Mook, find the % of capacity and compare between the two buildings...that will keep you busy ;)

i'm not the one trying to tell everyone that bu had full houses back in the good old days :p

Re: Boston University season thread - strike 3! last man there turn out the lights.

How could that place not be full every night during the mid 90s?

95 had a handful of sellouts (8). that year capacity was 3,806. but avg 3,528 in 15 games. the final rs game vs bc drew 3,589

bu never banged out wba. was silly to think they would fill a 6k+ barn. plus you doubled ticket prices. crappy concessions. raise parking from FREE to $$.

what did they expect?

I remember plenty of night Jim Prior saying "tonight's attendance is 3806" which was a sellout.

I assume they were counting tickets sold.

That being said, I agree with your other points.

Re: Boston University season thread - strike 3! last man there turn out the lights.

Is attendance dropping off?

the fanboy sections were about 1/2 and 1/3rd full. it was pretty pathetic. of course that was one of the worst hockey games of all time. so maybe the fans who have given up are the only smart ones.

i was surprised that Jack was happy with the effort because i dont know what game he watched. BU mailed it in from the get go.

Re: Boston University season thread - strike 3! last man there turn out the lights.

the average fan at WBA was definitely more of a hockey fan than the average HAA fan is.

And that's the point. As we're seeing with the "pink hats" at Fenway, once a team is no longer at the top, the fair-weather, casual fans disappear. As I have mentioned previously, sports are a tough go at BU as it is. Due to the large international population, 99% of whom could care less about hockey (if they even know we play it), the transition from a commuter school made up of mostly local people and the fact that there is no big time football program to attract any sort of regular attention to sports, we are now seeing the "fallout." It was a stretch to think we could get 6,700 people anyway at ANY time (except against BC - which, by the way, in the years I had my tickets were the ONLY games to completely sell out). So I'm not really sure what people are surprised about. We're getting the same number of people that we got at WBA. Why would anyone think the population that they are drawing from would be bigger than it was when the team was actually EXCITING to watch???

Fascinating listening to Bernie and Tom. For the first time I can ever remember, there is almost a bit of "disgust" in Tom's voice. He's saying (and I'm paraphrasing), "They look around and see that the team is hurting and say 'I'm just going to do what I do - what can they do anyway?'" It's kind of a subtle way of saying that the coach has lost the team. And he's always reiterating that "this line has to play better" and "they have to work harder." They have to "grind it out." But the most telling comment was "this line doesn't even know how to play a basic forecheck - there's three guys down beneath the goal line."

I don't feel like looking it up, but when was the last time BU was shut out back to back?

About face. Now Tom's doing the "circle the wagons act." "Thank God we build the great tradition in the 50s 60s and 70s, but it's not like it used to be. I'm sorry, but they're weren't 34 difficult games back then...I don't care what anyone says. There isn't continuity at the big-time programs...you win a national championship and get raided, it's hard to rebuild. The players hear all the complaining, "First class to never win the Beanpot, first time this happened, first time that happened. Players start leaving and there isn't anyone to take their place right away. Lowell has continuity - they rarely have players leave between their freshman and senior years."

So I knew they were getting ready to blow and finally Tom did and went on his between-periods rant.

I think we all get it (and many of us alluded to this before anyway). You can't ALWAYS win and it IS more difficult to go all the way now (more teams in the tournament, talent spread out, more parity). We understand that. But that's not really the point, is it? It's the EFFORT (or lack of it) and the INDIFFERENCE that is upsetting! Not sure they really got the memo yet. So whatever prompted Tom's reference to "everybody starts complaining" - he missed the point.

You make some valid points but college sports in Boston are a tough sell, period. Go to a BC basketball or football game and there are a lot of empty seats when those teams aren't playing well. Everybody loves a winner. Going to root for your alma mater is supposed to be fun. Watching your team not win and not even try is not fun. That is why attendance is down. This isn't Lincoln, Nebraska. When the home team isn't doing well there's plenty of other things to do in this town. I have had season tickets for years and may not renew. I'm unhappy with the product on and off the ice and might vote with my feet. Prices are getting out of hand as well. Why do these tickets cost so much more than any of the other three schools that play D1 hockey? Doesn't make sense.

I don't know...I just think that they let hockey "run itself" because it's the highest visibility program here and the administration doesn't really get involved (is clueless). I don't really think it's on their radar. Until something dramatic happens it will just be business as usual. It's either that or they're so arrogant and think that "Well, WE'RE BU so the prices are justified." But, that's really the same thing, isn't it (cluelessness)?

Anyone else getting those emails from the Red Sox desperate for us to buy tickets? I agree with the premise and unfortunately in this decade the town has been spoiled. Years ago it was about supporting your team through thick and thin, and it made us New Englanders. We lived in a part of the world that dealt with heartbreak, horrible weather, and the Patriots.

They should have kept football

I just found the NU season ticket form. It was a year old but you could get a seat behind the goal for $135 or a premium ticket between the blue lines for $195. And I pay what? $900 for two seats to watch this horror show? It's borderline hubris on the part of the school to do that. How much are season tickets at Conte?
