Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

Boston University joins Patriot League.

Is this a good thing? Kinda seems like a lateral move.

Seems like a downward move to me. BU will be by-far the largest school by enrollment, with the next largest, American University, enrolling 6,000 students. At least in America East it was competing with other large universities. Patriot League are mostly small liberal arts colleges. I don't understand the logic here, as BU isn't a good fit academically or athletically, in my mind.

It will bring them down to my neck of the woods more often so that is one positive for me, for the school, I'd love to hear the logic. NU is a CAA member and they don't have football, maybe the CAA didn't want another non-FB team. That conference would have been a better fit from the outside view.

I can't see this helping recruiting for any sport either, there are some really bad teams in this league as far as bball and soccer, that maybe fine if you are a 4500 student liberal arts college but BU is either in or knocking on NCAA doors every year, they should have been poised for a step up, not down.

Apparently at the CAA Presidents' meeting this week, bu did not gain admission. No football and no baseball did not enhance its chances. Plan B must have been "Let's become a big fish in a smallish pond." They are with some pretty fair schools on the academic side, but are mismatched in most other ways. I can't see many real advantages - certainly not in terms of the competition.

Isn't the Patriot League a non-scholarship conference?

It used to be non-scholarship. I would be surprised if it were not. Then again, what is really meant by "non-scholarship"? The Ivies also make that claim, but if you can't pay, you don't really have to.;)
Some of the PL colleges have Ivy growing on campus (and in their minds).

It's a mild upgrade for mens basketball, which is what they're looking for, America East is woefully bad there, Patriot is marginally better. The CAA is somewhat of a sinking ship, with VCU, ODU leaving, George Mason having flirted with it, and a bunch of the CAA programs dropping football. Plus, the CAA is mostly a southern league, so travel expenses would increase quite a bit. Geographically, it's a better move, since it'll put us more in the mid-Atlantic states, and out of upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Still not the best move, but not entirely lateral.

I see the Patriot League as an improvement in terms of basketball. It is important to consider that Stony Brook is looking likely to join the Colonial, meaning a weakening of America East. Also the academics are a fit in terms of overall quality of the institution more than the specific focus (liberal arts).

True. Good point about Stony Brook.

Weakening of America East? Yikes... Kind of toungue in cheek.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

For 2011-2012, in USA Today's Sagarin ratings, Patriot League was #22 conference while America East is #29, so there is some upside in basketball though I would say it still falls short of being a true mid-major.

Coloninal #14
Atlantic 10 #7

Academically, it's a good move. The Military and Naval Academies blow the tops off (pun!) of any other institution in AE. Additionally, Lehigh is a very, very strong school, and Georgetown is an affiliate member, even if it's football only and we'd never actually play them in anything.

Anyone know a good place to get Patriot League fan reactions? I'm really curious.

Bucknell students on FB are mad that there is another BU in their conference, besides that I have nothing to report.

Re: Boston University 2011-2012: Part The Sixth

With the facility and location that BU has, I would have hoped for something better. BU tried to get into the A-10 a few years ago but was rejected. I do not see the benefit to joining the Patriot League. I doubt it will have much of an impact on recruiting and BU hoops will continue to be a stepping stone for coaches looking to move up to major programs.

Lol I knew one person who went to Bucknell and called it BU. I asked him to go to bu.edu and see what's what.

Talking to a Bucknell student, and seeing their friends' reactions, it seems like they were obviously surprised by the decision, somewhat skeptical of how we fit overall with the smaller schools. One plus for basketball is all conference tournament games, not just the final as in AE, are played at the higher seed's gym which means more potential games at home (please god let them be in Case).

If football comes back I love it. If it doesn't I hate it.
