hour of today's show when it posts later.

Dan Patrick: "When the guy who took Ryan Braun's sample and didn't ship it until Monday was put before the arbitration panel, he was asked to state his name. He didn't say anything for 37 seconds and couldn't look at Ryan Braun." Obviously this guy screwed up and is embarrassed to be involved in all of this.

EDIT: Dan Patrick also stating the gentleman that held Ryan Braun's sample too long is a Cubs fan...

now there's word that the official left it on his counter in a Tupperware container, and that Braun offered to take a DNA test to make sure it was his sample, and MLB refused. Whether this is all true or not is subject to debate, but it will be a very interesting press conference.
