Re: Boston University: 2010-11 part I - "so...you're saying i get a calendar??"

Nice post. This is a key stretch. I doubt it will be as simple as splits all around.

My gut tells me they lose to Maine, split with the Mack, Take 3 or 4 from UNH and take 1 or none from BC. (Brown, duh.) That would leave them at 9-3-3. (3 points from UNH, 1 from BC.) I'll take it.

But enough with this rational, thoughtful approach. If they lose to Maine Saturday, I will declare that the season is over, they suck, and wonder where the glory days have gone. :)

BU Hockey: Keep Surprising Us

Having seen UNH twice already this season (v. Michigan at the Whitt and v. Cornell at Lynah), I'd worry about underestimating this team. While I'm not 100% sold on the goalie, I think UNH has real potential to do well throughout the season and into the post-season (barring injury, of course). I haven't seen this year's BU team yet, but if they sit back and skate lackadaisically with a lead, I think UNH will make them pay. That said, I'm looking forward to those games. :)

Also - Joe, I believe the board is trying to overload the site to figure out why it keeps failing on Fri/Sat. They have signed in most of the posters (and IPs) to have signed in here to see what the capacity is. Currently there are nearly 8000 people browsing USCHO. While I'd like to believe that college hockey is that popular during dinner on an election night, I'm thinking this is a board thing, not an actual # of people.

Firstly, I do not (repeat DO NOT) recommend doing the drive there and back in 1 day (it's about 6.5 hours each way from Manchester). It was a fun time (a great rink), but I was a little disappointed with the student section: EXCELLENT showing (several full Walter-Brown-sized sections), but not too much in the way of creativity. Every student fan knows the cheers though. Loved that there is NO canned music, the band plays at every stoppage. Free indoor parking near the rink was nice. Also, no one should ever tease UNH about the number of banners as Lynah's entire ceiling is littered with them (as well as a Dryden jersey, of course). We sat on one end (across from the Cornell band) and weren't able to see the far end of the ice on our side, so I'd recommend seats that are higher up (we were about 5-7 rows up) and more toward center ice, if you can get them. Definitely worth the drive (particularly since I was rooting for the winning team), but spread it over 2 days and take some time to enjoy the campus (they actually have castles) as well as ... something else (whatever else) along the way.

Not sure how much it matters, but the website Hockey Primetime just gave BU the number one spot in its NCAA power rankings. Miami's third and BC got a bit of a stick in the ribs. Check it out.

Poles only matter in October, November, December, April, and all summer months. Polls matter in September, February, and March. The Swedes matter in January.

I hope everyone has this straight now.

Well, ya know, Cornell has actually won some stuff that can't be counted on just one hand so of course they have a ceiling littered with banners. UNH... not so much.

I say tease away.

I agree- 4 wins would have me thinking this team is for real. One win apiece against MC, UNH and BC and a win over Brown. Picking up a tie or two or picking up another win along the way to avoid 4 losses would be a bonus. Basically, anything .500 or better during this stretch is good. They're probably still a top 10 team if that happens.

Well, the team has shed some of its 'always start slow' pattern in 2 of the last 3 years but those years when they did start off slowly helped us realize how much hockey gets played after Xmass, how unbalanced the schedule can be and how being hot late is way better than being hot early. So, I would have gladly taken 9-10 wins by that point of the season if you asked me in Sept. and won't take a 'back down to earth' stretch as a bad omen...with a young team a little adversity is a good prep for what is surely to come.

What I like (from having seen less than the rest of you guys) is consistency in goal and across the lines and a return of some fire/accountability from the players...the rest I put in Jack's hands and figure no matter how the next 8 go, this team looks like they can contend for a top spot in HE which will put them in the top 16 at year end.

Agreed. This team seems like they care out on the ice, they're not content with what's happened in the past for them. Of course, there's only a few remaining who have anything to be content with that they've done at BU. But there's definitely a fire in their guts while they're on the ice, and a willingness (sometimes too much of it) to work together. They're young though and have some kinks to work out, but the problems are not in the lack of caring category where they were last year. Probably has something to do with the example set by the two guys with the C's, both two of the hardest workers and leave it all on the ice guys on the team.

My prediction of a 3 point weekend against UNH wasn't so much that I'm underestimating them, just that we always seem to play well against them. Granted, I know they had that winning streak at Agganis. So let's put the tie at HAA and the win at BU-Owned Lake Whitt. :)

BU Hockey: It's fun out on this limb

Belongs on the alumni thread, but Shattenkirk recalled to Colorado. Could see action against Vancouver tomorrow.

They're with Michael Vick. I would hope he's doing a good job looking after them...
