Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

Wow, that low? With all the yapping from BU fans about how great he is, I expected him to go higher.

Now I see that scouts question if he can score against real competition. And he's not even the first Hockey East player chosen...what caused the drop?

Central Scouting had him at #24 for North Americans and three Europeans were taken ahead of him, so #28 is right on target. And right where many respected draft predictors had him.

The future? He'll have to prove himself--on the ice-- like any other prospect. If history teaches us anything, it's certain some top ten picks won't ever reach the NHL while some lower round picks will make their GMs look brilliant.

But thanks again for the easy layup. Your assist total--for posting easily refuted blather--keeps on growing. ;)

Did you come over to this thread just to make a fool of yourself, or was there another reason?

NU fool is just beating his chest because of all those first round picks Northeastern had this year. Oh wait, nevermind...

funny thing is that he doesn't post on NU's thread:rolleyes: ............seems to me he has an obsession with Boston University as almost all his posts are on your thread.............enjoy;)

A noreaster is a storm which has nothing to do with northeastern. ;)

I do think being a little shorter has more of an impact on defensemen than forwards in determining whether a player can make the jump to the NHL, so the Gionta and St. Louis examples don't really fit.

That said, I love the trade from a Bruins perspective... Warsofsky is no sure thing at the pro level but he has the potential to be a really good top-4 d-man on a good team. He's a proven winner at every level. Sobotka was never going to be more than an energy guy for the Bruins.

Even if he's a third pairing guy on a regular shift, his offensive ability makes him extremely valuable on the power play. After seeing Andrew Ference man the point at times in the last couple years, I'd be excited instantly to see Warsofsky doing that.

The Bruins appear to be willing to take a chance that Warsofsky can emulate the success of someone like Brian Rafalski, who is about 5-9, 190 and has great offensive skills. There was a Chiarelli quote that said Warsofsky is up to 190. Is that true? Seems like a big jump from last year's roster weight.

Since Hokydad is best friends with DW he can probably tell us...

Of course kids grow. many dont stop to 19 or 20. DW turned 18 that year in late April, growing an inch or 2 wouldnt shock me.

OR NOT.

But at least he has his USA jersey!

Yeah, Sobotka's a solid 4th-line center, but so is Greg Campbell, the guy we just got from Florida as part of the Horton deal. And we have plenty of 3rd/4th-line wings, too, so there wasn't really room for both Sobotka and Campbell. I'd be willing to bet that any of those B's fans crying about this either A) don't realize Campbell and Sobotka are basically the same player, and/or B) have never seen Warsofsky play.

As for your question, Whit, there's no doubt in my mind that Warsofsky will play in the NHL some day. It's probably at least two or three years down the road, but I have no doubt that it will happen.

Non college hockey fans tend to freak out when anything NCAA is mentioned. Heck, I've already seen people criticizing the K. Hayes and Coyle 1st round picks due to the level of competition each is coming from. I don't like seeing Sobotka traded, but the Bruins have pretty much zero elite defensive prospects. I don't think Warsofsky is a no brainer to be in the NHL for obvious reasons, but I certainly wouldn't rule it out.

Of the 299 defensemen that saw time in the NHL this season, only five were 5'9 or smaller (Strangely enough, St. Louis had one of them in Mike Weaver). It's an uphill climb for a player that size, even as talented and driven as Warsofsky is.

I was gonna ask about that. It's almost a certainty that if he does make it to the NHL, he will be THE smallest dman in the league.

There are a lot of things at BU to worry about, one of them is not DW. His entire life he has had the exact same height disadvantage and it has nevr bothered him, never. Not when he was 7 or 8 playing up a year on the Sharks in the old MBHL, not when he was 10 and making the all star team at the Brick tournament in Edmonton, going up against Stamkos, Eberlee etc,. Not when he was 16 winning a national championship on the GBL U-18 team at the tier 1 nationals vs Shatucks St marys. Not when he was a freshmen at Marshfield, leading state in scoring as a forward and winninga state championship, not at Cushing when he had about 50 + points, not at US natl team when he was second on team in scoring, team captain etc. Not at BU as a fresh or soph and it wont bother him at the pro level. His greatest strength outside his skating, hands etc is his head and game sense. Tremendous composure, hardly ever, if ever panics with the puck and has probably a bettr pro grame than college game. Bruins have him coming in for a reason and it was not to waste time on paper work.

There area lot of things for BU to worry about, DW not being one of them.

Oh my god get me the barf bag

2) Everyone thought Chris Drury, Martin St. Louis, and Brian Gionta were too small for the NHL. How'd that work out?

Forwards my friend...

Agree

I just realized that the way spring break falls this year, students won't be around for either the HE quarters (if BU hosts) or the HE semis (if BU makes it). Kinda sucks. Usually we miss the last weekend of the regular season and the quarters.

Pretty sure Bouillon is shorter, like 5'8, 180 kinda build. Basically the same build as Warsofsky but certainly not as good of a skater or puck handler. Bouillon isn't a great player by any means, but he holds his own and has lasted for a while in the NHL.

Frankly, Warsofsky has a pretty good example from BU with Freddy Meyer having played 5-6 NHL years now. Freddy clearly was better defensively, but Warsofsky is much better offensively and is a slightly better skater, and is only about an inch shorter than Freddy according to the listings.
