I don't think so. I see the one year suspension as a purely punitive measure for someone who broke a rule rather than someone who is actively playing ineligible by taking extra benefits, not having proper credits/grades, etc.. I think that "suspension" and "ineligibility" are two different concepts.

And BU's statement says the NCAA already took "remedial action", and there is no mention of it including retroactive punishment.

Another question i have is it said there are/were players from other teams involved. Since no names, i am assuming former players just like the unnamed former BU players involved?

Re: Boston University 2015-16 thread part 2-move along! nothing to see here! all is w

Would be interesting to know how BU became aware of the situation. Certainly not something i would blame quinn for if he didn't know about. Try as you might, you can't know everything.

Re: Boston University 2015-16 thread part 2-move along! nothing to see here! all is w

Right but if you look at say a reggie bush. He was eligible but then revelations of his family getting money cane up. Not only was he announced as ineligible but i THOUGHT he was retroactively deemed ineligible for games he played in/USC had to forfeit wins for using ineligible player. I have no idea if i have all the details right, just looking for clarification.

I didn't know that. Hmmmm. I don't think he should have been deemed ineligible, especially due to something idiot family members did, though I know so very little about it I really can't comment. Didn't the program get penalized - i.e. no bowl games or something? That I could see potentially happening. However I don't think the NCAA gives a rat's *** about college hockey, otherwise they would have taken away Maine's title back in 93.

I'm not ready to make that leap, I think they only used Roberto's name because BU confirmed it, there may be other current ones lacking airtight confirmation so they are not going to toss those names out yet.

It said BU heard rumors and investigated. I too wonder who told them this rumor, and did the person tell any other schools? I wonder if other schools will start looking into this now, and I wonder how a year long suspension works for a player that is found out 2/3s or 3/4s of the way through a season. Do they miss 365 days from when the school/NCAA first suspends them?

If i am remembering will grier situation (florida qb), it's a 365 day situation but i could have that wrong as well.

Good call, us BU fans have a far inferior college football infraction database in our heads, it appears he is eligible part of the way through next season, after he has sat out a full 12 months. I'd assume that'd be the model for any further current students involved with this. I doubt it, but maybe some would step forward now voluntarily to get their time served out of the way.

I wonder if one other player already has been disciplined...Hoky?

So would that mean 365 days from when it was announced, meaning he would be ineligible to play until next December/January, or could they decide to include the first half of this season into the 365 days?

(Just curious. No idea how any of this works.)

Roberto is good to go next year as he will have been suspended for 1 full season at that point, the 365 day rule would impact any other current players, if any, on the "other teams" who are caught during this season after already having played a few months of the season.

According to an update last evening to a Buffalo News article only Roberto was investigated: <I><B>UPDATE: "The only investigation that took place was focused on Roberto," Assistant Athletic Director Brian Kelley told The News in an email. "Any involvement of Eichel or other former players is speculation at this point."</B></I> I'm not sure where the information about other former BU players or players from other teams came from.

The fact that the NCAA referred queries back to BU suggests that the story amounts to a great big nothing at the moment, despite efforts to depict it otherwise.

Just because Roberto was the only one investigated by BU - doesn't mean there weren't others involved. BU would have no business investigating players on other teams. And BU would have no business investigating players that are no longer there. So, obviously, from their standpoint, it's true that no one else was investigated. ... Brian Kelley is not saying no one else is involved. He's answering a question from the Buffalo News in regards to Eichel specifically - which is the rumor out there, and which the Buffalo News would have direct interest in knowing about. BU answers the Buffalo News by clarifying that they didn't investigate anyone else. Which is true. That has no bearing on anything else, and doesn't contradict the CHN story.

Out of curiosity (because I don't have the patience to compare this year's and last year's BU rosters) ... who would be the other BU players from last year's team who are no longer with the program? Eichel, O'Connor ...

If other players were involved and it would have rendered them ineligible during games last season, the NCAA would still be investigating. The language they used, and BU used, implies that there is no further investigation into anyone else. The NCAA is not one to willingly let violations slide unless it's a multi-million $$ football or basketball program. Hockey is small potatoes for them, they'll ding anyone they want for stuff like this. They especially HATE gambling of all forms.

To name a few, Piccinich, TJ Ryan, Kevin Duane, Erod, Hohmann, Moccia.

Quite simply that's because these are not violations that would render one retroactively ineligible.
