Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

I

I can see someone already told you that your opinion is "wrong"

Yes he is smart but he just does alot of dumb things on the ice (cuz he was distracted mentally by his soon to be career in the AHL) . I guess there is a difference.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

at the end of the day he is a very smart hockey player and is regarded as such by the NHL and the Bruins. Haing an off year does not make him a "not smart player"

Sometimes a change is good, usualy no more so than in sports. Wideman etc.

One of his many strengths is his hockey IQ, which has always been regarded as off the charts. He didnt get dumb in one year.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

No worries, jofa. Nothing wrong with giving your own personal opinion on the player--that's what this board is for.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

jd, you typed that there was nothing to come back and do next year.... I opined that a threepeat would be pretty sweet.

Soooo, where is everybody sitting? Section 123, represent!

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

Great Post Bantam. Couple of minor items: We had been beaten by Mich Tech 4-2 in the opening round of Great Lakes and Tom Ross had his jaw broken in a 10-3 win over Colorado College in the consolation round. I remember being heart broken when MTU won and went down to the exit at the lobby end of the Arena to console the team as it came off the ice.

The Feb 1966 Beanpot account was great with one change; Bear Bassi decked Tag Demment in the center ice fight. One thing people need to be reminded of was that it was only the 2nd time we had won the Beanpot. We had dropped 2 previous 1 goal decisions to the Eagles. It began a long turnaorund for the BU program.

Double overtime tie in 1966 Arena Tournament was the most exciting game I've ever seen from start to finish ( DC ending in 2009 was greatest last 4 minutes plus OT) Darrell not only roofed it he did it on the backhand. Like you I remember clearly the announcement that the trolleys were going to stop as it was after midnight and there were "blue laws" then. I was lucky as my uncle drove me and brought me home. The other piece was that Cornell (Big Red) had red paint on the lower part of the shafts of their sticks and I recall that they lost a goal on a stick above the shoulder call because of the red paint. Bob Ferguson, the youngest of the Cornell Ferguson's gave me a stick at the end of the game!

March 1977 game was emblematic of an era when we had guys who could score on demand and it showed! As for Rick Meagher my recollection of the end to end goal that tied the game with Minnesota was not only was he a blur but he literally did a 90 degree sharp cut on the end line to bring it in front to beat Shelstad (Please note if I am off it is because I would have failed physics if not for the Kent State shutdown and thus my math/physics may be slightly off 41 years after the fact!)

My feeling as to 70-71, 71-72 is that had there been no WHA and Jack Kelley, Ric Jordan, Bob Brown, Ron Anderson, (and that other guy) stayed for 72-73 the team would have readily contended for a 3rd straight title.

Drop me an e-mail if you would and we can stroll down memory lane in a bit more depth

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

welp, doesn't make my feelings about our team better this year, but it was real nice seeing BC go down in the first round. They win tonight and I'm pretty sure they don't stop.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

I don't think the "inevitable" vibe surrounding BC has been seen on a team since . . . Michigan in 1997. Hmmmm . . .

:D

I'm still surprised! I had BC losing to Michigan in the 2nd round. Who knew about this CC team?!?

Especially on those short-handed goals. CC looked like BC. There's just that look where even though they're short-handed they're still in control. That's been BC for a bunch of years now. And you saw it tonight with CC. Really an amazing game to watch.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

Very surprisewd that BC lost, but more surprised at how good CC looked. Their goalie was unbeleivable. BC had the mojo going in the third and at times throughout the first two periods. Between Howe and the posts, iot wasn't meant to be.

Let's hope Merrimack can win.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

BC losing actually made me a bit more PO'd that BU didn't eek into the tournament. It reminded me (once again) that anything can happen in a single elimination tournament. BUT, having said that. This CC team was on a roll at the end of the regular season. BU? Not so much.

Atkinson and Almeida's goals in the 3rd also reminded me that no amount of coaching can create skill like that. My word, were those some serious snipes.

Re: Boston University Part IV: Off-Season or New Season?

just saw this from collegefam06 in the BC thread:

"Hopefully Jerry gives them more of an off season than the partial week of spring break and 2 daya given the Terriers by Parker."

Is this true?? Is BU practicing again??

They aren't skating...that is not allowed. Off season work outs but still no break to speak of to mentally focus on things besides hockey. IMHO Parker has no clue how to build the mental side of the coaching equation. FL should research and compare mandatory elements of BU vs other programs.

Indeed. Twice a day. And three times on Sunday.

I know it makes you feel better after the crushing your team took last night to come on here and trash BU and their coaching staff, but please leave that to us. Thank you.

Idle thoughts as I ponder going up to Manchester this afternoon.

1. CC-BC impressions: The first two periods -- and even the 5-on-3 PK in the third -- made me recall the smoking that Lake State gave BU in 1994. The Eagles just didn't show up last night. Yes on Atkinson's goal (I wonder if he'll follow Nyquist's footsteps?), but Jaden Schwartz was the show. I looked up Howe's goaltending numbers for the season and was amazed: 3.10 GAA and .89something save%. (Maybe he took that kind of pill that it's in the movie Limitless.) Funny that BC just squeezed by Yale 8-7 in the first round last year when Yale's weakness was in the net. If one of their goaltenders had the kind of night that Howe had, the Eagles would have been bounced in 2010.

2. The tournament generally. I'm sorry to see all those empty seats, especially when there were a bunch of great games. Odd that RS games with good match-ups sell out, but the league tourneys and now the NCAAs don't draw flies. (Even HE was less than banged out.)

3. Wouldas, shouldas, etc. Agreed on the one-and-done format (which I wouldn't change). In any given year it's likely thatthe best team in the country gets booted. Wasn't MSU 5th in their league when they won it all a few years ago (after beating BU)? And in 2009 BU was the only #1 to advance -- and their run easily could have ended in Manchester.

4. Ending the season with a loss. That's what all the good, even most of the great teams do, except for one. BC had an excellent season, but now not a great one, given the way that they went out. And how do you think UNH fans will feel if they don't get past Miami this afternoon? They're a good team -- probably better than good -- but people will be calling for Umile's head once again. And the drumbeat will be even louder in Orono.

5. Looking ahead. It will be a long spring and summer, but I'm upbeat about BU next year. The current freshmen will know how to play a full season (and full a game). The Terriers don't lose nearly as much talent as the competition. (Fingers crossed that #31 comes back.) In the meantime, go Merrimack!

Ticket prices... I was thinking of going to Manchester tonight... but $54.10 (when you include ticketmaster fees) seems like a lot of money for a college hockey game... espically when you dont have a dog in the fight.
