Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

Meh, once was enough for me. Virtually no good seats at Fenway for a hockey game.

Bomber, last time BC played in the GLI was 2003. Last time for BU was the year before that. Just a reference...

Yeah... every 5 or 6 years maybe... for the novelty. Next year would be too soon for me to get very excited about it.

Oh yeah. I vaguely remeber BU's appearance. They won, if I'm recalling correctly. Anyone?

No more on hockey at Fenway. Once was enough. Been there, done that, done.

Next year, no. 2019-2020? Sure. The novelty of these gimmick games is wearing thin.

It was the 2002-3 season. BU beat MSU in the semi and Michigan in the final. It gave the team a kick start for a good second half of the season.

Absolutely. We had what were "reasonably" good seats and all we could do is watch the game on the video screen. You couldn't see anything on the other side of the red line. And first of all, the rink was only put down because of the NHL Winter Classic - I'm sure they're not going to go through all that expense for a college hockey game. And mpereira - the BEANPOT?? Are you kidding me? Crazy atmosphere? Did you GO to the game at Frozen Fenway? Because what I saw were a bunch of freezing cold people with their hands in their pockets (and anyplace else they could put them to keep their fingers from breaking off) who went to the game so that, 50 years from now, they could say there were "there." The only thing "crazy" about it is that I was crazy to even go and think I would enjoy it!

looks like Frozen Fenway could be making a return next year. Let's hope they're smart enough to put the only undefeated mens college hockey team at Fenway back there for this haha. Possible future Beanpot location as well which would just be crazy atmosphere

maybe they can play the consolation game there again. then they can have the women's beanpot final be at 5 on the 2nd monday. this is the first great idea you've had.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

It was brutal, something that was nice to be there but don't want to do again.

First of all the quality of play was crap. Second, had to watch the game on a big screen. No thanks.

Being in Fenway when it was snowing was pretty surreal though.

I certainly hope that I am still alive in another 49 years, but...I would not be able to say "I was there" as I wasn't. I had zero interest in watching a hockey game outside in winter, so instead I watched the game on NESN in the comfort of my home. :p

I'm more likely to go to round 2 at Fenway on a random weekend in January than I am to round 3 at MSG on a holiday weekend, but thats just me. I'm sure anyone from NYC who went to Fenway the first time has the opposite opinion.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. It was a balmy 70 degrees in the press box. :p

Geography has a lot to do with MSG for me but I wouldn't go to Fenway for hockey because of the risk of poor seating. I have avoided a few of the specialty games in other sports too. Lot of people I know went to Army-ND at Yankee Stadium but I just didn't feel that paying that kind of money to sit in the upper deck 60+ yards from the field was worth it and the lower level could have been worse. Looking at the Fenway hockey game on tv, it looked like a lot of people were disinterested due to the seating arrangement.

Same reason I wouldn't go to a soccer game in a baseball park (Celtic FC at Fenway)...it just isn't built for the sport and for every good seat there are 10 bad ones.

Was it this year they had to change the game at Wrigley because the wall was too close to the endzone? I vaguely remember something like that.

While the MSG game is expensive for many, it is primarily designed as an alumni engagement activity. In that regard, it works. BU, for one, could find additional ways to more directly engage alums; possibly getting a 'team' hotel and having breakfast with the team/coach or something like that to increase involvement and tighten the relationship. Have a pep rally at the hotel to greet the team's arrival at the hotel or send them off to the arena etc.

The hot dog and beer before the game, in my opinion, wasn't a great idea for alums out of school for a while...it is NYC, not everybody wants to have Saturday night dinner with their family in the concession stand at MSG. That seemed to be geared more towards younger alums. Offer a higher end version where alums can have dinner with some ex players for a donation to the school.

I did go to the game at Frozen Fenway and it was freezing but from all the students I have talked to who were there loved the atmosphere. Once a year with a less than perfect seat isn't as big of a deal as you old men are making it seem.I bought the cheapest tickets and had a decent seat behind the goal up the first base side. I have talked to NU students and other BU students about the idea of the beanpot there and they all love the idea(Insert BC kids are smart enough to know this is a dumb idea comment here). So it is probably the kids who can drink some substances to keep you a little warmer would enjoy it more than the rest of the crowd. Plus the students are standing up the whole game anyway. I don't think it as bad as everyone is making it seem. The ice surface really would be my only concern if we got a warm day the day of the game or something. I think the atmosphere would outweigh all of the negatives you guys are talking about now but that's just me.

Once a year? That would never happen--and for good reason. I'm only 26 and I can tell you right now that I would not go to a BC-BU game at Fenway next year. The ice surface for outdoor games is almost always terrible.
