Boston University 2010-11 Part III - Is That So Much To Ask?

Re: Boston University 2010-11 Part III - Is That So Much To Ask?

Not the only beef, but certainly the most obvious area where BU's alleged "issues" most glaringly manifested themselves. BU's GF-GA in those games was 4-16.

Wow, that is a collective buttkicking. That's a tough one to spin but I'm sure some will try.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 Part III - Is That So Much To Ask?

Would most NCAA teams have loved to have had BU's 2000's decade? Sure. I think BU could have done better though.

This seems to be the most reasoned conclusion of the whole discussion. For most, our performance in the 2000's would be extraordinary. For BU, the standard is higher, and we expected more, and could have accomplished more. However, the Chicken Little mentality of some is unjustified. The program is not in a tailspin, the coaching staff doesn't need to be run out of town this spring, and the sky is not falling. Adjustments may need to be made in one or more of recruiting, coaching, teaching, player commitment, big game prep, mental prep, etc. But the tools are still in place for us to be a highly successful program. The level of parity that exists today didn't exist 20 years ago, especially with the rise of more programs such as Miami, Notre Dame, and even some of the Hockey East mid level teams. More good teams are out there, the tournament is more difficult to traverse, meaning looking for dominant results over a large time period is highly unlikely. Comparisons to BC are stupid because no one compares to them. I said it before, they're Secreteriat during the 2000s, and everyone else is battling for second.

Not the only beef, but certainly the most obvious area where BU's alleged "issues" most glaringly manifested themselves. BU's GF-GA in those games was 4-16. How about half the teams in the decade (some stacked with NHL prospects) that didn't even make it to the tournament? My main point is that the talent that was recruited did not produce the results I would have expected. One man's opinion.

Would most NCAA teams have loved to have had BU's 2000's decade? Sure. I think BU could have done better though.

That's fair enough. I expected more during some of those regional finals also. I just don't think that those games warrant replacing Parker.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 Part III - Is That So Much To Ask?

I think his ego is hellbent on outlasting York and trying to retire with the most wins. Thats how I see it anyways.

Of course you see it that way. You have some of the most maroon-and-gold tinted glasses around. Parker has told us he will stop coaching when he no longer enjoys it. Having gotten as close to him as I have over the last two years, I can assure you that time has not yet come. He clearly still loves what he does, and that's been evident in many conversations we've had with him.

Didn't Parker say that he was advised by doctors to stick with hockey if it would keep him active rather than retiring and wasting away? I thought I read that somewhere.

We talked to him about this before the season and I don't remember all the specifics of the conversation. But I don't think it was so much that continuing to coach was better than retiring as it was the doctor told him the operation shouldn't prevent him from doing something he enjoys. The doctor also told him to avoid as much stress as possible, though. I think Parker has been slightly more subdued this year, but not much. I'd find it hard to believe he's avoided stress.

Will some leader in the student section please stand up at some point in the 3rd period and revive the "Hey Everybody! Give me a T...." cheer?

I can tell you that in my experience when I was still a student, these types of cheers were not terribly well received.

I'm sorry, what's the T one? Terriers? The only one I ever heard catch on was the S-E-X, score, score, score, and even that was only among a group of 20 or so.

I'm showing my age...

Way way back in the early 90s.. Amonte, McEachern, Tkachuck etc era... there was always some student leader in section 8 (Ogre, Roachman, don't remember who else), who would stand up between whistles at some point in the third period and yell at the top of his lungs.... "Hey Everybody!"... the crowd responds "what?"

He yells.... "Give me a T"... and would make the body cheering sign for the letter T.

Secitons 7, 8, 9... most of the arena really, would respond "TEEEEEEEEEEE"

Then he'd yell... "Give me an E" ... and would make the body cheering sign for the letter E.

everyone responds... "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"

"Give me an R"....

(You get the idea)...

At the end, he yells.... "Whats that spell"....

The whole arena responds "TERRIERS, TERRIERS, TERRIERS"....then GO BU, GO BU, GO BU....

I'm not sure how or when that one died off... but it certinally lasted for a good number of years and was really a cheer that more than the student section responded to...

I think that died off with the new arena. I remember that guy pretty clearly. He was definitely not a student, but an alumni at that point.

i know that in 108 we've done it with Maine (M-A-I-N-E What do they do? Suck! etc.) and we've done a slightly cruder one than the S-E-X one as well.

Talk to Quiddlet, though, he'd know better than me

Didn't an alumn/non-student try that cheer out at Agganis for one game a few years back? I feel like it was either at a Quarterfinal game where the students were away on break, or at a game that the students were pretty flat. I may be making this up though

Maybe? I'm not sure... I dont remember it, but i may not have been there, or could have been waiting in the ice cream line.

If so, it probablly was an alum that rememberd it from the Walter Brown Arena days... for a number of years it was done at just about every game.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 Part III - Is That So Much To Ask?

- I'm pretty much with Brian, Jofa (the more reserved one we've seen on this thread :D), JD and Nick on this one. Too much spin about almost this and almost that. BC "almost" won it all in 1998, BU "almost" won it all in 1991, Maine "almost" won it all in 2002 (?). Over the course of 14 years, the excuses wear out. I used to defend Parker to the end, when we were only 4 or 5 years into this stretch, but the sample size has grown too large

- Brian hit it on the head - the team has underachieved. To put it another way:
1990-1998: Good Players, Good Results
1999-2003 (?): Bad players, Bad Results (I blame the Bad Arena)
2004-Present: Good players, Bad results

I'm oversimplifying (in most years, the results weren't truly "BAD", but not as good as they should have been), but you get the picture.

And to everyone bringing up excuses about defections - all programs have had to deal with this side-effect of success for the pat 20+ years. In 1991, BU lost (in addition to a phenomenal senior class), the following players with eligibility: McEachern, Amonte, Tkachuk, Lachance, and Ahola. Two NHL stars, two solid NHL contributors, and one NHL cup of coffee. They were replaced that fall by names like Herlofsky, McKersie, Brennan, Linna, Aucoin, Prendergast and Pomichter. That team won the Beanpot and made the NCAA's, the one year out of 8 that we didn't make the FF.

So what would I like to see? If any of the following were options - Quinn, Sullivan, Hynes - I'd like to see Parker announce that next season will be his last, he will be replaced by ______, and that coach is coming in as an assistant for one season. I think the first two names would result in very little drop-off on the recruiting front, and Hynes is well known in many circles. I also have no concern about a drop-off in results, because these guys played under Parker, no what BU hockey is about, and have significant coaching experience.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 Part III - Is That So Much To Ask?

Do you think York cares about having more wins than Parker?
Am I right in thinking that York has something like 75 more losses that Parker? (How could that be given that York has been coaching just one more year?) And is Dick Umile ahead of them both in win percentage?
