Got it. I read it as house around Boston somewhere to take over.

Phew.

This should be a very interesting process.

I'm stunned but elated. While I and others have wanted this for some time now, in a weird way, I never thought I'd see the day.

Most importantly, for me, it stops Parker from falling to a respect level that would overtake his legacy. The man has done more for BU Hockey than anyone else, and the positives will outweigh the negatives when all is said and done. Close followers will always know that he probably hung on too long, but the off-ice issues that got most of the press the last couple years will mot be lasting memories.

Now I know how those people in Eastern Europe felt in November of 1989. ;)

Seriously though, coach Parker thanks for everything over a great career. Yes it was long past the time to go but now we can reflect on the career as a whole instead of the last dozen years. I find the timing to be very curious. Not sure what's up with that but I guess it'll all come out eventually.

he has said he wasn't making a grand tour type of retirement where it would be known and then get a rocking chair in every stop along with way. first business day after end of regular season is the way i'd expect to have heard it.

I don't think the timing is surprising. He anyways said he would not do a farewell tour. I figure it was one of two things that finally made this happen. Either the school told him he had to step down based on the findings of the task force, but they gave him one more year to make it less obvious. Or, the stretch of games in January and February made him realize he just doesn't have it anymore. Second fourth-place finish in the Beanpot in three years. With both those losses being the second time BU lost to those teams which were both pretty terrible teams that couldn't beat anyone else. Throw in the Myron leaving, Coyle blossoming, and it may have finally clicked.

I wrote on here a long time that it wouldn't surprise me if he announced his retirement at the end of the regular season. Very few believed it.

He is smart enough to see the hand writing on the boards. The motivation wasn't the same, players were leaving or getting bounced, and we started to see more and more empty seats at Agganis. It is a good time to make a smart decision, and let's give him credit for doing just that.

As poor as many have complained that this season has been, we finished two points out of first place. Two points!
So while the program has not been where people would like it to be, it also hasn't been that bad. And as I have written before, eight other Hockey East schools would gladly have traded for our success over the past decade, even though it pales in comparison to where BU was in the 1960s, 70s and 90s.

David Quinn. Mike Sullivan. John Hynes.

Anyone other than one of those three would come as a shock.

Unless Mike Lynch "pulls a Peter Roby" and hires Mike Eruzione out of the Development Office, and hands him the keys with no head coaching experience.

Brian Durocher? He's doing a great job with the women, and I'd expect him to stay right there.

Well said. It's no secret to the regulars on this board that the number of loyal fans who were ready for a change grew significantly this season. No doubt he is aware of what is said on these boards, at least through some sort of buffer.

I hope the team uses this to keep their recent winning ways going.

I hope it is Sullivan. Quinn would be a very close second for me. Hynes would not be disappointing either. But anyone else would be to me.

I think Sullivan would be an ideal college coach, especially at BU. He played 4 years at BU (my four years, incidentally), which included a generally disappointing freshman season (pre-season#1, barely finished over .500) two lean years, and a return to glory and the FF as a senior. He just about saw it all during those 4 years. I think he would be a very convincing recruiter - his time in the NHL as a defensive forward continues the BU tradition of developing strong 2-way players - and being a one-time coach of the hometown NHL team doesn't hurt when recruiting locally. Parker called him the best captain he ever had at the time, and short of Gilroy, I can't think of anyone since that would change that statement.

so the timing....

wouldn't it be beneficial to have someone on the thrown almost immediately? i don't want to see any kids in the pipe for sept2013 to have 2nd thoughts and listen to coaches making calls tuesday or wednesday.

i would imagine sullivan or quinn - as current assts - would be in a position to parachute out soon.

the most important thing tomorrow is the dance lynch and brownie will be making over the process.

Re: Boston University season thread - strike 3! last man there turn out the lights.

Quinn. Blasi. Hynes. Sullivan?

Someone with head coaching experience but isn't too old like Blais. A connection to the program would probably be helpful (Quinn, Hynes, Sullivan.) Very successful as a college coach and still young enough to coach for the next two decades (Blasi-I know he's not coming but it's a pipe dream.) Just neither of the assistants, please.

Someone who can recruit and coach and teach and relate to these children. Please.

At the same time, I don't want a Timmayyyyyyyyyyyy debacle.

Please get this right. Please please please.

From what I can tell, this was known. First, it was tweeted tonight by a Bowling Green guy that Buddy Powers apparently bought a house down in BG, presumably to retire to. That, plus if you read the tea leaves, that second ceremony honoring his 40th season, and bringing back players from his first ever team, plus the quip "I don't know if that comes with a pink slip,' in reference to getting the plaque. Jack most definitely did not wake up this morning, or a week ago, and decide to call it quits. I wouldn't even be shocked if this was known between him and Lynch going into this season.

I do because there's still hockey to be played. Thought he'd make the call after the team was finished or during the presentation two weeks ago.

Harry, the program has been bad. 0 Beanpots, 0 HE championships, 0 HE finals, 0 FF appearances in the last 4 years. That's a bad program and nobody would want to change places with us. I also question this was entirely his decision, as the notion put forth that he was told he'd have one more season after the task force recommendations came out makes more and more sense in hindsight.

I think the odds are very high that his replacement has already been offered the job and accepted. If it is Sullivan or Quinn, I don't know to what extent it is realistic to think that they may get announced before the NHL season ends.

The unknown is the only element that can hurt our recruiting, if you ask me. I mean, really, given what has transpired over the past few years, who thinks that Parker was still the main draw? Sure, he has the legacy, but I see our likelihood of retaining a guy like Eichel actually increasing if we name a good young coach like Sullivan or Quinn soon.
