Re: Bracketology

Here's what's just occurred to me tonight.

Minnesota, as of now, is tied in 24th place in PWR. If the WCHA finishes in any similar order to what it is now, they will be a TUC facing a top-15 team in the first round of the playoffs.

Given that situation, whatever team faces Minnesota is in a bind. By winning as favorites, Team X would knock UMN out of TUC and lower their own (as well as the other WCHA teams) winning percentage against TUC.

Am I that far off-base here?
No, but any team counting on Minnesota staying a TUC to make or break their season probably isn't very good anyway.

Re: Bracketology

I think you are accurate, Minnie needs a couple wins to stay relevant to the rankings. Unfortunately, I think they will take 3 points from Sconni at the end. Hopefully, they will also take a couple from CC or UMD.

I highly doubt this. Wisconsin is most likely going to be battling for 1st place in the conference, while Minnesota will be in 7th/8th place range and will be on the road no matter what. The teams hate each other, yes, but Wisconsin is too good this year to let the Gophers take 3 points from them on the final weekend. Throw in the fact that one of the games is at the Target Center, which is hardly home ice advantage, and a Sconnie sweep/3 points is the most likely scenario.

I wasn't thinking of that--the top 6 WCHA teams are pretty solidly entrenched in making the tournament.

I was more thinking that this is a bit messed-up, in which a team can win the first round of the conference playoffs and in doing so, lower their ranking.

Although in the end I think they'll make it, I'd hardly say North Dakota is "solidly entrenched" in making the tournament. They're the last team in.

My point still stands. I think you, like many others, are overly concerned about what the Math does with the bubble teams. Scream to the hilltops and switch to KRACH then, but I think you like many others are worried about nothing and screaming at the wind.

So solid, your prediction lasted less than 36 hours, and UND didn't even play. ;)

Couldn't agree more. Any method that can improve your selection status with a loss is fundamentally flawed.

Re: Bracketology

My version is slightly different:

The PWR:

1 Miami
2 Denver
3 Wisconsin
4 St. Cloud State
5 Bemidji State
6 Ferris State
7 Boston College
8 Colorado College
9 Cornell
10 Minnesota-Duluth
11 New Hampshire
12 Vermont
13 Massachusetts
14 Michigan State
15 Maine

Code:
[B]Albany Worcester Fort Wayne	St. Paul[/B]
Wisconsin St Cloud Miami Denver
Ferris St Bemidji CC BC
UNH Vermont Cornell UMD
Mich St Mass AHA Champ	Maine

To reduce flights for #1 seeds just swap the Albany and St. Paul brackets:

Code:
[B]Albany Worcester Fort Wayne	St. Paul[/B]
Denver St Cloud Miami Wisconsin
BC Bemidji CC Ferris St
UMD Vermont Cornell UNH
Maine Mass AHA Champ	Mich St

Last in: Michigan State, Maine
Last out: North Dakota, Union
Dropped out: North Dakota
Replaced by: Maine

The TUC line:

Code:
21	Mass.-Lowell	0.5208
22	Boston U	0.5182
23	Alaska 0.5171
24	Minnesota	0.5170
25	St. Lawrence	0.5151
---
26	Northeastern	0.5140
27	N Michigan	0.5133
28	Nebraska-Omaha	0.5091
29	Notre Dame	0.5090
30	Ohio State	0.5082

JD, I don't think the PWR you used were updated because you have Michigan State as a #3 seed and they dropped to #4 after the loss.

Wow, at the moment HE has same number of teams in as WCHA; who would have thunk it? And, ECAC same as CHA and AH.

Re: Bracketology

Has anyone looked at the individual comparisons lately?
What is up with UAF?
Today's game between UW and UMi just got a little more important for the "common opponents" section as well as the SCSU vs UAA game.

I would imagine its because they have a tie against Miami and a win against Michigan. Michigan is 1-0 against WI and Miami is 2-0 against SCSU. Just a guess but preliminary would suggest that.

More along that line, Boston and Alaska making huge leaps with big wins last night. Boston jumping all the way up to 20 in the PWR and Alask coming in at 19. Both were 28 and 27 respectively last week. CCHA race just got tighter. Price I see on yours that you have Alaska at 23, when I looked around 10:30 they werent on there. Them moving up game Miami two more TUC games, you find it late? Big games CCHA wise tonight, if Michigan can upset Wisco that might jump them in. Alaska and MSU play either team win it jumps them up or down. Lake st has a chance to jump into conversation at Miami, and if NMU can beat Ferris it might slid them into a TUC and drop Ferris to a 3 seed.

The Alaskan home-and-home series at the end will also have a big impact on UW and SCSU's common opponents section.

Well BU only moved up to 22 (from 28th in the RPI prior to the first round of the Beanpot), but I'm sure you're still not happy to see another team with that "B" word on the jersey creeping closer to the tournament field.:p

Nah, they are just teasing you by getting your hopes up.

Wouldn't Bemidji State, being about a four hour bus ride and the top #2 seed go to St. Paul?

Bemiji should play in the bracket with #4 St. Cloud. #2 Denver and #3 UW have a higher preference, and UW is also a bus ride whereas Denver has to fly anywhere.

edit: it does make more sense to have two Minnesota teams play in St. Paul for gate revenue and local rivalries.
I would not mind having UW go east to favor that matchup.

I like your switch of Bemidji and Ferris (for attendance, I presume), but would the committee bother to also switch UNH and Vermont as you have? I don't have a good enough memory to know if they've done that in the past or if they would just leave them with their natural 1-seeds. Anyone recall?
