Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

If you're responding to one of my posts Mookie perhaps I wasn't very clear. I used the phrase "talented" player. It's hard to argue that Vinny and Corey aren't two of the most "talented" players. So I was suggesting that one or two college boy mistakes in the course of a season wouldn't have resulted in the discipline that was handed down. “Over a period of time, there have been cumulative instances in which Victor and Vinny Saponari have displayed conduct unbecoming of a Boston University hockey player,” Terriers coach Jack Parker said in a news release. The accent in that quote should be on cumulative. Somewhere in there was the straw that broke the camel's back. And while it's one thing to dismiss Victor from the team, I gotta believe that the decision on Vinny was much, much tougher for Parker to make. (maybe that's why the first reports suggested a suspension for Vinny???) So if Parker was sending a message to his team I figure he wanted Corey to hear it loud and clear.

not you specifically, no. just a general 'you' that seems to come out to imply a stark double standard that parker has for his boys and holds against those on his team that he hates... but since i just watched st elmo's fire again the other day, instead of 'you' and say it's 'many'... "nameless, faceless many!!":D

If he believes it's in his team's best interest to dismiss a player, you should give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sure Parker believes dismissing both Saponaris is in the team's best interest. He may be right. But I still don't feel anyone deserves the benefit of the doubt without being questioned.

he IS the head coach, right??

was there a meeting last month to set lines and dole out the travel budget for recruiting??? (i'd like the thailand/singapore territory if available :p )

Re: Boston University 2010 Offseason I - The Year after the Year after effect

I bummed about this. Vinny was getting very, very good. I appreciate there are rules and these guys broke them but a dismissal seems harsh.

Granted I don't know these guys and their history.

I thought it was just Victor getting booted though?

Perhaps Vinny stood up for his brother and Parker called his bluff?

Two thoughts/questions:

1.) In light of the the early departures, dismissals, and suspensions what the heck will the lines look like next year? The roster looks extremely young and thin to me. Anybody have confidence in contending for the conference or 20+ wins?

2.) Why do I know that York will take advantage of this by choosing to "rehabilitate" his guys that were involved in the T-Crash drinking thing. All the future recruits will see JP's "My way or the highway" old school approach and contrast it to JY's forgiving attitutude and be further swayed to the other end of Comm Ave.

They'll think, "Geez, what if I screw up? I don't want to be kicked out of school, I'll go to BC or somewhere else other than BU."

I actually agree with the "rules are rules" approach of JP but it just doesn't work anymore. This generation consists of kids raised on the tenents of instant gratification, entitlement, and artificially inflated self esteem.

Kids today are taught they are the best from day 1 and think they deserve success rather than having to work for it.

I manage some recent college grads every day and it can be very, very tough.

Didn't York kick out Bret Motherwell and Brian O'hanley DURING their 2008 championship season? I dont either York nor Parker would put up with this type of crap especially if its a consistent problem.

I don't think it's about "his boys" and/or "those he hates". In fact, I don't think he hates any of his players. I spoke about budlite's concept of inconsistent discipline, which I believe is not an uncommon thing on many, if not most athletic teams. Coaches have a different standard for certain players, particularly the most "talented" ones. Now certainly there would be some offenses for which this would not be true. Everyone can make their own judgement on what those offenses might be. But there have been many instances over the years where a 3rd/4th line player has paid a heavier price for an infraction or shortcoming than a "top 6" player would. And I suspect most of Parker's players know that. Like I said before, Parker's suggestion that he should have sat some guys down during this past year wasn't directed at the "grinders" on the team. So again, my guess is that both Vinny and Corey made quite a few more mistakes than we know (or need to know) about. Vinny was likely past the point of getting the benefit of the doubt, Corey might have been pretty close to that point.

This doesn't mean that Parker may not have made a mistake here. It's possible; it sure looks like he was about to make a mistake with ZFC and Smo two years ago, but that had nothing to do with events like the ones underlying this episode. Those guys were great teammates by all accounts, and their captains went to bat for them. Zach became a bit of a force the last two seasons and Smo stepped in to play two positions when the team needed him. It's a reasonable question as to whether there was the same level of support within the team for these two and Victor.

yeah, i wonder about that too... i would be surprised (but not shocked) if something new came to light between the time the suspensions were made public in the paper yesterday and the Vincent dismissal was made this morning that turned the key. so one is left to guess, what happened?

Thinking more about it... that is very very reasonable to question... I mean, look at the situation.

The "night before the night before" is your most important night of sleep when preparing for an athletic event, and these guys were apparently out drinking that night, instead of getting their rest for the most important game of the year. Essentially that says to your teammates "guys I really don't give a $#!* about this game". If you were on the team, and really really wanted to win and be at your best .... would you want someone with that attitude to be someone you are laying your butt on the line for? My guess is no.

Now, if #27 et al had gone to dinner at eight-o-clock and happened to be sipping on a pint with their burger, then they might be able to plead their case... but i'm assuming that was not the situation here.
