Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

I bummed about this. Vinny was getting very, very good. I appreciate there are rules and these guys broke them but a dismissal seems harsh.

Granted I don't know these guys and their history.

I thought it was just Victor getting booted though?

Perhaps Vinny stood up for his brother and Parker called his bluff?

Two thoughts/questions:

1.) In light of the the early departures, dismissals, and suspensions what the heck will the lines look like next year? The roster looks extremely young and thin to me. Anybody have confidence in contending for the conference or 20+ wins?

2.) Why do I know that York will take advantage of this by choosing to "rehabilitate" his guys that were involved in the T-Crash drinking thing. All the future recruits will see JP's "My way or the highway" old school approach and contrast it to JY's forgiving attitutude and be further swayed to the other end of Comm Ave.

They'll think, "Geez, what if I screw up? I don't want to be kicked out of school, I'll go to BC or somewhere else other than BU."

I actually agree with the "rules are rules" approach of JP but it just doesn't work anymore. This generation consists of kids raised on the tenents of instant gratification, entitlement, and artificially inflated self esteem.

Kids today are taught they are the best from day 1 and think they deserve success rather than having to work for it.

I manage some recent college grads every day and it can be very, very tough.

Hey, don't judge us all on a few. That's not even remotely true of everyone.

do you actually believe that York would do this? if they were playing for him the "cumulative instances" would have been the first, MAYBE the second instance of breaking the rules.........think early 2007-2008 season

Was just gonna mention O'Hanley and Motherwell. One difference is there was never a press release/article detailing what happened and there were no quotes from York on it.

Do Brian O'Hanley and Brett Motherwell feel that way?

IIRC, Brendan Walsh's final straw involved bringing refreshments to his punishment run (beer and chinese food?). Anyone recall the initial transgression?

I could be wrong but I believe it was due to his lackadaisical play during the game the previous night.

When the majority of your freshmen are 20 and several are 21 during the season, I guess "young" is all relative compared to your AARP captain of a couple of years ago.

Well, the Lappin bros were pre-internet, which makes a big difference with regard to knowing what went on. However, as I recall, it was an annoyance having them around, more or less.

One of the brothers, Chris, may have been the worst d-man I've seen in over 40 years of watching BU hockey.

This is just rumor, pre-internet again, but reportedly a very lively conversation took place between JP and Lappin pere after his sons were Felix Ungered.

Stay away for a day and... What the...!?

I'm surprised nobody has brought up Jack's attempted axing before the 2008-2009 season. (Zach Cohen and Steve Smolinsky, for those that don't know.) Too bad Matt Gilroy and John McCarthy weren't around to save Vinny.

I don't like the smell of this.

This is exactly what I'm curious about.
1. Why now? Why did Parker wait to make the decision about Vinny until this morning? If he knew about it back in March when it happened and waited to do something about it until now, why?
2. If he didn't know until now, who snitched? Why?
3. Did he talk to the captains before kicking Vinny of the team? Why did nobody stick up for Vinny (and Victor) the way they stuck up for Zach Cohen and Smolinsky? You have a full team of kids who know that when you stick up for your teammates, the coach might change his mind. They saw it at the end of 2008. What happened there?
4. If captains knew and did not stick up for Vinny, is it because they were there drinking too?
5. What did Vinny do that was so egregiously worse than what Corey did that he had to be kicked off the team? Corey and Vinny are always together. Chances are, if one of them is late for something, the other is too. If one of them is drinking somewhere, the other is too. Why the different punishments for the two?
6. What about Kraus?

because it is reminiscent of the Kremlin in terms of releasing any info at BC:eek:

1-well, it was implied in the freep story yesterday that "some" things just came to their attention. so while the st pat's thing may have been know, the others that threw Vincent over the edge may have not.
2-good question. maybe our little woodword and bernstein's will get to the bottom of it. ;)
3- another good question. we have who (i forget with all this other talk.. :o :D ) oh, joey p, crisco, warso. hmmmmm - does anyone see any of those three laying down a rap?:p
4- i think there were more involved than these four. the tone of everything written leads one to believe that these four were mentioned due to extra issues of circumstances (guessing - buying. 2nd/3rd/4th offense. anyone else with a guess _______)
5- see above. level of floor occupied in the Parker shithouse. basement, 3rd floor, penthouse.
6- see 4. what number of transgression was this for him?

Maybe he wanted the school year to be finished?

I think you may be looking at the symptoms and missing the disease. You are trying to connect offenses and punishments and look for rationale. That's not what Parker is doing, in my opnion. The dismissal was 'cumulative', and probably had much more to do with less specific surface offenses like drinking or missing practice and much more to about general attitude, team chemisty, and influence on others. Jack Parker is a legend who has been coaching for 35+ years and has seen a lot of hockey players come and go. If he believes it's in his team's best interest to dismiss a player, you should give him the benefit of the doubt. He may have had any number of reasons for waiting as long as he did. Perhaps he wanted to see improvements. Perhaps he needed to line-up his replacements. Maybe there were outside inlfluences. The fact the both brothers were dismissed leads me to believe he was trying to remove a bad situation...
