Problem for Roberto is you have to treat everybody the same playing college sports. You can't have a rule that NCAA hoops players can't be in hock to a bookie because the large amount of wagering on the sport and potential for throwing games, but allow hockey players off with a slap on the wrist because that's not a factor in their sport. Or also if you play an important position vs if you're a scrub. Same rules have to apply to all.

Even those who left. He shouldn't be the poster boy if others and very large dollars were involved. I said IF

So if the NCAA was involved, then it was'nt a "coaches decision" for some time. It seems Quinn was less than truthful. It ain't the crime, it's the coverup that gets you.

Yeah, but if those guys are no longer playing in collegiate ranks, have graduated, or otherwise aren't affiliated with the NCAA, what can the NCAA do? Law enforcement seems to not care about Roberto, so it would stand to reason they don't care about the other players allegedly involved either. Sports gambling is on the fast track to being legalized federally anyways, so this isn't exactly some major felony being committed.

He only said it was a "coach's decision" for the season opening Union game and he had no comment after that. How would you know that BU wasn't still investigating the matter and didn't hand it over to the NCAA and receive a decision until after the Union game? Unless you know that you have no basis for calling Quinn a liar.

To me the statement/article reads like BU recently heard back from NCAA on what they deemed an appropriate suspension, and earlier in the season BU was holding him out on their own indefinitely waiting for an official ruling.

But BU's 'coach's decision' statement didn't change until CHN was breaking the story.

When was the last time he made that statement? Also rumors first started last week that Roberto was out for the full year, very possible that's about when BU heard the news. If they knew earlier in the year I think they would have lined up the 2nd semester roster addition earlier in the year.

Re: Boston University 2015-16 thread part 2-move along! nothing to see here! all is w

A couple of points:

1) Entirely possible Quinn couldn't turf the kid until investigation completed/something proven ("hey turns out you were innocent, sorry we took away your scholarship!"). Not the same as when Fidel Nicastro got booted because I believe he got charged with a crime (later dropped). That puts Quinn in a tough spot, so suspending him coaches decision and then leaving it at that seems the best of some not very good options.

2) Gambling can be legal or illegal, but you still can't have college players partaking in it at least where they're making uncovered wagers because of the potential for massive problems with the integrity of the game. You can't tell James Winston for example not to gamble because you're concerned a one and done player might toss a bowl game to pay off debts, but its fine for a 3rd line college hockey player to do so since people don't bet on the sport. So, you hold all players to the same standard. I don't care if someone buys scratch tickets or puts in 5 bucks in the office pool. However, gambling on credit, be it the legal kind (credit cards at a casino) or the illegal kind (you owe money to a bookie) is banned, plain and simple. If you'd rather put gambling above playing a college sport, nobody's stopping you but that's a choice you're making. The NCAA doesn't have to accommodate you.
