Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

What was JP supposed to say before the Maine game? they all knew what it was about, they all knew their season was on the line, nothing he could say 5 minutes before the game could help. Now, if he saw it all week in practice I'd hope he'd try something to shake them up...but at that point you are trying to pull a rabbit out of the hat...if they don't want to put in the effort you can't make them, they are too old to motivate with a gimmick or a story

Agreed... very well put.

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

My understanding of 14 being scratched was due to a defensive blunder against RPI. I don't know of any other suspension issue as Aggannis has mentioned.

Nevertheless, this brings me to another issue I have with JP. There is no question that he is so afraid to lose that he lets the "top" players do whatever they want and get away with it. Mistakes were plentiful in every game, effort was poor, yet discipline was definitely inconsistent. Certain players can do no right and others can do no wrong. A great coach has control of all players. JP clearly does not have that respect. JP's MO is negativity. But by not benching the players that need the discipline the most, it sends the wrong message to the team, kills morale and is just poor coaching. On the flip side, rewarding players who are playing well should be standard operating procedure. This is definitely not a typical JP strategy. If the top players are playing poorly, he shortens the bench and plays them more. In case it's not too obvious, I feel it is time for a change on Comm Ave.

I thought Jack's statement about benching more guys during the season was interesting. Do you think that would have helped? What if during the season Coach found out that a bunch of guys on the team broke a rule but if he decided to bench them, he would have had to forfeit a game. If that was his way of getting control of the team back, would you have supported that?

"Boston University captain Brian McGuirk and junior forward Brandon Yip are among four players who have been suspended indefinitely by head coach Jack Parker for violating unspecified team rules.

Seniors Bryan Ewing and Dan McGoff are the other suspended players.

"I'm disappointed that these four chose to break one of our team rules," said Parker in a statement. "This is strictly a team matter.""

USHR reports that Avon Old Farms defenseman Patrick MacGregor, 6-4, 210 RD, has committed to BU for next fall. Besides playing for AOF's prep school champions (2 assists in the title game vs NMH), he played in the Western Prep fall league http://westernprep-elite.com/players_print.php

Before AOF, a two-time All-State player in Hamden CT.

Nice. :) We've had some luck with players from CT recently. :D Hopefully he can step in and help.

Specifics, names, instances.

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

IIRC it could have been last year or this year, but didn't Bonino get benched for a game?

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

Colby got benched once this year, I believe that was it for the "big names."

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

They were confident we'd go right back to the semi's without the work; it could be argued we were less talented the next year but the miserable year brought more focus.

You hear it frequently from good teams, "we started off-season conditioning with a purpose, we wanted to get the bad taste of losing out of our mouth etc"
let's hope that this previous season is a nice wake up call for next years team, and we can be more focused for next season... get back to the NCAA's like this team deserves to be in each season

He's got some nice size and it gives BU some possible options now with 7 Dmen on roster. Not sure about his overall game level... Reason being that (as a PG "super" senior at 20 years old), and with his size, if he was a true "top" prospect/recruit, he would have been snapped up by a D-1 program long ago and well prior to only 4 months until next school year. My thoughts are he is likely one of the best still available on the market to fill newly open roster spots of Shattenkirk and C.Cohen and touted as a big defensive defenseman, perhaps a "Gryba in training". Whether he is ready to step in or is going to be a depth player for a while is an open question, I wouldn't bet the farm on him starting right away.;)

Around late November, I was rooting for Shatty to get bench. Of course it's improbable that Parker would bench a captain when the captain doesn't break team rules, but I felt it was probably the only way the team would wake up.

I'm kind of confused as to how Shatty can say that he should have done this, this and this, and yet he failed to do it during the season. During some of his press conferences during the season, it was very clear to me that he did not have what it takes to be the leader of that team. I put a lot of the blame for the season on Shatty and Bonino. I think Gryba fulfilled his role as an assistant captain, but I don't see what Bonino did at all off the ice and Shatty just could not step up.

I also agree with Parker that he needs to monitor the team's behavior off the ice. There were/are a bunch of rumors going around on campus about things the team did beyond just drink (and not on Saturday nights) that definitely gave the team a bad reputation. The players this season failed to represent BU well both on and off the ice.

It's not without precedent. Jack benched John Cullen way back when. He of the most goals in BU history.

Leading a large group of people with different personalities that respond to coaching tactics differently is never easy. I think the coaching staff was spoiled having Matt Gilroy and John McCarthy.

Well, there are a lot of shiny trophies in his office that may beg to differ...

I beg to differ relative to the last decade. There have been painfully few trophies other than Beanpots the last 10 years.

The talent year in and year out has been among the best in the country (including this year) yet the players have repeatedly underacheived and lost the "big one" each season save last year's miraculous finish. My opinion is BU's hardware to talent ratio is among the lowest in the country.

How does an experienced head coach replace Quinn with Powers? Has anyone factored this huge coaching decision into the regression of the defense this year?

I believe Parker is so self absorbed he can't see his role in the lack of focus and committment of the players. Next year will be a disaster season because JP thinks by punishing the players he will somehow change the chemistry/ lack of respect dynamics that he has created. He is now getting from the players what he gives them.

I was thinking and wondering the other day.....is Mass hockey just weaker now than it used to be when i was in school? Is that why few local kids are becoming Terriers today or do the local coaches know what's going on and make sure their kids go anywhere but BU? I don't know the answer to that but in my opinion we have entered a bleak future for Terrier hockey that won't change until leadership changes.

Just one persons opinion.
