BouncyBall 2013/2014

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

I typically don't understand basketball refereeing to begin with but I was absolutely befuddled by what I saw in the Wisconsin-Arizona game.

Free throws are exciting?

Refs made that a boring second half.

Luckily, Dekker hit some big threes to allow us to yell at the TV.

Go Notre Dame, I guess.

Notre Dame looks scary.

While I agree that you want to avoid Kentucky, Notre Dame is playing really well the past several weeks.

Whatever. You wanna win a title, you gotta beat whomever you play.

Kentucky survives Notre Dame.

I don't know if it's possible to choke as a prohibitive underdog, but if you can, Notre Dame did so down the stretch.

They should've shot earlier on their last full possession to ensure a 2-for-1 situation. Then the last shot the guy was triple teamed from about the half court line on. You have 3-4 seconds still at that point, dump it off to an open guy.

During that stretch, a) I think the difference in minutes caught up with ND, and b) Kentucky started playing defense like the #1 defense in the country.

I don't disagree, but basically nobody in college does (including guys like Izzo who are generally acknowledged as the best in the business).

MUCH easier said than done. I don't think UK could have defended that much better than they did.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

The first half of last night's [Monday night] women's NCAA game between Dayton and UConn was really amazing. Dayton had no fear and took the game right at them, and actually led at the half 44-43.

It was fast-paced, end-to-end, toe-to-toe action. Really fun to watch. None of the "clutch and grab" defense at all, crisp passing to the open shooter, etc.

If you get ESPN3, I think this link should connect....

Geno later commented on the state of the men's game.

I agree with him that the state of play needs to be better, but to call it behind the times? Look in the mirror Geno, women's basketball has the parity of La Liga. There are maybe five teams at most each season with a reasonable chance at the tournament. In that regard, they're still stuck in the Wooden era.

It does sound like the men's game will be improving soon though. They're experimenting with a 30 second shot clock and bigger block/charge circle for the NIT.
