Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

What hapened with Russ Barlett and David Klema?

Jack was not happy with Bartlett's soft playing style, which reminded him a lot of how Craig Janney played, so much so that it caused him to puke.

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

Klema scored for PC:p

Actually his situation seemed quite similar to Brett's highly touted recruit, struggled initially, and had no interest in listening to his coaches on how to improve his game. I don't recall anything anything ever being reported one way or another whether he was allowed to keep his scholarship, although since the dismissal took place one month into his senior year I would wager money he was able to keep his scholarship.

Barlett is from a time when I was still just a casual fan, I have absolutely no idea.

From the best of my memory...

1. Klema - JP's perception was an overall lack of committment. The final straw being DK not being insufficiently devoted to off-ice conditioning prior to the season. I don't think he was an athletic scholarship guy.

2. Bartlett - My perception was that Bartlett wasn't hard-nosed enough for Parker. He was 6' 1'', or taller, and played like he was 5' 6'' or so. He was the aniti-Brad Zancanaro. Bartlett could've kept his scholarship, but decided to transfer to SLU.

Again, to the best of my knowledge, there were no "conduct unbecoming" issues with either of them

I thought Klema lost interest in hockey, burned out and quit the team? Maybe Parker helped him make up his mind, but I didn't think Parker kicked him off.

Definitely kicked off, maybe his lack of interest caused behavior that led Parker to decide to kick him off before he could quit, I don't know, but I'm certain he was dismissed by the coaches.

Considering this is Jack Parker we're talking about, the other possible reason for the timing of this dismissal is he needed a scholarship to give a certain player who had just committed from a prominant school in the west and booting Saponari was his means to find scholarship space...

Nope, there is no reason to consider what you suggest as a possible scenario. Parker has never booted a player for that reason. And hypothetically, if it were just to free up a scholly, Saponari was far from the likely choice.

Bennett and Bartlett were both dismissed for cause, as were the Lappins. Bennett for reasons previously posted here; Bartlett because he simply refused to play physical hockey. Even then, Parker helped him get picked up by SLU. Numerous lesser players--walk-ons--have not been invited back, for a variety of reasons.

While recruited players will assume they'll be invited back each season after their freshman year, there is no guarantee if you're not meeting program requirements--on the ice, off the ice, in the classroom.

These types of dismissals happen in all programs, including Ivies and even "up the street."

Janney = 110 points in 71 games at BC (2 years, including 83 points his soph year)
Bartlett = 51 points in 75 games at BU (2 years)

Yeah, Jack, great comparison and fabulous reason for kicking a kid out of the program. The last thing you want on a team is a guy who can put the puck in the net. I'm assuming Jack was still drinking in 99/00...

The epic SLU - BU NCAA regional game was played during the 1999-2000 season. I don't think Bartlett played for SLU that season; he was sitting out his transfer. Hockeydb lists him as idle during the 1999-2000 season. He played for SLU during the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons.

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

Changing topics for a post, Maine released its sked today. BU will host Maine on 11/6 and travel to the middle of nowhere for a series on 1/28-29.

Any Idea when BU will publish /release its schedule for 2010-2011.

It is still going to the Shillelagh Tournament and GLI correct?

You are correct, forgot to add the year he sat out to my mental math.:o

Incomplete projected schedule as a sidebar on the blog? Please:)

Edit: Did you just add one this second or was I blind, just realized there is one on the right.

Cut and pasted from previous thread:

So as far as we know the schedule is:

27 League Games
2 x Beanpot
Brown at Home
Harvard at Home
RPI at RPI
Wisco and HC in Ice Breaker
ND and ??? in the Shillelagh?

And that would fill the schedule correct? Apart from an exhibition or two?

Any firm dates on the OOC games or the tourneys?

Ben Lovejoy? Never heard of him. Are you sure he wasn't over at Northeastern?

Joe Schuman? Hey, have any of you guys heard of a guy named Joe Schuman? No? Nope, we never had one of them.

I don't have any inside information here, but if you have details on what happened with Schuman and/or Lovejoy, why don't you share? I never read or heard anything about them being kicked off the team.

Check the blog in my sig. Halfway down on the right side. As firm as you'll get at this point. (Insert that's what she said joke here)

They weren't kicked off the team. It was merely strongly suggested that if you wish to play any more college hockey, it won't be here. What's the difference?

you failed. the correct answer was joe pearce.

players get benched all the time, some give up and transfer, some dont and try to work their way back. this isnt 'no child left behind'; no one is guaranteed ice time. so i fail to see how that equates to a player getting involuntarily dismissed from the team. are you saying that pat percella's situation is the same as vinny saponari?

Re: Boston University Offseason Thread 2: Moving Forward by Booting Forwards

I thought Pearce got into some trouble, no?

I'm saying that Pat Percella, Russ Bartlett, Bruce Bennett situations are the same as the Schuman and Lovejoy situations. This isn't working, you won't be playing, might as well leave. Some see the situation for what it is and leave. Others need to be told. Anyone who paid attention to the BU goaltending situation in 2007-08 couldn't have been surprised by Bennett's departure. The handwriting was on the wall in neon colors after Rollheiser was recruited.

In all honesty, regarding Pearce, you won't tell me that JY or MK suggested (or asked) him to leave? He dug in his heels and stayed. And how did that "working his way back" turn out for him in terms of hockey?

Certainly, when Parker tells Bartlett and Bennett you won't be playing, but you can keep the scholarship, he counts on the kid's desire to play hockey elsewhere, so he (JP) will still have the scholarship to offer.

The Saponaris situation has nothing to do with any of these instances.

i agree with all of this

i will disagree here and say the pearce situation was probably a lot more like saponari's situation than people would believe. also, i did not mean to imply that pearce was one of those who 'worked his way back'. He was removed from the team, refused to transfer, and was ultimately taken back by the team. so it was more like he called JY's bluff.
